The same blather we've heard a million times. Although, I am a little annoyed that Ridley has so many other projects lined up ahead of it... : / [Prediction] 'Prometheus 2' Is Not Going To Happen!

Sorry, but I don't buy it. Prometheus made enough cash to warrant a sequel, a writer has been hired, I got confirmation officially, that scouting had been taking place for potential roles. It's going to happen - the only question is when. Alien (and now Prometheus) are one of Fox's largest franchises. They'll definitely be continuing it on. Whether we have to wait till 2016, that's a different story. But I 100% believe it's going to happen. But hey, I'm optimistic. ;)

I'd just like to add that it's a good article, PROMETHEUS was originally marketed as an ALIEN prequel, even the trailers & trailer music made it appear that way. Then of course we were told it wasn't a direct prequel! That certainly annoyed & disappointed many ALIEN followers, many of whom don't like PROMETHEUS & won't bother going to see a sequel. :-( I certainly hope there will be sequels, but after the mixed reception the film received, I think both Fox & Ridley will be having a serious rethink about the direction they take! Personally I think PROMETHEUS is a hybrid ; an ALIEN reboot crossed with Ridleys ambition to make a 2001 type mythology. We all know how he admires Stanley Kubrick, the obvious parallels being - his early student film - Paths of Glory, The Duellists - Barry Lyndon, Gladiator - Spartacus, etc!

Yes kinda what I feared and was saying before about 400 million not being that great for what this was supposed to be...I think it can still happen but the 2nd one better be amazing or it could well be the end :( ...and who ever was over seeing the viral stuff - please sack em and get someone to make it all make sense and actually work this time - that could of been awesome instead of a mess!!

I've considered it also that after Tony Scotts death, that Scott Free has gone into the freezerinos on Prometheus. Plus all the mixed feed back from the first film. I don't want to believe that Sir Ridley Scott will abandon the sequel to Prometheus but just as the back cover of the blueray I own says "Questions will be Answered". More will be questioned? Like those poor security guards for Weyland as he was being suited up. They were relaxing, hitting up some helmet bongs, when suddenly the ship took off and within a minute was in a crash up derby. I watch the film last night for the 30th time stoned. I'm being to feel that it is aging gracefully with time. Like wine that will not ever be drunk.

IMHO, I think it will happen, but not for a long time! Ridley will do what he wants to do, when he wants to do it. Don't get me wrong, i'm a huge fan of his, but unfortunately, I believe that the wants of the hardcore followers of the Alien universe are a side thought to him.

The poster was good though!

I'm worried about the fact that Ridley is already 76 years old. And since nobody has eternal life, he better hurry up with this sequel or we may never know how he envisioned 'Paradise'. But I don't think the franchise matters that much to him anymore. If you ask me, he stopped caring about it when Fox decided to let Cameron do the sequel to Alien.

@Gimmeafacehug, I really don't think he doesn't care about the Alien universe, as he had been thinking about the space jockey since he made Alien, resulting in Prometheus. I think he wants to crack on with it but he is just going with the flow and doing other projects that he really wants to do, like he's got all the time in the world and he's going to live for ever. He really should get on with Prometheus 2 and Bladerunner 2 because they will be his lasting legacy.

The poster was good though!

Yeah, I think it'll happen eventually as long as Ridley stays alive and well. He's passionate about the project and wants to get it right, so it'll probably just be several years down the road. Ugh, I wish they'd just go ahead and film the next two back-to-back. It saves money, anyway. Even though Prometheus didn't necessarily do well enough to warrant such action, I think that Ridley is the caliber of filmmaker that they should allow it. Even though Prometheus has been a very divisive film, there is still a very passionate following behind it.

Lone That. Was well said. Because prometheus without the alien franchise means nothing imho. As you also said p2 has got be spectacular to make it work.

hi necronom, sup? :) i tried to post a fairly long reply but I got timed out. Long story short: I agree with Djamelaziane saying that 400 million dollars just isn't enough for what this was supposed to be and I do hope that Ridley still cares about the movie-universe that sort of jumpstarted his career.

