Hey guys and gals. I heard this line and thought, the distance is all screwed up. Another script mistake. However, there is an interview with Damon Lindelof where he suggests that this line is not a screw up. So the question is: Is Wayland corporation sitting a half a billion miles away from LV226? Thoughts? ‘Prometheus’ Screenwriter Damon Lindelof Tweets All Quote: Charlize [Theron] has a line in the movie where she says, “I wouldn’t be half a billion miles away from every man on earth if I wanted to get laid.” And Neil deGrasse Tyson [the well-known astrophysicist] came out said “This would put her somewhere in the neighborhood of Jupiter, when they are much, much further out.” I chose not to say anything because the line was intentional. It had been dinged before we even shot it. But we stuck by it for reasons I don’t feel like discussing.

maybe this Lady Droid corporate BlessYou thinks this is a Mission to One of the Moons of Jupiter? LOL

Yeah I saw that interview just over a week ago and was wondering about that, too. If that suggests that the Prometheus was re-routed by MUTHUR because it picked up a signal of unknown source on one of 66 Jupiter's orbiting moons, and they have in fact NOT landed on LV-223, then I'll pass out!! After regaining consciousness I'll pay Ridley a personal visit... LOL

Having suggested that HAL9000, remember that the "Prometheus Has Landed" scene (in all the trailers, and not the movie) has a ringed world like SATURN in its background. Remember also, that a similar sci-fi film from Fox (Cameron's Avatar) was based around a planet that looked A LOT like Jupiter.

clearly there is a reason for her line. Sounds like we will eventually find out.

Phew... in that case no fears of a crossover then, since Jupiter has no rings. Yeah let's see if this little mystery (or glitch) will ever be revealed. But then, things like this happen when you're 75 and in a rush, ha-ha! Remember the rather bold tagline in the featurette "Prometheus - 30 Years in the Making"? 'Every King has his reign' but maybe we all ARE in for a surprise, let's just wait and see.

Just a flippant, off the cuff remark before sex, what's all the fuss about? Put away your verniers and sextons, Christ.....

maybe she meant that as a reference to most of the men on earth "working" on another planet as opposed to earth (if you read the timeline, Weyland has already started terraforming on multiple planets by the year of the movie) so maybe she meant that it was Half a Billion Miles from Every man on earth - because most of the men on earth are not on earth but on another planet and they are half a billion miles from THAT planet. or maybe we should all just smoke a whole bunch of weed and watch the movie again.

I agree with zeta here... She is thinking about sex with Janek when she comes onto the bridge. Janek says the line "Y'know if you wanna' get laid...." Vickers is a control junkie and then she knows Janek wants the same thing, probably the only person she would show that part of herself to(his aurthority and rank an all)... so as she's deciding whether or not to sleep with him she needs to make him jump to her being in control, so the character fires this line at him... ... whever she's wrong or not... its not about distance, its about sex and her being in control!

Oh and maybe she sees sex as part of her arsena, (seems the human race doesn't get over(anytime soon) the promise of sex makes people do anything, after all Janek leaves the bridge to partake in rufty and f**k Milburn and Fifield... they'll be alright, so maybe she would have some control over Janek and a say about what happens on the ship and out of it.

Anyone also notice that in the "Prometheus - Art of Film" inner page there is actually artwork which looks suspicously like Jupiter! (Even with what looks like Europa and IO ! Just saying this could have originaly been part of a premise not then used.

Could it just be another example of our film makers misjudging how thoroughly their film would be dissected? To me, she's just throwing out a random number to substantiate her point, not really thinking about it. I've done it, like, a million times myself.

Mmm...Maybe a nod to 2001? Part of it is set around Jupiter.
Have you heard of phoenix asteroids? They glow in every color of the rainbow...they travel endlessly through space...

