Hi guys

I have heard recently that it would be impossable to make an onscreen representation of the Space jockey.

The reason given is that it would have been laugable to have elephantine beings running around as it would have been comical or funny.

What do you guys think ??

Here are some pictures of Space Jockeys would any of them do onscreen ??

That was the one I wanted (bottom versions) could of been so cool I hope they go that way with the elders (and thank god they took the elders out from part 1 they looked awful!).

ODUODU - Now this is a very interesting topic! I personally feel that the original design for the Space Jockey would have been far more unsettling and sureal to see on screen - not ubsurd. The thought of such a massive, alien and unknowable being striding toward you in the dark of an ancient and forgotten star vessel is utterly disquieting! :)

Do you think the ones you like will have been accepatable onscreen. i like them . but how would they move and function on screen ??

What do you think ?

I like the look of them very much.

I like the original Space Jockey as well but i just dont know how it would appear onscreen.

Yes that is totally unsettling. especially if it is very dark and the jockey makes no noise while floating through the ship.

That does sound totally unsettling.

I dont want something like this looking over my shoulder while i am hiding on jugg:

I prefer this one:

Looks very eerie.

I totally agree that the elder that Ridley shot wasnt very good - they lacked that something ...

I agree Oduodu that certainly any of these designs would have been far more suitable than the lazy  Star Trek option of them being Schwarzenegger clones with black eyes. As to their onscreen representation as possibly being laughable, no more so than the Promethean engineers were.

I like the Daryl Joyce design (seems to share characteristics with the Alien Chestburster) but do think that portraying this onscreen would be difficult, make it bipedal and it would crap all over Ridley's steroid abusers.

We saw the bipedal, elephantine versions in the holographic recording of the engineers flight from whatever they were running from, and they didn't look laughable.

Also like the pics of Kthulu: Space Jockey's are somehow related to Kthulu, ties Alien in with Lovecraft (I always felt Alien was very "Lovecraftian" in its feel and themes.

Good point. Any designs you prefer ??

I think you mean these ??

Yes i like these. They seem to be tending the eggs on the derelict.

and by kthulo i assume you mean :

Wow I dont wanna meat any of these bad boys on a dark night !!

I actually thought they looked nice (Engineers) they had a very magestic look to them, i do however feel the scale of them was disapointing.... if they used trickery that LOTR and Hobbit used so they appeared to be 10-12ft tall then i think they would had looked better.

I think the idea they went with the Engineers was a bold one, but a tough plot to do justice and no wonder they are in a pickle and having to try and get around making it more simple.

The reasons they had to go that route was they had to figure how do we do a Alien Prequel that can cover the Space Jockey Race, and yet involve Mankind from before Alien.  Yes they could have shown us the Space Jockeys in a Flash Back etc,  and have it the reason that a Earth Mission went to say LV 426 system would have been due to the Signal as opposed to finding a star map on Earth

But i guess they thought how do we do a story that cover a flash back of these Space Jockeys and then a mission from Earth that either detected a signal or was sent to investigate one.....

When they got there what do they find?  Maybe a LV 223 complex, but after the movies it is layed waste...

But then we would ask where does a Prometheus 2 come in?  Surely in first movie there should not be masses of Space Jockeys alive or have them aware of us or wanting to come after us after we found their outpost..

And so if their homeworld is far far away, what reasons would Mankind want to go and find them?  To maybe go and find their Technology...?  its a bit of a Suicide Mission.

So having the Story they went with that they plaid a part in our creation and intended destruction was  a way they could go to their Homeworld based on the Agenda that Shaw has as far as nothing to go back to Earth for, but she wants to confront the Space Jockeys/Engineer and ask WHY?

So yes as they was basing them off Gods, and how we was created in their image, then yes they wanted them to be Human Looking to a degree, like many Cultures Gods are on Earth.

In hindsight when we look at ALIEN...

It left is with a ENIGMA that was the Space Jockey and his Cargo, the whole thing had a great sense of Scale.. and a very Un-Human look to the Ship and the Space Jockey..

