Hey guys,

I've recently started producing electronic music, Dubstep in particular. I've been DJ'ing for 10 years now but for some reason never bothered to dabble in production. Laziness perhaps, but it's been a pipe dream of mine for a long time so I'm super glad I started.

Anyway, I've almost finished my first tune. I'll post link down below. I'm pretty stoked! I'm still a complete noob so I've no idea how compression works for basslines etc and there aren't many effects yet but I figure I'll keep polishing the track as I progress and learn new techniques.

The reason I'm posting it here is because I want the tune to be Alien related; I absolutely love the sound the Neomorph makes, and I tried to emulate it a little, not too much but overall the tune is quite dark so it fits with the theme, in my opinion. When Covenant is out on Blu-Ray I'm going to record the Neomorph screeches/clicks and add it to the track, along with a vocal, maybe Walter yelling "There's another one!" during the Neomorph attacks in the field. I think that'd sound pretty cool.

I'll need to find out how sampling/copyright works first though.

Last but not least, it needs a name. 'Neomorph' sounds lazy, but I definitely want it to be Alien related. There are already tunes called LV-426 and LV-223 so those ideas are out ;)

I was thinking Origae-6 or A0-3959X.91, but thought I'd leave it open to you guys.. Any suggestions?

Anyway, I hope you enjoy it. Feedback is always welcome! :)

Edit: Soundcloud link added.

First up: 10 year musician here. I recently launched my label with an Alien compilation (which you can buy on tape for only $7):

Second off: I wouldn't call your track dubstep (and I definitely wouldn't try to make it; that genre has been all but dead for at least 4-5 years since it reached saturation point). IMO it kind of drags out a bit; take the most interesting elements and contract it. IMO it's difficult to keep interest in a slower, 5+ minute track without vocals or a strong lead melody.
Never give a shit what anyone else has named their tracks. There are very few original names left, especially when you are working in "genre" music where you are inspired by pop media. There are only so many distinct and cool names/locations/objects in the Alien franchise, so do what you want.

As far as sampling copyrights go: Unless you officially license the sounds from the films (which is very, very expensive and difficult; you first need to actually get a foot in the door as far as SPEAKING to them), you COULD BE sued for using their intellectual property.
Keyword...COULD. In 10 years though, I have sampled highly from many films, video games and other sources and never heard a word. The likelihood that your track will become huge enough to attract legal attention is slim to none, and if it does become large enough, chances are good you suddenly have enough money to deal with the problem anyway. Shoot first; ask questions later.

Lastly: get a Soundcloud, nobody wants to download your shady Mediafire MP3 just to hear your track.

Excellent advice. Thanks! Yeah looking into a soundcloud now. It's definitely Dubstep though, albeit a more minimal style, similar to what is still produced in the UK by people like J:Kenzo, SP:MC, LX One etc (It originated in the UK), it's essentially just bass and percussion unlike the style that was adopted by the US *cough* Skrillex where instead of bass it was just growly midrange.. I agree it's been dead in the US but for good reason IMO, it doesn't belong in the mainstream at festivals like EDC it belongs in small dark dungeons filled with subs. Trust me, Dubstep is still very much alive in Europe.

First minute or so and last minute or so are a bit slower as it's designed to be mixed into or out of another tune, I completely understand how someone would not realise this. So, in a mix for example you'd really only hear the peak of the track, the intro would be layered under the peak of the track before it if that makes sense.

But I do appreciate the feedback. DEFINITELY needs more layers and a vocal, this is essentially just a draft that I'll keep working on. Thanks again.
