Shocking news comes from Kenya after an enormous abelisaur was unearthed. This new giant theropod dethrones Ekrixinatosaurus as the largest abelisaur at an estimated 12 meters (40 feet) in length, putting it on par with the largest of the Tyrannosaurus specimens. The colossal ceratosaur is currently unnamed, but its identity may already be known. Since the discovery of the 10-11 meter Ekrixinatosaurus in 2004, whispered rumors of an even bigger abelisaur from Africa known as "the predator" crept around the web. Some say it was a tyrannosaur, while others say it was an abelisaur. What both parties agree on, however, is that it was truly titanic, being in the Tyrannosaurus size range. This news is apparently very new, but details have already emerged. Known from the skull and spines of multiple individuals, the abelisaur has no horns, crests, knobs or ridges but has a thick and very robust skull. Our giant in question lived during the end of the cretaceous in the maastrichtian stage, unfortunately meaning we probably will never find a Carcharodontosaurus locked in combat with this new giant theropod, which I call "Thantosaurus brontos", meaning "thundering death lizard". I feel that's appropriate for an animal that looks like a hornless version of this... Cool. Hmm, maybe Megloneotyrannus. Great new tyrant. Naaa, lets go with Megalthanatusaurus. Great death lizard. It sounds around 8 tons too. That would be a great contender for DinoFights.

Please tell me there is info backing this up other than this guy from Devian Art. Need I say, The Horror Mouth and company?

It is a very very very recent discovery. This one seems legit judging by who it's coming form though and it seems real. Horror mouth seemed too hard to believe from the start, but this one is probable to exist and now confirmed!

It's more believable, but still. I haven't found any articles about it. The only info I've found so far has come from Devian Art and the guy on there has not given any sources of info about it. Where did he hear about it from? Who found it? Devian Art ain't exactly the most reliable source of info.

Is there an article or anything about the discovery anywhere? I just searched "Tyrannosaur sized abelisaur" and "New Giant Abelisaur" on google but still no word on it. Either way this is awesome if anyone finds anything please post some info on it!

If there's an official statement or article about it, great. But if this is such a recent and important discovery, than I'm sorry, but how did some guy on Devian Art find out about it?

I agree with Rex Fan how is it that such random people are the ones announcing all these huge discoveries and i can never find anything on it... You would figure something this profound would be somewhere on the internet. and strangely enough a lot of times news like this does come from Deviant Art.

I agree. It didn't take long for Montana's Dueling Dinosaurs to hit the press. Or the 10 meter dinosaur found in Canada. This is bigger than the 10 meter dinosaur from Canada(literally and in terms of importance) and just as major as Montana's Dueling Dinosaurs. Why no articles or statements? Not saying it's not true, but there are a lot of holes in it.

Thanks MrHappy. I'm not trying to be a downer or anything, I'm just saying perhaps we need to take this info with a really big grain of salt. PS- I've ridden that ride at Disney World, haha

Well this is good--- (I don't think disney nailed the dinosaur theme quite well, which would explain why they havent done anything about that since) Cant help but feel like dinofights sister was involved with this discovery in the slightest

Well, DinoFights told me a while ago that she was back. So if she had any involvement, we would have heard about it by now.

An, she wasn't there. At least I don't think. Last I heard (from DinoFights) she had found an Ouranosaurus foot, which means she's probably somewhere around morocco or Egypt.

Here's an interesting info: A GIANT ABELISAURID THEROPOD FROM THE LATEST CRETACEOUS OF NORTHERN TURKANA, KENYA SERTICH African fossil record of Cretaceous non-marine vertebrates has expanded significantly over the past two decades. However, these discoveries have been limited to Lower and middle Cretaceous horizons with a conspicuous absence of fossils from the latest Cretaceous, an interval of prolonged African isolation. Recently recovered vertebrate fossils from the Lapurr Mountains of northwestern Turkana, Kenya, comprise the first definitive non-marine fauna from this critical terminal Cretaceous interval. This diverse fauna from the Lapurr sandstone (“Turkana Grits”) has been dated to the Maastrichtian and includes crocodyliforms, pterosaurs, and dinosaurs. Though fragmentary, the dinosaur record includes at least two iguanodontian ornithopods, three macronarian sauropods, and two large theropods. Here we report on one of these theropods, a new abelisaurid that significantly expands the upper limits of body size in ceratosaurians and represents the youngest diagnostic dinosaur material yet reported from the Afro-Arabian continent. The new taxon is known from multiple isolated specimens including portions of the skull, axial column, and appendicular skeleton. Referral of unassociated remains to a single taxon is based on morphological consistency and on the recovery of specimens from a narrow stratigraphic and geographic area. A comprehensive phylogenetic analysis substantiates referral of the new Kenyan taxon to Abelisauridae based, among other features, on the presence of a tall, rugose premaxilla, an anteroventrally inclined posterior border of the postorbital, and a prominent dorsal projection of the parietals and supraoccipital. An associated partial skull is strongly coossified, with a thickened but weakly sculptured skull roof. Unlike many other abelisaurids, no prominent cranial ornamentation is evident. As in other ceratosaurians, the astragalocalcaneum is completely coossified and displays a prominent transverse sulcus on the anteroventral surface. Like other abelisaurids, the ascending process is low and subrectangular, separated from the anterior surface of the astragalus by a distinct fossa. Comparison of preserved elements with those of other, more complete abelisaurids indicates that the new taxon likely exceeded 11-12 meters in length. Furthermore, the presence of a large- bodied abelisaurid in the Kenyan fauna parallels many other Late Cretaceous Gondwanan faunas, reflecting global early Late Cretaceous turnover from allosauroid and spinosaurid dominated ecosystems." Well, it is neother official or confirmed by an official source, but it's interesting :)

I agree. I saw that you copied that from the guy from theropods wiki. He apparently found that. It moves me a bit further to believe that this is true.

I still have yet to find any info on it. No links from anyone(except for one from DinoFights to Devian Art). Nothing on the internet. Nothing. Sorry, but I'm still suspicious.

Hi there! I'm the one who drew the giant abelisaur. The reason why there's no additional info on the internet is because it's still to be formally presented at the SVP meeting in Los Angeles in a few days, but yeah, it's very real!
