Surely I cannot be the only one that noticed the stark resemblance of the engineers with the bust of Alexander the Great... So it got me thinking....Imagine if some of the greatest heroes we know in history turned out to be engineers on earth.... This would be like Forrest Gump crossing path with some of the most important moments in history (not coincidentally with the engineers, of course) By the way, side note... why do the engineers look like old Greco-Roman busts.???

I think The look is meant to be misleading. People looking for everything to be more obvious will see the similarity to Greek mythology and this film is waist deep in mythology, but along side it science and philosophy and psychology, so there are alternative explanations for people to choose. It's like one of those 'story books' where you go to a different page depending on your choices, except the scenes are the same and its your interpretation that is the choice. Are they greek gods? Or are they lacking body hair, prominent nipples and skin pigment because someone has been messing with the DNA to get more efficient stronger workers, with less individuality, and no energy wasted growing things they don't need. Up to you to choose, but be aware that you are choosing. Don't assume there is no alternative. Some people thought the film was poorly written but obvious. They missed the whole point. It's flawed sure, but what you get out of it depends on how much thought you put into it. I don't think the next film will tie in historical figures, except to hint and tease us. Remember that old phrase Big minds talk about big ideas, normal minds talk about events, and small minds talk about people. This film is about big ideas. It had plenty of events, and it raised red herrings about various mythological characters, which got some people chasing down Sumerian history and bible references, but none of them really hold water. The answers aren't supernatural, nor as easy as being blindly following old stories from human mythology. I don't think you'll see Jesus, Alexander the Great or King David realised in the sequel, although there may a 'David and Goliath' visual joke put in there to tease us. [/my2cents]
Big minds talk about big ideas, normal minds talk about events, and small minds talk about people.
What he said. I am not sure how they plan to put the engineer in sequel but definitey they are to be viewed from ideas and not from face, culture stuff.
Uncertainty is the only certainty there is, and knowing how to live with insecurity is the only security.

Throw in D. Afonso Henriques with his 2 meter long sword and I'll give it a thought,

I always thought the design of the Engineers is supposed to evoke that Greco-Roman statues. The title is from a Greek mythology. But I think Weyland name his ship after a God without knowing its full implication, or completely denying it, forcing on himself this blind faith of Gods being benevolent giver of life. Like Shaw with her Christian belief. But curiously, the whole Christian movement has always been about moving away from the pagan pantheistic religions which include worship of Greek Gods. A lone Christian in a Pagan ship of fools.

The design of the engineers evoking the Olympian idea of beauty and perfection IS intentional. This visage that was used in ancient Greece and then Rome when creating sculptures of their gods, echoes that used by the ancient egyptians for their gods, and was continued by the renaissance artists, and the classic artists of today.

I always thought the design of the Engineers is supposed to evoke that Greco-Roman statues. The title is from a Greek mythology. But I think Weyland name his ship after a God without knowing its full implication, or completely denying it, It seems he was well aware, but he didn't expect history to repeat itself, and it was a touch of hubris. Like people who refer to their boat as Titanic. They don't expect to hit an iceberg, just because they picked that nickname. Like Shaw with her Christian belief. But curiously, the whole Christian movement has always been about moving away from the pagan pantheistic religions which include worship of Greek Gods. A lone Christian in a Pagan ship of fools. Shaw was not the lone Christian, Holloway was also Christian, he believed that there would be gods to meet, and he felt abandoned when they were not found alive, so his crucifix tattoo was not just for fashion. And Holloway, Weyland and Shaw were the biggest fools on the whole ship.

I'm not sure that I can endorse the term "fool" for Shaw or Weyland. They are tenacious; stubborn; determined. (Call Charlie a fool all you like.) I see shades of Weyland in Steve Jobs; and Shaw in Karen Armstrong. Shaw's beliefs are evolving and we have no idea exactly what meaning she attaches to the wearing of her cross, but I believe that David used it to lure her back to him.

Nobody is required to endorse my opinion, we're all free to disgree. I have no hesitation in calling Shaw and Weyland dangerous fools. Weyland may be a visionary in creating new technologies, but his judgement in non-technical choices is terrible. He has 100% faith in a theory put forward by Shaw, which has very little proof. Apart from her academic qualifications, certain things make us think Shaw is smart, like the opening scene which a lot of the audience assumes is Engineers seeing Earth. Worth mentioning here. We all saw that. Dr. Shaw Dr. Holloway did not. Try to imagine how your view of the movie would be different if it started with the cave discovery in Scotland. A bunch of cave paintings some with large figures and the same dots. Okay, that's pretty good indicator that something visited all these cultures as far back as 35,000 years ago. Where's the bit where she thinks it belongs in the book of Genesis? She imagined this bit herself and just ignores all those fossils of cavemen and our primate ancestors, and all the stuff showing that we evolved over billions of years. She chucks Darwin in the bin, as convenient, and clings to the bible as pleasing, ignoring the facts, and the science, because she chooses to believe something. Remember, at this stage she has no DNA match showing any link between us and UFOs, all she's got is proof that they visited ancient humans. Is she proven correct later? Actually no, although it's easy for her to believe that she is, by only seeing what she wants to see. 1. Breathable air inside the dome in LV 223... at least 4 scientists and a medic standing there, with air perfect for humans. Which one said "why is there air perfect for humans here? Are we not the first humans to come here?". Nobody said that. And after the attack by the Space Jockey which shows her that he can run around in this toxic air and is strong enough to rip open an airlock door. Remember that two minute thing is how long it takes to kill you, you would actually pass out in seconds and then die. 2. DNA match. This proves we came from them? No it proves that our DNA matches. She doesn't consider the possibility that what she's looking at is the DNA of 35,000 year old humans. If she submitted this theory for peer review it would be shredded for not concerning alternatives, but the only peers within a light year, are her boyfriend, and Milburn and Fifield who are at this stage trapped in the dome. Weyland trusts this woman completely despite her allergy to proper scientific methods. He is 100% convinced that he's literally meeting his maker when he meets the Space Jockey. He tells David "tell him who I am. Tell him why I'm here" and never thinks to say "ask him who he is, where he's from, what he is called". Kind of important to know how you're talking to when demanding immortaliy. But I guess he was in too much of a rush. This is why I call him foolish, and Shaw also. Dangerously foolish because they get other people killed through their poor judgement. As for Shaw's cross, she certainly has strong religious beliefs but they don't seem to be formal. Rather it's because her dad was a missionary preacher who told her about heaven, especially when her mum died when she was 6 or younger, and her dad gave her that cross before he died of Ebola. so she has deep emotional connection to the cross. She gives it up rather easily to David, but I suspose she has her mind on other things, like Holloway's fiery death. I'm not sure how you say David lured her with it. He took it from her and put it in a plastic container on a table in the medical bay. Obviously he takes it away again later, but that happens off screen, after he hits her with the sedative. It's odd that he decides to take it with him, and when he gets into his away suit, he puts it into the pouch, but even odder is that she expects him to have it, rather than it being part of the fiery wreck of the Prometheus. How does she know he has it? She doesn't look for it after she belts Frod and the other guy and makes a run for the med pod. She doesn't go to him to get the cross. She goes to the Space Jockey's pod for answers, and then later goes back to David because he says they can get off the planet on another ship. Only after she's next to him does she ask about the cross.
