Is ALIEN 5 Nothing More Than a Cover For ALIEN Covenant?

There’s something about Neill Blomkamp’s Alien 5 pitch, which has always bothered me. It came totally out of the blue, and may well have simply been a way of testing the water and/or gauging fan reaction.

I really don’t think that he would have gone this route simply to promote himself as a potential Alien 5 director. Though I could be wrong. He has certainly done a fair bit of Alien concept art. I can’t see that being for nothing and going to waste.

Something popped into my head when I was thinking about the proposed ALIEN/Prometheus sequels. This may sound completely off the wall and I could very well be totally wrong!

So, here goes……Since Prometheus’s polarised reaction, I wonder if the delay in sequels and subsequent re-think of their storyline came about because of fan reaction to what was nothing more than a way of garnering fan reaction? A testing of the waters if you will!

We have been led to believe that Ridley has met with Blomkamp to discuss the franchise and where he plans to steer it, in order to avoid conflicting plot lines, etc. What if they were really meeting because Ridley wanted a discussion with Blomkamp, because he will not be directing ALIEN 5, as many believe, but in actual fact, one of the three Prom-Allen sequels? Or at the very least may be working on concepts and story ideas for the sequels.

I am deliberately dismissing the alleged quotes from Michael Beihn, Carrie Henn, etc, as they may have been misled or mistaken, just as many of us were! FOX, Ridley, Sigourney Weaver and Neil Blomkamp may have collaborated in order to throw us off the scent. I am proposing that ALIEN 5 might be a complete red herring.

Feel free to tell me if you think I am talking a load of black goo!

I don't know, they seem to do many re-boots and sequels (Star Wars 7 8 9, and also they have done different Spider man movies with two different actors, remember that they have also done many movies on the theme with the Hobbits and related, also various Batman movies) now so the idea of Alien 5 isn't really a surprise to me. Maybe they feel that it is easier to continue a franschise that have been profitable before instead of trying something new.

Maybe many quotes can be misleading but that doesn't mean that they lie about doing another Alien movie.

@Thoughts_Dreams I'm not saying that anyone is lying. There is nothing concrete about the validity of ALIEN 5. FOX have made no official announcement!

Blomkamp posted images on his twitter account, since then everything has been assumption and the whole thing being blown out of proportion.

I'm not saying an ALIEN 5/6/whatever will never happen, the reasons you stated above point to that being very likely!

Lone: I didn't claim that you were of that opinion either so no problems.

I honestly hope that they will do something new instead of giving us Spiderman 7, 8,9, and so on. What is up with Hollywood really?

I think it's a number of things.

Coming up with new and original ideas seems to be a problem. Plus, I think they are afraid of anything untested.

Sad as it is, unless a movie has the potential to make lots of moola, then they will not take a risk. It's a sorry state of affairs, as we are never going to see anything original or groundbreaking, just endless re-boots and multiple franchises repeating and rehashing old ideas!

This whole ALIEN 5 fiasco just proves, that cinema-goers en masse, would rather see the same old, same old, rather than a fresh spin on familiar concepts.

Ridley Scott tried to change things with PROMETHEUS, but look how far those ideals got him!

I still have hope for Covenant though, as Ridley always manages to break new ground!

Because if it is untested then there might be a risk that they won't make a profit. I am not sure why coming up with new ideas is a problem, just look around and you will se a lot that might be an inspiration, I mean how difficult can it be? Alien 5 might be a part of this so I agree.

I am not sure if the ideas for Prometheus were wrong but rather that the characters were not very good. The ideas were interesting but Fox messed it up too much.

Yes, I agree, pretty sure Fox messed with the story. However, Ridley is damned if he does and damned if he doesn't!

The end result of their short-sightedness is that new talent is going to be stifled. Whether it's writers or directors, they will have to remain within the same formulaic boundaries.

In part you may be right?

I think after Prometheus they opened a Can of Worms with the Engineers created Mankind and are thus Ancient Gods.... but are by no means Devine and Godlike...

How you do this justice? and how do you fit it within the context of a Alien Franchise while trying to side track from the Xeno and its Origins.... yes the Space Jockey could have been the BIGGER thing in the Franchise... but the way they explored the Space Jockey as being connected to Ancient Gods etc and Creation is a very BOLD PLOT and one that is very hard to Do Justice and Get Right....

They have been in a pickle..... they had a rough idea of how to Evolve this but they may have found it hard to make it all work and then tie into Alien.... Hense the many drafts....

Prometheus suffered from a few flaws not only Characters, or Editing but these Main Flaws..

