Ridley Scott hints that he may be planning as many as three Prometheus sequels

Ridley Scott himself announced at a press day for his latest, The Martian, that his next film will be a Prometheus sequel that starts up production early next year. Now, in a new interview with German movie site FilmFutter. Scott says that there may be as many as three Prometheus sequels on the way.

“Yes,” Scott replied when asked if Prometheus would directly connect to Alien, “but it won’t be in the next one. It will be in the one after this one or maybe even a fourth film before we get back into the ‘Alien’ franchise… The whole point of it is to explain the Alien franchise and to explain the how and why of the creation of the Alien itself. I always thought of the Alien as kind of a piece of bacterial warfare. I always thought that that original ship, which I call the Croissant, was a battleship, holding these biomechanoid creatures that were all about destruction.”

Please note that Scott’s quotes have been translated from the original outlet’s German translation. As such, there is some chance his statements may have been a bit misconstrued.

Prometheus 2 will go before cameras in February with Michael Fassbender and Noomi Rapace set to reprise their roles.

On top of the potential for multiple Prometheus sequels, it remains to be seen how 20th Century Fox will move forward with the main Alien franchise. Alien 5 is believed to be in development with Neill Blomkamp at the helm, but it was recently suggested that development on Prometheus 2 could hinder production.

Do you think there should be multiple Prometheus sequels? How many Prometheus sequels do you think you can handle? Let us know in the comments below!

As i posted last week when Ridley talked more about Prometheus 2 and how he would adress why these Engineers had this Evil Biological Warefare... or they will start to explain this in the next movie, which to me hinted at the very least 3 movies.... and i futher went to say the Scope for the Series with the things he was going on about and futher information i had found out... shows they could make 3-4 movies in Prometheus and futher branch off with other movies that would have nothing to link to Earth, or Weyland or even the Xenos at all...

They are hinting at a very very broad Universe... our Engineers are not Gods.... they are just pawns and tools and the follow the Agenda of some other Race or Bieng.... and it looks even that Paradise is not where its all centered around....  Paradise could just be there Base in our Galaxy and the true Top of the Hierarchy could therefore span futher than a Galaxy... we could be talking Universe and so yes as i pondered years ago... the franchise could open the door for a whole Universe of different planets and races like a Star Wars and Star Trek Universe...

Earth and Weyland and our part of the Galaxy and thus Prometheus and Alien Franchises could be just one small portion of the whole Scope behind the ideas they could be playing with!

Similar yet original visual spectacle suchvas thatof Interstellar... The idea of traversing the higher dimensions and potentially staying there for eternity... I think it would be awesome if the majority of the Engineers were now living in the higher dimension or dimensions and see how it is they got over thee in the first place... To them in relativity their entire race, if that is where they are,may have only been existing/living in the higher dimension(s) for only a few years - decades even give-or-take several generations depending upon their races reproductive cycle (if they still even have one) that implies at least are centuries... Several at most.

Respectfully, I think y'all are reading this all wrong.

They're not going to open the Alien/Prometheus franchise into a Big Tent of alien species.  Alien/Predator has always been a small tent franchise.  It's not Star Trek or Star Wars.  It's not an optimistic view of meeting aliens.  It's a pessimistic view.  That meeting actual honest-to-goodness extraterrestrial alians is going to be a damn scary business, where humans aren't at the top of the food chain anymore.  They only need a few specieis to do that.

I'm paraphrasing a great article I read about this somewhere, but the basic gist of the Alien/Predator/Engineer universe is that Aliens are the animalistic Beast, Predators are above us in the Food Chain, and Engineers have an Agenda.  And in the case of the Engineers, communicating that Agenda to humans might have the same success as a highway crewman trying to explain to an ant what a bulldozer is, and why they need to pave over an anthill.

Everybody is excited about the Aliens and BioEngineering; but I saw Prometheus as a story about Terraforming and MegaEngineering.  Engineered alien lifeforms need environments to live in, whether they're militerized bacteria or xenomorphs.  And the Alien Temple was obviously busy terraforming and making a sustained environment for entities with human DNA.  So I think we're going to see Scott go off in a very different direction... towards some type of mega-engineered world.  Whether that's a ringworld or planet fighting off being engulfed by a red giant... it's going to be nasty, nasty place.

