What would you think about the Derelict essencially beying a sort of emergency life boat...

What would you think if it was piloted by another form of "Engineer" rescuing its own?, or was it a kidnapping? a mutiny? or was it military personnel? like soldiers on D-day on their way to earth because the black goo went out of control and they needed to destroy earth manually... was it scores and scores of "engineer looking" soldiers on a mission, or escape?, other forms of life due to another disaster that occured with the mysterious black goo outbreak? An Ark?..... Was the pilot even an engineer?

As discussed in many posts... I too recognize the immense size of this particular derelict ship..the original "Space Jockey" the room where Kane was lured down into the long egg beds.  Were these once lifeforms all compacted in cargo holders? and what kind of life forms?, where they once engineers?,  or was it the "beaked" people we saw in the murals?

Did the pilot have good intensions of rescue escape? or like our known speculations that this was initially deadly cargo eggs for earthling extermination?

This obviously was a different ship, and the pilot was a tad bigger.

I think about the egg morphing...and how organically they are all leathery, wanting us to figure this out.....

are these just rows and rows of victims?

The "source" of the pilot's death makes me wonder, what kind of (single) xenomorph could have done all this damage? were the eggs there before?, or after the death of the pilot?  and where did the pilot's chestburster go? (in the ridley scott timeline). This question I think will only be trully answered in the 3rd or 4th installment of Prometheus's future sequels leading into our mother of this storyline........Alien.

I love the mystery myself even tho i write these scenarios,.. not having the answers can be much more fun than getting all of the answers :D

My interest in the unresolved elements of the mythos is to enjoy, through speculation, the creative process that Ridley (and others) go through to produce an interesting thought provoking story that can then be filmed and deliver the numbers.

I accept Ridley's view that they were having "trouble with the script" and so he went with the Martian but towards the end of last summer his concerns had been resolved and in judging the Derelict its cargo and its pilot I would dismiss all of the conjecture of the original films potential plots and any speculations or observations for the current movie that predate September last year and apply those answers he has subsequently given to my speculations.

Note

Thats not to say earlier scripts will not inform Covenant, but I prefer to look at specific narrative speculations, since the narrative was finalised last autumn.

In February 2016 Sir Ridley gave an extended interview about his career which is available on U Tube and this is what he had to say.

"The craft is a battle wagon carrying bacteriological biomechanoid monsters which could be used to clean out …."

This of course is another version of the view of the purpose of the Juggernauts mission we meet in Prometheus where the cargo is the Mutagen.

As an aside why was the Prometheus Juggernaut not carrying Eggs, in another interview from the autumn of last year he describes us as meeting the forerunner of the Zenomorph the Deacon, that tells us a great deal of his thinking of the relationship between the achievements on LV223 and the crashed Juggernaut on LV426.

So the pilot the Space Jockey is on a mission. "The Engineers are they Gods not really" so there is another layer who is God that gives the Engineers fall its relativism, its connection with the Poem Paradise Lost - GOD or more broadly the heirarchy.

So why did this particular Jockey have an ALIEN inside him, there are quotes attributed to Ridley from his press conference in Sydney, celebrating the new funding arrangements, that the "films' would provide the answer, but the Sydney Herald which is the source of all the articles does not say that.

So will we receive a definitive answer, will we see a Juggernaut lift off from somewhere with an unknowing infected Space Jockey or will we receive an explanation of Paradise Lost which provides us with an entirely logical answer.

It could be a redemptive Engineer/transformed Shaw/Big Idea David.

There is another possibility perhaps the Jockeys with eggs on board in fulfilment of their "Lost" perverted twist on sacrifice "knowingly" leave for their target and when they land their first act is sacrifice leaving the new crew member as a shepherd/sheep dog for its deadly cargo, and the Eggs to their deadly task, in this instance, as can happen, something went wrong and the creature emerged before the plan, hence the emergency set down and setting off of the beacon. That of course suggests the forerunner and the Zenomorph itself are in the past.

@Ati

"The space jockey is a transformed human, namely Elizabeth Shaw. After an escape she tries to destroy the cargo or the whole ship, or tries to save Earth again, etc.-etc. and lands on LV-426, but she is infected and dies. And the Nostromo arrives…"

There are two matters needed at the end of Covenant to move to another movie :-

1) Survivors.

2) A purpose.

Elizabeth came for her answers about the Engineers. She received them in spades. For her to survive the movie and go on another god finding mission sounds repetitive and stuck. For her to be morphed or busted feels to routine and there are other candidates, she for me is to special to the narrative. For her to discover the truth of Paradise and come into the movie in the closing pages having been tricked/beguile (implied by Ridley in a Martian interview last autumn) and left only technically alive by David early on and possibly used in supporting the life cycle that would feel fitting. Leave with the Juggernaut and its deadly cargo knowing she has been infected and setting it down on a barren moon. This leaves Daniels and the "connection to Ripley" to fry other fish in the next movie where the next layer is explored.

Well as BD said, I think it was, originally the egg room was a separate structure from the derelict ship.  But due to time and money restraints it was changed to a cargo hold.  Now obviously the scales are off, once Kane drops through the entrance. So I believe the original thought was a pyramid like structure, very similar to the bunkers in Prometheus.

But as shown in the final cut, we have a crashed ship, with a cargo hold of eggs.  So I'm going with a transport or cargo ship here.

As to the pilot's intentions, maybe it was a failed earth mission, or, as some have speculated, maybe he was a renegade, who hi-jacked the load to prevent it from getting to earth.  That would explain the outbreak on LV223 as deliberate sabotage.

As to who is the space jockey.  Yeah, it's fun to speculate whether it could be David or even Shaw.  I was thinking about David after initially reading up on this forum; it seemed to be a perfect fit, especially since he is off to the engineer home planet with a cargo load of black goo.  But many think that's way too trite.

And the eggs.  Yeah be nice to know whether these are all victims combined with other ingredients.  Engineers?  Humans?  Other?

And how did the SJ get chest-bursted?  Yeah that's a good one.

@Dis

The point that the Eggs were originally conceived too be in a silo much like the pyramid in Prometheus and that in the end they are a deadly cargo inside a bomber is a perfect example of evolving creative thought sometimes generated by constrains of time and money. However the really interesting thing for me is that when Ridley gave the exhaustive interview I quote from Covenant was a locked script and about to start filming so thats where he is at when he goes into filming "who would create such a thing and why".

I have no idea whether the LV426 incident is in the future or in the past but when he describes the Deacon as a forerunner of the Zenomorph and there is an evolving creature on Paradise I am not going to discount it as a possibility again however it was originally conceived. As to who precisely is the Jockey.

@Ati

I have the strongest sense that we are in Babouska Doll territory with these films. So when he introduces the next "layer" which is in his mind that may well connect to the particular creature in the chair and would make sense of us gradually "backing into" the events of A L I E N. Again even what he considered at the time of Prometheus for the SJ, intended as merely inhabiting the same universe and DNA of the Zeno-morph, may have changed that is the beauty of creativity in science fiction.