@Gimmeafacehug, I agree. Prometheus is incomplete without a sequel but I really think that Ridley doesn't like to leave anything unfinished. A lot of people see him as nothing more than a director, when you and me both know that he is also an artist. Like most artists, he will start a project, then get side tracked by another project leaving the first project with a note on it saying, "TO BE COMPLETED." I heard him say in a documentary or interview that, he just stays on his toes, constantly jumping from one project to another because he doesn't want to feel like he's standing still. Now, Prometheus 2 will need a lot of time spent on it before it even makes it to pre-production. I just wish that it would all have been thought out before he started on Prometheus!

The poster was good though!

$400 million is plenty. The general rule of thumb is that for a film to be profitable it has to make double it's production budget. Production budget was $130 million. Even with the total budget ($180 million) the film was still quite profitable. Not to mention Blu-ray/DVD sales. Hence why the studio is up for a sequel. I don't think the studio necessarily cares that the film was somewhat divisive amongst movie-goers. In my opinion, I think that had more to do with people's expectations. People thought it was going to be like another Alien series film (Ridley did try to steer people away from thinking that). Thank god it wasn't exactly, because the expanded mythology and contemplative themes are much more interesting. And now that people know better what to expect, a sequel will likely be received better. And with a 74% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, I'd say the film was a critical success as well as a financial success.

You forgot to minus the $200 million that came from people going to see it because it was alien franchise :P and left pissed off ! If the film was made well it could of easily hit $800 million (funnily enough thats how much GTA V just made in 24 hours :O ). Prometheus isnt even near the top 100 : http://boxofficemojo.com/alltime/world/ and yes I know allot of them are shit films :P face it - it was not even an average profit for what the film was supposed to be. Rotten tomatoes is an awful way to see how good a film is as well avengers got 92 percent :O ! But if you really want to compare Prometheus to alien this way - it got 97 percent :O now that is almost correct for me :D ... Prometheus should of been in the 90s and over 800 mill if it was a success that was going to go 3 parts and be sure to blow us away unfortunately.

@djamelameziane, I agree. It beat Avatar for preordering Imax-tickets or something, and since Avatar grossed a billion dollars worldwide... Here's the problem with prometheus 2: it has to convince all the alien-freaks that it is not going to be another letdown, or they won't go see it...me included. Prometheus 1 didn't have that problem. The people who will go see the sequel are the people that actually liked Prometheus 1. And since the prometheus-fanbase isn't THAT large, I wonder how they will ever make more money than the first movie.

Yes and this is why its gotta be a great film to get to part 3. I reckon the executives are right on the line of weather this gets made or not but I feel its slightly more likely to happen than not. Would be annoying if ridley doesn't finish it.

"What the film was supposed to be." It was supposed to be profitable. And it was, significantly. Not everything has to put up Iron Man 3 or Avatar or The Avengers numbers to get continuations. The studio has already said they're up for it... they've hired a writer and are looking for talent. The only question really at this point is how long it will take and if Ridley will still be able to do it.

in fact I think that's one of the big questions here...Ridley Scott will be directing the sequel? or we only see him in charge of the production? The lapse of time between Alien and Aliens is seven years. Now, I don't think that in this case the wait will be as long, but the sequel is a fact, what is uncertain is the direction of the project, and obviously I hope I'm wrong.

With all this discussion about $400M and whether that is or is not enough to warrant a sequel, I submit a query... Who says Fox Studios was expecting to make more on a R-rated sci-fi film? I haven't heard anything from Fox stating that $400M was not good. The last I heard was the studio was moving forward with Scott and writers on a sequel and some casting research was being done. Okay, so they can change their mind and scrap it all, but I haven't heard anything from the studio or anyone else officially involved state that it's being scrapped. Until "official" news comes out stating it's not happening, I expect they're moving forward as they last indicated. At what pace, I have no idea.

We are going by what the film industry says about other projects and general stuff. Plus I work in the industry so I get to see allot of stuff personally. And 400M for a film of this magnitude is only just past enough for warranting a part 2. I am not saying its not on - just saying its only just still on and in the balances. Allot of people went to see this because of alien - now I really don't think as many will go because of Prometheus but fingers crossed its an amazing part and the boat gets steadied and part 3 comes as well! 30 years in the waiting finally a follow up to alien from one of the best directors in history - beaten in the box office by 163 million by the smurfs! Nuff said!
