For those of you who remember, there were discussions about whether or not Prometheus would be an R rating. The same discussions are certainly ready to appear in again with a P2 project in the pipeline. In the UK there is going to be a major re think of how films are classified with the introduction of a R18 as well as an 18 certification. Whether the Us will follow suit is any one guess, but  I have added a link below for the new UK guidelines due to come in force after Feb 24th ( UK only ) .

Maybe we have not heard much about P2 is because those in charge of production, want to know how much impact new censorship changes might affect future production. There is always the possibility this could affect scripts since the censorship changes are taking a close look at bad language used in films, and I bet they will want to set some examples.

With luck it will be rated X.

Never has so much been on the line with a sequel for me! This forthcoming movie has the power to absolutely devastate my life if it sucks!

I agree that potential hard ratings can have a surprisingly negative effect on profits. (Some countries/theatres won't play them, parents won't take the kids, etc.) however; I'm sure the 'cult' following Prometheus has gained will suffice regardless Of any rating system.

i, for one, will be camped out, re-enacting every scene from Prometheus solo. (In my gich) presale for tickets to that is on now, btw. Contact me.

Damn BBFC, we'll probably end up with some s**t, family friendly film like Avatar.

Prometheus was classified 15 for the purpose of making more money and i would assume that FOX would want to do the same with part 2? So, will they have to re-script the whole thing, delete certain scene's, or water them down?

I would REALLY hope for an 18 classification, but unfortunately, i can't see that happening! :(

The poster was good though!

Prometheus bombed in the cinema, it was a disapointment as Fox hopped a Cert 15 would allow more viewers but mainly Alien Franchise fans who went to see the movie, and also casual Sci Fi fans.

Yes there would have been a number of casual viewers who went to see it and no doubt a lot of them would not have had a clue what this movie was trying to achieve.  They would been like what the hell was that all about.

Now Sci Fi fans would have more of a clue that we are seeing a movie linked to Alien and if they would have not quite got the point.

Hardcore Alien fans well there would have been a mixed reaction from them.

What Fox needs to now do is try and please the Prometheus fans and those who was looking forwards to a good movie and was left disapointed, because if they try and aim it at the casual viewers they may not bite the bait.

Unless they simply call it Paradise and then hope the trailers may fool some to thinking its another Sci Fi movie because a number of people who saw Prometheus if they found out it was a sequel may decided to give it a miss.

Unless they can crank up the hype and viral campaign...

I recon they should cater for the Alien and Prometheus fans give us a 18 Cert and learn from some complaints about Prometheus and should the movie please the Alien and Prometheus fans and gain rave reviews then that would start to attract the more casual viewer to see whats all the rage about. etc.

Um... I wouldn't call a 51Million dollar opening weekend bombing. (This is double what The Matrix made opening weekend)

A total of 400 Million isn't exactly peanuts either. Thats a 220 Million dollar payday on a budget of 180M. It may not have been the blockbuster Fox had hoped for, but it made money; and enough to warrant a sequel.

(Also action figures, comic series, and more...)

I agree with your take on the right target audience 100%.

(I was an exception, i had a friend take me, and i had no idea at the time that this was connected to Alien in any way! I'm only an Alien fan because of Prometheus.)

Keeping the fanboys on both sides happy and letting us create the buzz is perfect! Well said Sir Dave.

(Your tickets to the undy show are in the mail. i put you down as a 'Plus One')

DJ-hah, no. I'm imagining a sensationalist "X" rating for extreme violence or disturbing images.

I don't require violence, but the opportunity for extreme surreal space horror hasn't really been explored since Carpenter's The Thing, in my opinion. I liked the retro vibe of Prometheus, but I wouldn't argue with some hard suffering of the unimaginable sort, and the potential is there, obviously.

I love that they expanded the Morb biology. I think there's all sorts of terrible possibilities without necessarily a drop of bloodshed. We'll see.

Yer I know...it is one of the annoying things about big budget films these days - they always try to pander to everyone ending up with a wishy washy resault. Or sometimes muddled or inconsistant -feeling like too many cooks...give me the good old days of 18 and just make the bloody film any way you want (alien) type days.

@everyone, hey happy new year again everyone!

This is a great topic to discuss. I agree will everyone more or less. I have been watching the Alien franchise since I was in grade school, some 34 years ago.

When I went and saw the first Alien film in the theater this film scared people so bad that they were running out of the theater. People were watching from the back of the theater as if it could make it safer to view. This film scared people so bad in 1979 that had they known how violent the chest buster scene would be for viewers to watch they probably would never have been able to give it anything less than an X rating and not be able to show it at all in movie theaters at the time.

How times have changed. On TV right now there is much more graphic and more frequent violence than in all movies put together that are released in a single year. TV is just as violent as R rated movies of course but without the sex. Even watching shows like the Black List and Fox’s now completed Fringe scare me. There is some really scary stuff

on the Black List.

I find it hard to imagine that they could do a very hard R for the sequel to Prometheus. I state this because there are so many films that that have been released in the past five years that have been so graphic it would be hard to top them. The scene with the Hammerpede was comparatively tame with respect what is in films currently.

Everyone should take a look at a movie called “Slither”. That has some fairly graphic elements that if done in the right way could have made Prometheus a much better film.

I am just as upset and tired of the “kiddy” violence as everyone else. To me Prometheus was almost an attempt maybe to sell toys. It is not a scary movie at all and in fact it plays it way too safe for even adults to appreciate it tastefully. We all go to movies for different reasons and secretly I was hoping when I began watching this film that Scott was going out do everything in way that he could do and give us something even more special than Alien. I like the film in parts and do not at all care for it as a whole.

We all have our gripes about this film but we were cheated bad here. I am always disgusted when I see the stupid monster that Dr. Holloway’s character turns into and in fact I just fast forward through the blu-ray every time I get close to the scene. I was devastated watching this part of the film for weeks. I still dislike it immensely but I am hopeful as everyone else that we will get the film that we wanted with Paradise.

Writing that Prometheus tanked, box-office-wise, is simply incorrect. The total cost of the film, including P&A, was 180 million (source is Boxoffice.com). Not including P&A, it was 130 million.

A 400 million gross worldwide plus DVD/BD revenue and rights sales for TV exhibition (+ toys and other merchandising) are more than enough to cover the budget and probably bring in some profit after is all said and done.