1) It was to ambigious, and answered some things with more Questions and it was incoherent and too ambigious... it dangled a few carrots and then left them unanswered....  a bit like Lindeloffs Lost TV Series.

2) We never got to see how the Xeno was actually made, we never saw enough Xeno DNA or anything closely related... and the hints they are stearing away from the Xeno in future is something that futher Bugged a lot of Fans...

Blomkamp started to work on a Idea for Alien 5 and did some concept that showed, in part ...

*Company Obtaining Engineer Ship.

*Company getting its hands on Xenos, and trying to control them.

*Different kinds of Xenomorphs.

*Maybe the Egg Morph or similar theme.

*Use of Engineer Bio-Tech included Ripley in a Space Jockey related suit.

*The Return of Ripley and Hicks..

And a lot of Mainstream Media and Fans seemed to be getting more excited and had more anticipation with Blomkamps ideas and a Xeno Fan Fix....

Than a sequel to Ridley Scots Bold but Flawed, over ambigious and incoherent  semi Alien Prequel that never gave direct answers to Alien and that was indeed looking to distance itself from Alien.... and explore  Gods who created Mankind and why, in more detail...

People just was not as excited to see such a thing, they wanted a more Xeno Movie... and this is what Fox started to see...

Thus maybe why a U-Turn with Covenant.

BigDave:

I think that the idea of Prometheus was interesting (the Space Jockey) but that it got worse because of mostly bad characters and a lack of explanation of why the characters did what they did. The Space jockey is something that could be interesting and I hope that they have taken their time to flesh it out (is that how you say it?)/explain it so it will be interesting.

If you answer a question with more answers then it might be a risk that it just gets confusing. Sure you can use your imagination but I don't think that writers should depend too much on that otherwise it might just be frustrating for many people. Using your imagination in a movie isn't wrong but there is a difference between having to use the imagination and lazy writing.

As far as asking many questions: If you ask too many then you got to explain hem somehow or else it is just a mess. To me it is better to ask a few questions that you can define and give good answers to rather than to have questions all over the place or else it is just confusing. This is probably where they went wrong in the first place.

Prometheus had mostly uninspiring characters and too few alien connections that made sense. People should not have to make two years of digging into the plot to understand it because then the writers or who ever have made a mistake. Fox messed up but the writing could have been better. If it was in part about answering the Xeno it could have been better made.

Hopefully they will answer some of the Xeno (not everything) better in the next movie and also make the Engineers interesting.

Yes its a shame as indeed it takes time to study the movie over and over and you need clues from Ridleys Comments, and other Drafts and Deleted Scenes and Concept works to get more clues....

Sadly the General Puplic and even many Sci Fi fans would never consider having to dig deep for answers well a few more clues, that are not shown on Screen.

I think going the route that the Engineers are connected to creating Mankind and evolved with Lindeloffs idea... they created most life on Earth in General and are thus also what Ancient Mankind worshiped and saw as Gods...

This was a very Bold idea... but one thats hard to do justice...

If the Space Jockey was some Alien Humanoid in a Suit that was not connected to Earth as far as creators then the Plot is more simple to cover... just as Predators Plot is...    AVP kind of messed that up by showing Predators played a part in Ancient Mankind also...

BigDave:

Yeah, it is time consuming and a lot of geek work/digging is needed. I don't think that most people are that interested in doing that or think that it is worth the task. Remember that people have social lifes and so on so then what amount of time left is there to unsolve a mystery of a badly explained movie?

Hopefully they have understood that people need more things in movies that make sense or else few of them will even bother to dig deeper. They should have understood this by now. I am interested enough to try to understand the movie but a lot of people are not.

As far as the idea of the Engineers being responsible for creating mankind I think that they should have limited that to the monsters and less on human beings that is what they hinted at in Alien (1979), right? More Spaights less Lindelof in other words because (as you said) it is something that is difficult to put into a movie even though the idea is interesting. You described this in the last paragraph as far as I can see so I agree with that.

The question is how they will avoid the possible problems that came with Prometheus? Big questions require big answers so that might cause problems but that seems to be where they are stuck right now to an extent at least it is something that they must have thought about. One way is that the Engineers have nothing to do with creating mankind and that Shaw was wrong all the time so she gets answers but not the answers that she wanted to have. Perhaps this is the easiest way to take and also scientists can be wrong also (remember Shaw saying something like "we were so wrong" in the end of Prometheus). Some answers might be needed now when they have the situation that they have with the movie but they don't need to explain every little detail unles it is needed for the story.

I will watch Alien Covenant when it gets released I hope that it will be worth the wait. Hopefully it will be a lot better than Prometheus, but that is not to say that Prometheus was totally crap but it could have been much better.