Also, keep in mind that it's well established that Wayland-Yutani is in the business of terraforming.  That's cannon.  And that's the story Scott is interested in telling.  It speaks to modern concerns of global warming, environmental collapse, species extinction, terraforming mars, etc.

So, terraforming at the very least.  But probably mega-structures like Ringworlds and Dyson Spheres at the most.  The Engineers are a Kardashev II civilization if they've gotten to the point of terraforming planets and engineering entire species of xenomorphs.  Their homeworld Paradise is going to be a Kardashev II engineering monstronsity of terraforming gone amok.

I like those ideas...

I did and still think that LV 223 was a Lap that they tested and re-engineered and upgraded various life forms that they intended to then plant on Earth.... Earth was a Garden and LV-223 is the Greenhouse/Nursery.

I agree, it seems likely the Engineers have been terraforming and bioforming like crazy. But why?

[ramblings] The extra content on the Prometheus BluRay emphasized that the race of Engineers practiced their own religion. But what kind of spirituality, and how did that influence their choices? Was their notion of realization to not merely be passive observers of the Universe around them, but to become Creators that terraform/bioform/etc according to their own Design. Their own spiritual quest to ascend as Gods.

But yet. if they chose to follow that path, did they at some stage discover that in playing God, in playing with fire (the black goo catalyst), that unimaginable horrors have been unleashed. That those who seek to ascend as Gods are fated to die at the hands of their creations. [/ramblings]

I like where you're going with the idea of Greenhouse/Nursery.

In environmental engineering, particularly the area of salt-water aquariums, there's a construct called a Refugium.  It's a separate-but-connected tank that shares bacteria, water, nutrients, etc and acts as a 'backup' to the main resevoir.  Every time you visit a salt-water aquarium (probably at a zoo), there's a refugium connected somewhere.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Refugium_(fishkeeping)

Turns out that anatomically speaking, the human gut microbiome also has a refugium.  It's called the Appendix.
http://www.news-medical.net/news/2007/10/08/30907.aspx

Personally, I don't think LV 223 was the Lab, per se.  They're going to get to the Lab; but it's at Paradise.  LV 223 was a Refugium or Nursery, or maybe just the Garden Shed.  The Garden Shed where the herbicides and fertilizers are kept.

The actual lab will need to be much more Zoo like; with enclosed pens for animals.  But if they're doing it systematically and engineering things, it will probably be big....  think Jurrassic Park, at a minimum; but maybe much, much, much larger.

The tie between LV-223 and LV-426 is fairly obviously part of the same Agenda.  I would be surprised if they were both heading towards to Earth.  LV-223 would have been Earth's Refugium and/or Garden Shed; but LV-426 was probably a supply run to another planet's Garden Shed.

Supply run for what, though?  Seeding or harvest?  Garden prep or maintenance?

@phleagol

Indeed the Elders/Engineers relationship and culture and rituals of the Engineers was something very interesting that it seemed they had bold ideas for, that we however saw left out and tonned down for the Final Cut.

As far as playing with Fire and playing God, yes that seemed to be a theme and its one that i have been Informed will play a massive role in what was going on with the Engineers on LV-223 and also Paradise.

@biopnk

Yes interesting comparisons, when i looked at LV-223 i did not see it as the Lab where creation in General was taking place, just a Watch Post to watch over our Evolution and so they would come back with Life Forms from Earth and futher evolve and experiment with them on LV-223 before they would seed the desired results back to Earth.

So yes a Greenhouse if you would, if we consider them Genetic Gardeners, and Earth was the Garden.... but i also like the Garden Shed theory, where they would also store the the herbicides and fertilizers.

I think however there has been change of ideas and plans since Prometheus was being finished, and who can be sure of what way they are going know but it seems they have BIG PLANS we cant be sure how far the Rabit Hole goes and how deep they are going with what ever route they are taking... Certainly we are talking not only Engineering of Life.... but also what ever makes a Place able to support life and maybe its more complex and deeper than merely Terraforming of Worlds....

Ridley did hint at some huge scope..... and how Planets are able to support life because they are in the perfect Goldylocks Zone etc... and the Big Bang and how these things are not merely just coinsidence..... and i thought he was going for No more Gods!!!! But he did put the question out... where is the Big Guy behind all this.
