A harrowing escape - Alien: Covenant plot update raises minor questions

As per the new synopsis for the upcoming Alien: Covenant - The Art of the Film book by Titan Books, it is revealed that the crew of the USCSS Covenant uncover a threat beyond their imagination and from there attempt a harrowing escape.

The "unimaginable threat" likely references the Alien spore, which infects various members of the crew. But, the last line of the new synopsis has me wondering - attempting a harrowing escape. Why a harrowing escape?

Could the Covenant crew awaken yet another sleeping Engineer who's planning on shipping the parasitic Alien life form to Earth like the one we saw in Prometheus? Perhaps, or perhaps David is the one who plans on taking his creations back to Earth? If the act of escaping was to merely benefit those surviving crew members, would they not use the term "daring escape" instead?

For some reason, this wording insinuates that the (I suspect Daniels) member(s) who manage to avoid death-by-Alien in Covenant discover a horrible truth, like the one Shaw and David discovered in Prometheus and are then forced to once again save Humanity from a terrible disaster. I feel as though the Covenant incident will not be contained to Paradise, but will have lasting and profound effects on the fate of Humanity.

What do you think?

Chris,

There is a keyword in the synopsis that is being overlooked.

They must "attempt" a harrowing escape. (paraphrased)

That is, they must try to make a harrowing escape, doesn't anywhere say they succeeded at escaping.  Now, wouldn't that be a twist in the plot?

What if they don’t know that there are these spores when they get there so they all get infected? If this will happen and no one of them knows how to get it out then how will anyone be able to survive? Getting an alien out is one thing but the spores are smaller so that would eventually be more difficult because I doubt that they are prepared for that and have some medicine (compare it to antibiotics) in order to cure themselves. Another thing is that we don’t know how fast the spores grow inside the body so maybe they are not prepared for that. These are just some random thoughts, I hope that they make sense. Hopefully I haven’t misunderstood the topic.

Wrote this in the other thread but it applies to this Synopsis.

=========

Nice addition to the Synopsis but i guess it was logical they would not want to be sticking around once Hell breaks loose.

So this Synopsis addition seems to maybe add to the Explosion scene we saw?  This is just a assumption that maybe some one tries to prevent their means of escape.

i.e Sabotages the ship?

================

Or once the few survivors feel they have got past the ordeal something else reveals itself...

Could this be David's Agenda when they finally find out he was behind the Ordeal all along.... or do they find the Juggernaught to escape on... and find Shaw?

Or awaken a Engineer?

Who knows... wont be long now though ;)

The word 'harrowing' means acutely distressing.  So it definitely fits this situation, in that I'm sure escaping from any killer alien situation would be very distressing.  It doesn't necessarily need to have apocalyptic implications.  Although I think it will.

Because... It all does seem to be stemming from one problem, the black goo outbreak.  And I think  it will be leading to Earth in the end.  So I definitely think this mission will have  Earth-destroying implications.

DW,

Remember this is a Prequel Sequel and is supposed to lead up to the derelict on LV-426 and Alien.  We must have stopped the spread somewhere, in the next movie or 2.  So the earth destroying implications would have to be in Blomkamps Alien 5.

Indeed i think we need to look at this movie giving us say 90-120 Minutes more insight into the Xenomorph and Engineers but then remember we are getting another TWO movies before we get the Lv-426 Direct Answers.

Thats a potential 4.5-6 Hours with 3-5 leading up to that point and so we have to question where does all this fit, if we are going to see the Start of the Xenomorph Evolution in this movie then would they need to spread that over 2 more movies.

So it would not surprise me if the next movie would touch upon events from the Past... and so at the time of when the Engineers had the Outbreak 2000 years ago and more insight into what ever befell their civilization.

At the moment i am still edging towards the Derelict being there for thousands of years and more directly connected to the events that had happened to those Dead Engineers on LV-223 rather than a event that happened as a Result of Prometheus Mission and what ever Shenanigans David 8 gets up to afterwards.

I think the "Harrowing" would stand out more if the premise was most of the crew are expecting a Perfect Habitat to start to Colonize and are not aware of the Danger that awaits..

But once they come across the Danger etc... the Harrowing Element could be that they find its been a Trap Laid by David 8 who decived them or even more that some of the Crew (Company insider) are also in on the ACT.

So in reality these Poor Helpless Couples hoping to set up and start a New Life on a World that is a Beautiful Paradise like the Garden of Eden... have instead been set up from the Start to meet their Doom at the Agenda of David and maybe the Company.

So there is a hidden Agenda Element.... much like with the Nostromo Mission.

Rick,

Earth-destroying implications...  Meaning that something will happen on this mission that makes it apparent to the crew that the Earth/human race will be destroyed.  Obv we know they prevent it, because like you said it's a prequel.

Prometheus had Earth-destroying implications as well.  But the crew prevented it by crashing into the Engineer ship.  (Maybe I didn't use 'implications' the right way, but I thought it was correct.  Maybe ramifications is more appropriate?  Or another word?)

But yeah my comment about it leading to Earth in the end was referring to the conclusion of the Alien series, aka Alien 5 like you said.  Sorry for the confusion.

BigDave,

I totally agree that we will see the past event of what happened to the Engineers in this movie.  I will be very surprised if we don't.

I was just implying that the Covenant crew might have to prevent another disaster as the Prometheus crew did.  Not necessarily a fully evolved Xeno scenario.  Like you said, that is probably going to have to stretch across the next 2 movies.  I was thinking maybe another surviving Engineer.  If there are surviving Engineers, I would think they would still want to carry out their plan to destroy the Earth/human race.  Or possibly an earlier form of Xeno, or even a Proto-Xeno, making it onto a craft headed toward Earth.  I could be totally wrong though, but hey that's half the fun of theorizing :)

As to what led to LV-426 and the Derelict, it's very possible that it stemmed directly from the events of what killed the Engineers on LV-223.  So if Ridley wants to wrap up this story in a nice neat package, that means we will most likely see exactly what happened on LV-223 in one of the movies after Covenant.  Is that safe to assume?

I don't really lean one way or the other on this topic.  I could easily see the events of LV-426 and the Derelict stemming directly from the Engineer disaster on LV-223.  But at the same time, because we know we're getting 2 more movies after Covenant, there are so many possibilities!  Either way it's fun to think about and I appreciate how you weigh in on pretty much every topic.  It's nice talking about this stuff with people who are passionate about it.

DW,

Actually I wasn't thinking about it the way you were.  When you elaborated a bit on what you meant it totally made sense.  I'm sure there will be another earthbound xeno-catastrophe as is the norm for the plot methodology of the series.  But then again, David could be content experimenting on what he has in Paradise.

"I was just implying that the Covenant crew might have to prevent another disaster as the Prometheus crew did"

Totally Plausible

And as you said in various ways,  depend on if we see Engineers in the next movie as far as timeline of 2104 to 2122 and if so how do they get involved and react to Mankind coming to Paradise.

It could be a attempt from David, or some Corporate Duchebag taking a specimen be that organism or the Black Goo back to Earth.

Or even as above but instead of taking something, they send a signal/transmission that potential would lead a Mission to either go to Paradise or LV-223

Regardless i do feel the events of the next movie would project a THREAT that potentially wont be isolated to just Paradise, as much as we see the Derelict becomes something that is stumbled upon again by Humanity.