But alas Ridley and Co did have it down to being a Space Suit, but thats not to say that they could have made the Race under it more Alien looking.

I dont like a lot of those Space Jockey designs mind bit too Alien and they assume  1) The Jockey has no Legs because we cant see them in Alien and that 2) They have large object or part of their body on their backs, because it may had been hard to work out what was Space Jockey and what was the chair.

I hate the idea of a Skeleton, yet the Alien Race of Giants in Star Beast it was a Skeleton of a un-human looking Race.....  I do however like the idea of it being Bio-Mechanical Exo-skeleton like the Xenos.

Here is the design i like the best...

Maybe with the Breathing pipe removed a bit like this... but more detailed like the first image..

I also like this one...

Re "I think you mean these??"

They are very good, a digital interpretation of the"Looks very eerie" Space Jockey by Daryl Joyce 2010. is it the same artist?

I am looking to find a digital artist who would be interested in illustrating my Alien prequel/ Prometheus retcon: Alien: Evolution's Nightmare. this is exactly the sort of thing I had in mind.

I did some concept sketches myself of some of the ideas I had and will post 'em soon. For now I have posted my ending of the story leading up to Alien, and my story ideas. Will post the first 10 - 15 story pages in the next few days. If you know of any digital artists who might be interested point them in my direction.

Cheers.

Dave those pix are excellent and would of course have been a more believable host for the Alien in A1. I did think the God like Humanoid was beautifully done by Ridley, but I felt the conection to the biomechanical World of Giger was missing. These would make sence, love the pipes.

Yes thats what I also think is that their has to be a human connection . You see it always has to be about "us" otherwise them kids wont take the parents to the movie. LOL

I like your Space Jockeys they seem very close to the original of alien but do you think they would work onscreen ??

I found this while looking for Daryl Joyce on google image search as you gave the name.

Daryl Jones has some nice work on his site..

Those ones i posted are by a artist called daobiwan and i think they would have been perfect, not to Alien, and not to Human and would have worked had they gone for the Space Jockey being a race that had no contact with Earth... or that it was a Race that used some Bio-Engineer Tech to upgrade life vis similar ways in Prometheus to procreate its kind or to create a Army for some kind of War they could have gone the route that we have a similar race to the Engineers come to Earth to Warn us about LV 223 is a place these Space Jockeys are planning to experiment on captured Humans and then unleash the desired experiement upon Earth once they tested that they can get the desired results from experiments first.

And our Engineers are another race experimented on or at War with the Space Jockeys and they sabotaged the operation on LV 223.

This is how i would have gone and i would have had it that the Engineers have different ships.

This idea would have left is with a reason to how a Earth mission could locate LV 223...  the only other way to had done this would have to remove the Engineers and have that they sent a mission to LV 426 but when getting there they detect something on LV 223 and instead set down on that world first.

In either case this would have allowed for a more Alien looking Space Jockey, i.e something not of this world....

But we do not know what route Prometheus 2 would take as for certain the Engineers are not Gods but merely what David 8 is to Mankind... but its how similar are the creators of the Engineers to them and Mankind or are they going to be different.

They could still show us a Race like those Images i showed... and have it that by re-engineer themselves they could create Xenos... and Engineers and our Space Jockey is a Engineer and Xeno Hybrid or that both races come from the Space Jockey.

They could go futher and show us our Elders and go with the Engineers and Mankind... but have it they found some Ancient Organism and experimented on this and created our Space Jockeys who then turned on their creators the Elders and their Engineers and proceeded to destroy the Engineers Hierarchy untill they offered a faction of them a truce and that was to become their slaves and repopulate Worlds with a different strain of DNA as opposed to the one that lead back to the Elders... and that Earth was bound to be upgraded to create a new Organism to use in these Space Jockeys conquests of the Galaxy.

In taking their part a faction of Engineers would be spared...

This kind of plot could have worked, but i feel they have shown us things in Prometheus that may make such a thing not work out...
