Will Ridley Scott Direct The Prometheus Sequel?

With the sad news from earlier this week, that Ridley Scott will no longer be directing the BladeRunner sequel, I wanted to get our members thoughts on the possibility that he will not direct the Prometheus sequel either.

To be honest I was pretty much devastated by that news. BladeRunner was Ridley's vision and something, I assumed, so close to his heart, that I almost can't believe he will not be returning as director. It just seems totally futile to me, having someone else direct.

I know that Ridley has worked on the story with Fancher and Greene, and will be closely involved with the production. I would have thought that this sequel would be unthinkable without his direction?

Given this news, I have been wondering if a similar situation will arise with the Prometheus sequel? It would be pretty sad if Ridley ends up not directing P2 either!

For me, both projects will lose their appeal without Ridley at the helm.

I agree with you there Lone, I think Blade Runner is pointless without Ridley directing. Speaking truthfully, I have lost all interest in the movie now. As for Prometheus 2, I hope he directs but I have no idea if he will or not.

That's the 1000-dollar question right there.

Scott simply won't say whether he will or not direct it himsel. fAll we can do is wish and speculate. After all this time, I guess it's just a matter of time before we know it. For two reasons: 1) The Martian will be wrapping this month and 2) Prometheus 2 will come out before Blomkamp's Alien 5.

Plus, his not directing Blade Runner 2 might be an indication he will have spare time to make Prom 2 (or whatever else....) immediately.

Lone, Im sorry you're taking this news so hard! But I understand, Ridleys vision is precious to me as well, as with all the artists I love, I want as much of their work as possible.

Alien impacted me hard for its merciless depiction of an alien organism, something I craved as a kid and that was not satisfied until Alien and The Thing. Then Blade Runner came along and a new hunger was awakened, it was the incredible aesthetic of the film, the thoroughly realized, singular and otherworldly depiction of the future.

My grandmother was an enthusiast of Japanese culture and I was influenced by that as a creative person, and Ridley felt like a kindred spirit, it was Alien and Blade Runner that made me aware of directors and their worth as artists, and this at a very young age.

I like to believe that BR's being handed off to another director means the decks are being cleared for Prometheus. I'm not aware of any other films he's talking about publicly at this time, so hopefully that's the case.

Let's not forget there was a little known sequel to a Ridley Scott classic called Aliens and many co-workers in Britian gave some one called: James Cameron a real hard time as many had worked with Ridley Scott on the original and thought this new, young upstart was tampering with a classic... I think it is safe to say he went on to prove everyone wrong and add an extra layer of depth to the franchise. Yes, Alien 3 was dissapointing in many ways but this new film and director could this time add a real daring twist upon the Blade Runner franchise.

There is no BladeRunner franchise!

Of course, now some 30+ years later, and given that nowadays studios only tend to remake and reboot, there may well be a money generating BR franchise!

Ridley not directing Bladerunner 2 and possibly Prometheus 2 is dissapointing! but it's also to be expected. He's never been a fan of making sequels because he, in his own words, doesn't like to tread old ground. I think that was the main reason Prometheus was almost unrecognisable as a part of the Alien universe and the reason that he would want to get away from "Dragons and Gods," if he makes a follow-up.

The poster was good though!

We have to remember Ridley is no Spring Chicken and the scedule of movies and other things he is a part of is a busy one, and so it makes sense that some of these he is not being the full Hands on Director.

But bet your bottom dollar he will have played a massive part in the Plot and Story and how the movies will look, and he may even be on set just not for the entire shooting process..

With regards to Prometheus 2 the news could mean that Ridley would take a more direct role in this movie, but again we cant be 100% sure... regardless i think he will have  a massive input into both Movies.

Necro and BigDave~ you both raise very valid points.

It's true that Ridley prefers to work on fresh projects, and yes, hopefully his influence will be massive on both sequels. I'm sure he is fully aware that the clock is ticking, and that probably explains why he has eggs in so many baskets!

Thanks guys, you've both made me feel a tad better about this! :)

I am sure.... unlike Lindeloff...

That Ridley has a end vission with how all things will connect, and while he and Fox may have had a change of plan with some ideas not only from Spaights draft but also after Prometheus.. i.e some things they are going to be like... we should change that and drop that.

But at this moment i think Ridley and Fox now do have a clear vision of where the series will go and also connect some of the dots with Alien, we just need to be patient and have trust.

I think bottom line is Ridley wants to get this 100% Right, he knows Prometheus did not do as well as expected and i am sure he and Fox would want to make sure the next movie is going to be Epic..

The rumoured 25 changes plus to the first draft submited by Paglen is testiment to them trying to evolve this project into something right!

But then we have the Dilema... Ridley will want to make a movie how he wants it, he does not care if his ideas are not what fans like... and at same time Fox will know about some of the complaints about Prometheus and what makes money... and so i think they would come together and give us something that satisfies Ridleys ideas, and that could also make fans and Fox Bank Ballance Happy.

But maybe this is why Alien 5 is being made? Gives some of the fanboys something to look forwards to, and if it holds some hints of the Xeno DNA and Goo connection then this leaves that as something Ridley can side step a little...