Major Noob, could it be that we've all been LOOKING TOO DEEPLY into Messrs Lindelof/Spaiht/Scott's slap-n-dash of a (dialogue/structure) script, like it was ever supposed to mean anything other than the Greedy Kerching of the box-office tills? Look what happens when a new Steven Segal film comes out, for example, NOBODY gets to see rushes or previews, nobody's allowed to REVIEW it. Same here, except that 1) we saw a lot of flashy bits in virals and 2) didn't realise the myth didn't gel; until spending our ten dollars or whatever your local rate. Maybe Scott's not bringing out an Extended/Director's Cut because there's nothing of value or substance, no magic plaster, to 'make it all better'. Prometheus 2 (2014-15, Christ) or the TV SERIES might make up for all the glaring errors and cheapness that was the original film - seriously, I DID NOT SEE where $120,000,000 went.

@FreePlanet: I have to agree with you there, well put. But the fact that everyone's dissecting 'Prometheus' to this detail already shows that most of us here (including myself) like and respect the movie as it stands, despite relatively minor critizism. Hardly any of the recent films in the Sci-Fi or in fact in any other genre gets analysed to this extend. I guess if you'd start dissecting a Steven Segal movie, you wouldn't even know where to start, haha! However, I was also asking myself where those $120,000,000 went, even considering the huge amount of real physical sets been built. I was kind of hoping that he pulled the same thing Cameron did with the Avatar franchise, being all resourceful and saving the penny, especially when you consider that along the line he obviously realised that he can't tell his story in one go. Ridley is well known for being economical and I wouldn't have been surprised if he did a 2 for the prize of 1 stunt and get us all gobsmacked. @punx + Zeta: I don't think sex was the original thought or issue in this thread, how could you two cheeky monkeys possibly throw that one in? Ha-ha! No really, just kidding. I sort of agree with you guys there. I guess the point was that everyone was just fishing for a wicked twist in the plot for 'Paradise', purely based on Lindelof's reaction on this matter. I'd be absoluely pissing myself if some well known floating black monolith orbiting Jupiter is after all made of hardened black goo!!!

I was watching a interview with RS about Prometheus prior to release and he mentioned the story (movie) is about a group of people who travel out to a moon that orbits Jupiter and lands in search of our makers. I did not put any stock in at the time thinking it was just RS giving a brief synopsis of the film. Now you got me thinking Tokyokid. Has anyone done the math on their flight time yet? Traveling 2.5 years at 18,000 miles an hour. Not sure if the speed is correct but the time frame is per the movie dialog.

Did you look at the Weyland site? Almost every planet is colonised, not just Earth. Maybe Weyland Industries isn't on Earth.

Wow, that one little line is getting looked into way too much. I thought about it during the movie too, but then passed it off. 1. It's just a little phrase-type thing. Why would she say exactly the number of miles they are away from Earth when she could just say "half a billion?" 2. It's a gas giant. It's going to look like Jupiter or Saturn. That's a planet for you there. Case closed.

Dopelganger, 18,000 MPH X 2.5 years = 394 million miles. No, I am not the rainman. I used WolframAlpha with this query "18000 mph for 2.5 years" speed of light X 2.5 years = 14.7 trillion miles "speed of light for 2.5 years" They are supposed to be going faster than light, ala the FTL drive. To determine the speed, we would need to know the distance. At any rate, LV223 is a long ways away and further than 500 million miles.

Anyone have the distance from the beginning of the movie? I am thinking it was 3.26 X 10^14 km, which would be 34.46 light years. 3.26 X 10^13 km would only 3.446 light years, which seems more reasonable.

To me this is just a comment like we all make... How many times have you said when asked for something or to do something. I will only be a second, or a minute.... when you actually take longer. Or when you say to someone look i already told you a million times, when you never. If they are hinting at that distance being real then either they land on a planetoids in our Sol System, or they have another ship or outpost in the same Zeta Star System. I find both above bizarre and major plot hole if true, well disappointment.

Why does no one bother to read previous comments anymore?? As far as I understood the original post, it is much more about how Lindelof reacted when being asked about this and not to determine an exact mileage to LV-223! I agree that Vickers's line has to be seen as a phrase, at least I bloody hope so. Peace.
