Sir Ridley Scott (born 30 November 1937) is an English film director and producer. Following his commercial breakthrough with the science-fiction horror film Alien (1979), his best known works are the neo-noir dystopian science fiction film Blade Runner (1982), crime drama Thelma & Louise (1991), historical drama and Best Picture Oscar winner Gladiator (2000), war film Black Hawk Down (2001), crime thriller Hannibal (2001), biographical film American Gangster (2007), and science fiction films Prometheus (2012) and The Martian (2015).

Scott is known for his atmospheric, highly concentrated visual style.[1][2] Though his films range widely in setting and period, they frequently showcase memorable imagery of urban environments, whether 2nd century Rome (Gladiator), 12th century Jerusalem (Kingdom of Heaven), Medieval England (Robin Hood), contemporary Mogadishu (Black Hawk Down), or the future cityscapes of Blade Runner. His films are also known for their strong female characters.[3] Scott has been nominated for three Academy Awards for Directing (for Thelma & Louise, Gladiator and Black Hawk Down).[1] In 1995, both Ridley and his brother Tony received the BAFTA Award for Outstanding British Contribution To Cinema.[4] In 2003, Scott was knighted for his "services to the British film industry".[5] In 2015, he was awarded an honorary doctorate by the Royal College of Art in London.[6]

He is a genius in a way, pretty arrogant at times but this is a trait to success... and its simply not so much being a Narcissist but just have a great pride in his own work and not caring what others think.

Apart from a few Wardrobe Malfunctions (near every movie has Goofs) and sometimes a loss how to portray scale... with regards to Alien/Prometheus.... the guy is a visual master and very hands on.

I have to say his accomplishments outshine any failures to a degree...

So he has to be regarded as one of the Best at what he does, he is also pretty unique.

Pleasure. I love Sir Ridley's work.

When it comes to Sci-fi his only rival is Stanley Kubrick.

I view him as a genius, visionary, maverick, auteur, brave, bold, unique, consumate world builder!

To the OP

I notice you just copied and pasted Wikipedia's bio on Sir Ridley and have not given your opinion of him, so where do you stand?

Lone

I wouldn't humor this individual. He has been provoking people in several threads. Many of his comments are rude and don't take the discussion seriously.

Like a lot of amazing directors, Cameron included, I feel his best work was in his first couple films (namely, Alien & Blade Runner).  Although Thelma & Louise I thought was good and smart, but not as great as A or BR. There were some god-awful scenes in Prometheus that were cringeworthy (Vickers & Janek flirtation, that comical part where the hammerpede goes into Milburns mouth).  I still wonder if a 1st or 2nd unit director directed those scenes.  The jury's still out on AC - I hope it's good - but I wasn't too keen on the trailer, so we'll see.

oh yes i do queen! don't be mean! teehee!
and as for YOU Lone..... YOU ARE CORRECT! the story is...this thread wasnt really my idea..... a couple of blokes from another thread told me theyd be thrilled if yours truly would create a thread about scott! methinks they were worried that without a place of its own...the topic would end up polluting other threads since its so easy for any conversation on covenant to go swirling back into debates on scotts ethics and skill as an artist! maybe its best if i credit the chaps who inspired this thread in the description....YOU sir can read the backstory to this thread HERE! ...it should start with a post i made marked Jan-26-2017 11:49 PM
about the wiki....i didnt really have anything else to add for the description since the topic title summed it in kind.....so i jammed in the whole shabang-a-bang from the wiki for anyone who wanted to peekaboo a summary with some linkos before commenting!
on my opinion of scott himself?....for me i am a big scott fan. not just because he makes great movies.....but also because hes good with juggling something as wacky as a prequel quadrilogy....the old bloke seems adaptable which is something others all too often are in short supply of these days. plus unlike yall americans....he very much gets the importance of breaking for tea and crumpets. my kind of chap i say!

I do remember Cameron commenting on the tea and biscuit breaks being his biggest gripe, even more so than the apc nearly killing a cameraman

ali81

MemberNeomorphJan-27-2017 12:01 PM

I know exactly what you are speaking of. It was discussed in a documentary for Aliens included with one of the DVD releases.

Cameron was locked in a conflict with the British crew of Pinewood when shooting in England. There was an epic ending to it where on the final day, Cameron basically let the crew know exactly how he felt (with no sugar coating I should note). His words were as follows:

“This has been a long and difficult shoot, fraught by many problems,” he said. “But the one thing that kept me going, through it all, was the certain knowledge that one day I would drive out the gate of Pinewood and never come back, and that you sorry bastards would still be here.”

A fairly brutal farewell from Cameron. A summary of the ordeal is available at various sites online if you Google "James Cameron Pinewood"

he mentioned in the dvd documentary how on the first day theyd been shooting for about an hour and then everyone just downed tools n left hahaha then theres a wee woman with the tea trolley. don't think they knew much about him of his work till he gave them a viewing of terminator. the cameraman was dam lucky as it was Cameron who saved his life in the apc scene

I'm not sure I understand the definition of "is he your poison/pleasure", but I feel like his attention to detail is unmatched.