Alien 5 is also a chance to cash in on the Alien Cow once again.... seems it has some interesting ideas... Alien R had many too, only they was not executed well.

It's pretty likely that Ridley and Fox have had a re-think. There's been no rush to get the first sequel out, which I initially thought would happen almost immediately, but I'm glad that wasn't the case.

It's coming up to 3 years since Prometheus was released. It's a project which evolved and adapted, even as it was being made; Ridley's mind coming up with more and more ideas. From then until now, Ridley may have thought of fresh concepts, and changed his mind about what the sequels show us.

I remember a documentary from a while back, where Jake Scott said that even at home, Ridley was always constantly evolving and re-arranging his environment.

The mixed reception to the film may well play a small part too, although if Ridley is happy with it, then that won't really bother him, but he is very shrewd. Even some of us Alien die-hards have changed our feelings and views about Prometheus in the interim.

The amount of debate, criticism, and argument generated by Prometheus has ensured that interest in the future of the story remains high. However long it takes, I'm in it for the duration!

Perhaps Alien 5 can please the fanbase, but still have a freshness to it, leaving Ridley to explore new and bolder avenues with Prometheus 2 and 3?

Either way Fox win!

I was worried when I started this thread, but now I really think that Ridley will be directing Prometheus 2 at the very least. He had the Alien legacy taken away from him. The Prometheus saga is his catharsis!

We cant be sure about what Ridley is thinking at the moment and his comments do send us down a path, that his other comments kind of contradict.... not in a bad way..

For example... no more Dragons, and how they tonned down the DNA in Prometheus because they did not want to do another Alien movie or connect to it much, they wanted to leave us some clues and the biggest was the 3rd act, does he mean the Deacon?

Shaws Trillobite and Deacon was the main MONEY SHOT moment to link us to Alien, but then he wanted to go and explore the Engineers etc... so Prometheus was a movie that introduced to us 3 Plots in One....

1) Links to the Xeno DNA... LV 426... although vague..

2) Explore who the Space Jockey are their purpose.

3) Introduction to Weyland Company, what its aims are and achievements (David 8).

And so they had potential to explore each of these in more detail if they chose to or not.

But when we come back to the Dragon comment, saying he felt Prometheus was too close to Alien as far as Monsters.....   we are faced with the FACT that David has a Engineer Ship that has a Cargo onboard and that unless its from a different Base/Temple that has different DNA or variation then ultimately the links we saw in Prometheus, we would surely see similar DNA strands?

Plus also how Ridley said that they wish to explore a new Monster, a Fresher form of the Original.... by that surely they must mean the Xeno Eggs on the Derelict and our Alien that spawned from them in Alien.... or does he imply the means of which he intended this Organism to Reproduce?

So in the Original does he mean as far as the basis for the Oranism in Star Beast as that draft and Alien was similar but just a different looking product that performed the same task.

When we come to no more Gods, i think Ridley wants to try and side step the tricky questions that having Engineers and Elders as basically Gods and who many religons was bassed on and by that not just the Magic Man in Sky Abrahamic ones, but the other ones which could include Greek, Indians, Native Americans, Mayans, Summarians and Egyptian etc.

But maybe they now have had a slight change of plan, because the the implicatins and difficulties such a plot would hold....

Ridley did not want to meet God in the first movie..... thus Engineers are not God, maybe the Elders are but surely they can not be older Engineers then?  Maybe the Elders are going to be shown in Part 2...

But then why not leave the Elder Scene in?  Ridley was a bit disapointed with the look of the Elders, they did not come across as Magestic and Awe Inspiring that a Godlike race would be..

Could the removal of the scene mean we are going to see a re-design of the Elders? Or that our Engineers will all be portrayed as we saw in the movie and beings who do not age or get frail?  Or are the Elders being replaced by something else? Most likely.

There was a lot of tonning down on the Engineer Scenes, the Engineer Speaks, the Last Battle that showed our Engineer was interested and bewildered by not only the Voilin Girl, but also the Books he found on the floor.

The deletion of scenes and re-shot scene now shows our Engineer to be well not very happy chappy and one who does not see Humans of being significant at all, it also seems to show our Engineers in a lesser light as far as purpose..

Now they seem to be just expendble Pawns in some Larger Plan...

This seems to be the new route they are taking...

We was after all not going to meet God in the first movie, and what Shaw and David find are not Gods, not in the traditional sense, they are also not a Benevolent Race...  Ripley did also say the Engineers in Prometheus where Agressive "$"£%"£%^

So the no More Gods, could point to some more sinister plot, one that may move away from these beings or bieng on Paradise being as God, creating Earth and all plants and animals and us.. for his pleasure .. well a reason that has no sinister plot.

And also to step away from the other Ancient Astronaught Aliens ideas...

What that would intail and where they are going with this, is anyones guess... as the potential is still Huge..

But i think they do have to midly give us some clues to the Xeno LV 223/426 connection and the why they visited Earth and then wanted us destroyed plot...

FWIW, IMDb has updated status on The Martian. It is now in post production.

We should hear news about Scott's upcoming directorial gig in months.

I'm pretty sure that he will direct the sequel. Except 'The Forever War' there is no film left, he could direct in future.
