This thread will act as a debate platform for fans to discuss the differences and competition between Legendary's Godzilla and Toho's Shin-Gojira from Godzilla Resurgence.

We can separate the debate into 3 main categories:

Design and Concept

Which Godzilla has the better design? Which influential concepts did the King of the Monsters the most justice?

Abilities in a Fight

If the two Godzillas ever met and engaged in combat. Which one is more powerful? How would that battle play out?

Film Style and Quality

Keeping in mind both are completely different styles of film, this category is likely to spark some diverse opinions. Those debating this category should be familiar with both film's backgrounds and messages.

Regarding Godzilla Resurgence, many debate points will need to wait until new footage and/or the film is released. As right now, we don't know much about Shin-Goji's abilities and film style. For now however, the design is open for comparison and debate.

I gotta go with G 14. His melee ability should be enough to outmaneuver and defeat this lumbering behemoth, no offense.

Good grief.

G14 for agility in a fight. imo.. the two are as different as say the rhino is from the elephant. with G14 being the rhino.

Edwards' Godzilla might be agile and resilient, but I have a feeling that Shin-Gojira might be unstoppable. The lumbering pace and deliberate nature of Shin-Gojira tell me that he might be beyond physical reproach. This is, of course, only my opinion on the matter. :)

We still know little about the Godzilla from Godzilla Resurgence. So it's hard to call who would more than likely win. But estimating from the trailer shown, something tells me Resurgence Godzilla is in a FAR bigger league than 2014. I can't prove it nor can I deny it until the movie is officially released, however just looking at the Godzilla clearly shows that this is not the same Godzilla we're used to. It feels even more distinguished from the Godzilla from '01, and that Godzilla was powered by angry dead WWII Japanese Soldiers. Even portions of its body glowing red, which kind of made me think of Burning Godzilla, makes me think this Godzilla may be the biggest threat in terms of Godzilla. I won't even roll out the theory that Godzilla 2016 is Burning Godzilla, in a way it wouldn't surprise me. But to say "Godzilla 2014 would win due to it being more agile," means nothing at this point. We know nothing of Godzilla 2016 other than its size, and until we actually see it in action, we can only compare their sizes. Only when this movie releases can a true debate on which Godzilla would win can develop.

Since we're just going off design this time I'll have to say the Godzilla Resurgence as of now. We haven't seen much of him mind you but base opinion  I find G14's design middle of the pack, maybe lower middle; the Shingoji design I see as probably being close to, if not, a top 5 for me.

Find both designs fine, but Shingoji has more to offer in my opinion.

Hmm i would say Shin gojira cause 1. He's bigger 2. He might have a more stronger atomic breath and 3. *Size does matter*

Minster Gojira, stop referencing that 1998 piece of shit that is too disgraceful to be called a Godzilla movie.

DARTH JPSPINOREX65 - Hahaha! I am somewhat familiar with Disturbed. The Vengeful One and Asylum are two of my favorites songs they have released. :)

SR, nothing can top Down With the Sickness.  OH WAH AH AH AH.  Also, here's an epic Godzilla tribute with the song Indestructible. Disturbed is my 3rd favorite band; my 2nd favorite is Linkin Park, and my favorite is Skillet.

Shin-Gojira has significantly shorter arms.

Here's my answers to each category.

1. Shin Godzilla wins. This harkens back to Ishiro Honda's original envisioning For the king of the monsters. He's scary, imposing, and threatening.

Godzilla 2014 is fine. More life like because of the Cgi. Shin Godzilla is tokusatsu and what Godzilla truly is king of. And, at the end of the day, Godzilla will always be Japanese.

2. Holding off to see how powerful Shin Godzilla will be. 2014 has the advantage for now. Only because he took on two monsters. But, without human intervention, he would have died.

3. Film style and quality. Well, as I stated before, tokusatsu is what Godzilla is king of. I look for Shin Godzilla to be a film about how Japan will stop Godzilla. Which is what I've been waiting for.

While Godzilla 2014 has better special effects, Shin Godzilla is promising. Godzilla 2014 was successful in Japan. And I hope that Shin Godzilla crushes it at the box office.

Godzilla is a reminder, and the embodiment of The nuclear power and how hazordous radiation is. Unlike the 2014 film, I look for Shin Godzilla to be very serious. Something that relives the 54 original.

As for the two battling, I'm holding off until I see Shin Godzilla.

Minster Gojira, his arms can still help him.

shin gojira's arms... not very useful in a fight based on what I see.. his tail however could be deadly... in that ... he clearly has an advantage.. also.. if his atomic breath is like that of the original.. then he would burn any flesh easily... again.. big advantage oveer Edwards Godzilla... but a wrestler he is not.. advantage to G14. as for teeth.. well... shinG has a whole lot more and appears to have a bigger bite radius than G14... but G14 looks to have a more powerful bite... still...advantage goes to shin G for sharper and obviously way more teeth that could do a lot of damage. Wow.. this is great... one way or the other.. we the fans get the best of both worlds. Does anyone else think that this New G is a stand alone film and that there will be no sequel ? Also... do you think there will be another monster or just Shin G alone ?

