Scrappedathon Reviews: Godzilla vs. Ghost Godzilla

It's Bigger! It's Better! Ladies and Gentlemen welcome back to SCRAPPEDATHON! The series where I take a look at the Godzilla movies that were never made. Today's movie is special because it is my personal favorite scrapped film, and that film is "Godzilla vs. Ghost Godzilla".

DEVELOPMENT

The year is 1994, Tristar has bought the rights to make an American Godzilla movie (even though it wasn't Godzilla at all). And in order for Tristar to do so Toho decided to that it was time to end the Heisei Godzilla series. There where several idea's and a few scripts that where created during that time, and one of them was the movie called "Godzilla. vs Ghost Godzilla. The film was going to be released on December 22, 1994 and we would have seen the Heisei Godzilla fighting the ghost of the 1954 Godzilla. However Screenwriter Kazuki Omori thought that the idea of three Godzilla movies were he fought monsters that resembled him (MechaGodzilla 2 and SpaceGodzilla) was simply "to much". The script was ultimately canned and was replaced by "Godzilla vs. Destoroyah".

Plot

Not much is known of the film's plot, outside of a couple idea's that would have been presented in the movie. For starters the ghost of the original Godzilla was going to posses the body of Godzilla JR and force's him to grow into a fully grown Godzilla that resembled the original Gojira's design. The movie was also going to incorporate the monster Anguirus, but it is unknown what his role would have been in the film.

New Kaiju

Ghost Godzilla- This is one of my favorite scrapped monsters, because it combines two of my favorite things, Godzilla and the Paranormal. Ghost Godzilla also has a very interesting design, it resembles a mixture of the Heisei Godzilla and the 1954 Godzilla. However it's skin is cracked and splitting apart, and has blank white eyes (just like the GMK Godzilla).

Final thoughts

I think this could have been a very good movie if it was made. I find the idea of Ghost Godzilla possessing the body of Godzilla Jr to be very cool, considering that Godzilla Jr is the only other living member of Godzilla's kind it would create an interesting conflict within him, it makes you wonder how Godzilla is going to stop his son. I do wonder what role Anguirus would have in the plot. Overall while I would have loved to seen this movie and how it would play out, I am ultimately happy with the movie that we got "Godzilla vs. Destoroyah" instead.
