Its a flawed piece of work for sure, obviously hobbled by there being no finished script to begin with but there is much to love about both versions of the movie in the Quadrilogy boxset. But nothing is perfect. For a start it was different to the previous two, the ending in particular. The first two featured variations on the 'blew it out of the goddamn airlock' theme. The ending of Alien 3 was something else. I think the whole movie is a very human tale, much like the original. And like the 1979 film it also goes some way to recapture the sense of mystery of a single xenomorph rather than having a planet full of them. The cast I think were also a positive feature, some of the interplay between Charles Dance and Brian Glover in particular is delightful. When you see two British actors in scenes like that its almost like watching a friendly jousting contest with two men that clearly know their craft and enjoy delivering the lines of the script. And there are some fine examples of British swearing throughout the movie, that is using swearwords not as a shock tactic but to augment and boost the colour of your dialect. The part where Morse berates a fellow prisoner for carrying scissors in the wrong way is familiar to anyone who's worked in a British warehouse for its coarse affection. The only part I really have issue with is the beginning. I didn't see the alien queen carrying an extra egg under her arm to stash in the Sulaco when she was chasing Ripley and Newt towards the end of the previous movie (the ovapositor having been previously destroyed). And surely someone would have noticed it hanging there in the cryo-room. So I think overall it was a atmospheric horror story as opposed to an action adventure film which could be said of Aliens and Resurrection. Well worth another look I reckon.

@joeymanic: Ill add more to the conversation when i have a bit of time. I just wanted to say 1) great post! 2) I completely agree with your sentiments regarding alien 3. The film is criminally underrated. I feel like it brings some much needed dimensionality to the post-aliens franchise.

One of the tings I like about the Predator films (until the last one, which seemed to take a step back) is that each one places them in a different time period/scenario and they seem to have new, clever devices, weapons, etc. Aliens did that with many more numbers of them, a look at their lair/home -- and of course, the queen alien. But other than the facehugger copulating with a dog and therefore acquiring some of its characterisitics, Alien 3 was really nothing different IMO. One could understand that Ripley had FINALLY had it with these creatures; they seemed to follow her -- or she to them -- for decades! And for the 3rd time out of 3 movies, Weyland Industries tries but fails to get its corporate hands on a xeno -- i.e., same old - same old (one has to wonder how they ever become so succe$$ful with so many MORONS apparently running the show?

I loved the dark feel and dread in this film, i didnt like the start when i saw it at the cinima as I thought Ripley and Hicks where gona kick Alien ass but from a film makers point of view Hicks had to be killed of f and i respect that. We all know the film had its difficulites but in the end it weemed to work pretty well, Fincher is a great film maker, his dark mature style always works well with me. I perticularly like watching the special features disk in the Quadrilogy (No spell checker today sorry) Shame Fincher didnt get a crack at AlienResurection too, im sure it would have been a better fim with him at the helm.. Well Done David Fincher :)

When I first saw alien3 in the theater, I enjoyed it, but it left me wanting for something more or better. When I picked up the quadrilogy, the first film i watched was the dcut of alien3 and for some reason I loved it. The removed scenes and plot points were all it needed to make it complete in my book.
ALL generalizations are WRONG!

I'm glad someone made this thread, I just finally got a chance to watch this a few nights ago after purchasing the anthology a few months back at the recommendation of Spartacus, which he singled out the directors cut of Alien 3 as being a master piece in itself on the blu-ray set. Alien 3 was the first in the series that I had ever watched and I remember enjoying, although I was 12 at the time. I've really only viewed it once or twice since that time. After watching again with all of the additional scenes all I can really say that's bad about the movie is the CGI alien which looks extremely unrealistic on a HDTV. The biggest complaint from everybody that I can remember when it came out was the death of Hicks and Newt, not the quality of the film itself.

I'm currently watching Alien 3 The Directors cut on my iphone on the bus on my way to work.It takes me about three or four days to watch an entire film this way.I enjoy it because your wearing headphones I can focus more on dialogue.Just for the record, this isn't the only way I watch my movies.I have a nice big flat screen in my living room. The Directors cut makes more sense. The Alien gets born from an Ox(see pic). You get to know the prisoners better and understand there politics more. As for the egg on The Sulaco. Its really hard to tell were the darn thing is.There is a brief pause in the action in the Aliens film after the dropship returns to the Sulaco. That small window of time could have been used by the queen to deposit an egg somewhere on the Sulaco and return to the dropship...just sayin :) Anyway, here's a screencap from The Directors cut of Alien 3.