Super Godzilla

MemberMothra LarvaeApr-17-2016 11:27 PM

Based on what we saw in this trailer of Shin-Gojira, you can see he doesn't even flinch from the missiles and tank rounds where as G'14 roared when he was attacked at the Golden gate bridge, possibly indicating that he had at least felt something.

Another thing was G'14 atomic breath didn't seam that potent,  where the japanese Godzilla's beam has always seamed explosive and very powerful. Yes those arms could be an issue if they ever fought.

TheGMan123

MemberTitanosaurusApr-18-2016 5:07 AM

Well, Super Godzilla, that statement isn't quite right. Godzilla only began to flinch when he was being bombarded on the gills by the navy. Also, G14's atomic breath left the female M.U.T.O. down for a few minutes before she recovered, and even then was visibly weakened. According to Awakening, G14's atomic breath has the capability of stopping regeneration, and that was the graphic novel where he tanked a multi-kilometer-sized meteor explosion a literal fly swat away from his face.

The resurgence godzilla (G16) definitely looks more like a nightmare. G14 looks positively sensible next to it. G14 looks much tougher, whereas G16 has a scarier look.  Not a fan of the tiny arms or the funky feet. G16's tail looks more deadly.

Those arms and the feet look like they would hinder the G16 in any battle with G14. Using just its arms, G14 could probably rip G16 apart. Maybe G16 would make up for it in atomic breath. Yet to be seen.

In all fairness, legendary's take of godzilla is the most realistic i have seen, although a bit on the too big size. Now i have not seen all of toho's versions of godzilla but the latest is one of the worst edits i have seen judging by the trailer. In the end it is of no difference, because we get more godzilla, regardless of the form he gets.

I would think that given Gareth Edwards' Godzilla 2014's dexterity and the fact that he can take on 2 kaiju at once would count for something.  On the other hand, Toho invented Godzilla.  He had always been a lumbering beast that always finds a way to win. Far as the "burning Godzilla" goes, I believe that Shin Gojira, in classic Godzilla style will be a tremendous walking nuclear reactor, similar to what was suggested in Destroyah.

On design and such: both are great! The difference is the intention. G14 was a "what would he look like in the real world" idea, so he is meant to look like a real animal, which he does. Shin-Goji is like a malevolent God, some terrifying other-worldly force. He looks like a nightmare.

In a battle I gotta go with Shin-Goji. I don't know what his abilities are but I just don't see G14 doing him in.

On a side-note: @ChrisPicard, what's going on with godzilla-movies.com? All the posts lead to error messages. It's like the website structure is collapsing.

The new Godzilla looks like a giant turd.  The tail is awakwerdly over size,  and the face looks Like someone just put fixed Googly eyes on it.

G 14 . People think G 16 will win because he is bigger? Not really, look at this picture comparison: https://www.scified.com/media-thumbs/godzillaresurgencelegendarygojipacificrimsizechart-185034553560753.jpg

The only real difference in size is G 16´s NECK, and his smaller arms. He is taller than G14 because he has a bigger Neck. THATS BAD. His vulnerable neck, is exposed, when he is already a giant lumbering slow Godzilla.

Not only is G14 look physically more imposing (More muscle), he is faster, and his jaw is at the height of G16 long exposed Neck. This is like a Short faced Bear fighting an obesse Giraffe.

All my money is on G14

That's rather blunt at this point. Toho has officially confirmed Shin Godzilla as the strongest.

When was THAT confirmed, Huge-Ben? I distinctly recall no news on ShinGoji being the strongest, just that he was the biggest. Plus, Darklarik has a few points on the fact that quite a bit of ShinGoji's height is in his neck, which is indeed at the level for LegendaryGoji's powerful jaws, as well as LegendaryGoji possessing greater musculature for his given BMI.

It was confirmed several days ago on Twitter, Toho's official website, and other sites.

Here is the picture I took from Twitter.

It helps when you learn another language. It translates as, "After 12 years the strongest Godzilla is realized." even my Japanese friends claim this is indeed what it says.

And, Godzilla has always had a small head with a big neck. So, that's a rather moot point as well.

And it's settled, Shin-Godzilla would destroy G'14. G'14 literally couldn't - and SHOULDN'T - touch him if spoilers are true.

All you guys are missing. A plot point. The tail. Imaging 16 vs 14. Shin gojiras tail could litteraly wipe legendarys to the ground. Then purple breath. Then ya know. Shin gojira won. Take that you says legendary s would win
