My tweeks on Alien Covenant

No spoilers but some things that I though that should have made the film a little better.

This is how my version of Covenant would have played.

*****************************

Film opens with the Engineer ship with Shaw and David heading to the planet. We see Shaw still sleeping in cryostasis as the ship prepares to dock on the Engineer home world.

A cold David is showing wreaking havoc on the planet. After the attack, it cuts back to David but then it fades to Walter on the Covenant.

He is the only one up with James Franco as Franco is the last to get into his sleep chamber. Franco is basically giving a log report (similar to Star Trek or what Charleston Heston did in Planet of the Apes and before he goes to sleep, Walter reassures him that he has the crew and the ship under control.

Then the ship with the solar flare problems happen and the fate of what happens to certain members is shown. After it all ends, we establish the couples by having them having dialogue in their cabins. There will be cabins for the couple crew members when they do not have to be in suspended animation.

Tennessee and his wife will be the ones to fix the solar panels. Tennessee almost gets into a mishap in which he wife helps him out. This establish a connection between their relationship, their characters and should generate more emotion when the doodoo hits the fan. The transmission will received.

Get rid of the religious hoopla from the second in command. Just show him not ready and slightly incompetent due to his new role and how the crew becomes disengaged from him. I thought Crup's character was decent.

I would have had the crew land on the planet with environment suits on and they use a test animal (perhaps a rabbit) they had on the ship (as part of their colonization mission) with them to show the planet is breathable. A little more common sense.

Alien small pods and perhaps the rabbit gets impregnated but I will have the life-cycle last a little longer. One of the astronauts gets the airborne "virus" because he is left to secure an area and he removes his helmet to smoke a cigarette and that is how it enters its nostrils.

I will keep away from the Dr. Moreau stuff but David does find an Engineer lab on the planet that was dealing with the xenomorph experiments and he takes it from there.  Again, leaving the theory that the Engineers created the xenomorphs originally.

I would have dealt with the facehugger attacks a little more different in regards to time; aligning with the true life-cycle. I would have wanted it to show differently when the security officer gets back on the ship, in a manner that is a little more shocking.  For example, after he is patched up and left alone.  He goes into convulsions while sleeping and the baby xenomorph pops out.

And to surprise the audience, stop with the female heroine at the end. It is already played out and they should have let Tennessee save the day and that will truly show Danny McBride play a non-type cast character in this role. And then having him getting wasted by you know who. Something that Ridley originally pitched about Ripley's death in Alien.

I had more ideas but I think these little tweeks would have made a difference. Also, using a DP like Darius Khondji again who knows how to film spooky and dread.

Well you can always convince a studio to shell out 200 million dollars or so and write an original script instead of altering something that is already created:) Good luck.

It's always easy to change or copy someone elses work than actually create something yourself.

@splatterpunk - 'It's always easy to change or copy someone elses work than actually create something yourself.'

The Engineers may soon be saying the same to David?  LOL!

@colonialsoldier        Wow, that makes Covenant so much better, thanks. After waking up with anxiety after about 3 hours of sleep, luckily I fell back asleep again eventually, this movie just bothers the shit out of me. I wish so much was different and these changes would have made the movie better for sure.

I am still hoping David gets brought down a notch in the next film!  HAHA!

Yeah, he was a bastard in covenant. Massive god complex for sure. I mean at this point he wants to end humanity basically. That's what I got out of covenant.

The way I interpreted the film was that the pods and black goo spores were a bi product of the Engineers homeworld. Hence the creature that looks like a Neomorph in the mural in Prometheus

@splatterpunk.  Exactly.  Alien Covenant=Alien+Aliens+Prometheus lol

@Dr Conners.  Thanks.  With the cost of a movie ticket today and concessions; you want to experience a great product.  Sadly, it was a botched job.

I just saw this on BoxOfficeMojo.  Let's see this weekend's box office.  From there, we will know if it will make a profit.  If it is at only 150 million worldwide after this weekend; it will be cutting it close.

'Alien: Covenant' and 'Guardians of the Galaxy 2' Duke it Out for Weekend Box Office #1

FRIDAY AM UPDATE: Alien: Covenant delivered $4.2 million from Thursday night previews, which began at 7PM at ~3,000 locations. This compares favorably to Mad Max: Fury Road, which brought in $3.7 million on Thursday night before opening with $45.4 million. In fact, this is a better preview result than 2012's Prometheus, which brought in $3.6 million ahead of its $51 million opening weekend.

Update---I just saw on BOM, that Alien Covenant cost 97 million less advertising.  So I think I can predict at this time, that it will make a profit.

@colonialsoldier      You're welcome and yeah you're exactly right. I feel like I got bitch slapped by Ridley Scott.

@Dr. Connors - Have you ever seen the movie Pandorum?  Produced by AVP director Paul Anderson.  I thought the film was better and had a better look than Covenant.

And that chestburster scene was very lame.  Who came up with that idea? lol

Dr. Curt Connors

MemberChestbursterMay-19-2017 10:10 AM

@colonialsoldier   I do like Pandorum and they had a way smaller budget than this I am sure, good call. Did you see Life? I didn't end up seeing it, will watch it when it comes out on Blu Ray for sure. And yes that chestburster scene was awful, haha. Who thought this script was good?

I need to watch Aliens like 426 times to get this bad taste out of my mouth.

colonialsoldier

MemberFacehuggerMay-19-2017 11:25 AM

Pandorum, the Omen lol.  I saw Life and it starts off great but always slides at the end but I think it is a better movie that Covenant.  Life flopped because it only made 75 million worldwide and needed 120 to break even.

The Aliens needed to attack David as well; and he could beat them because of his strength.  When I read the Alan Dean Foster book version of Alien; Ash asked to be put back together since he claimed to have the strength to destroy the Alien.  The Alien when it burst; just has to run and scatter.  None of that adoring crap lol.

Dr. Curt Connors

MemberChestbursterMay-19-2017 11:58 AM

Yeah I will have to watch Life and yeah I agree.

I thought this thread deserved a bump, since we're now at a point where there are likely many more prepared to contribute.
