Was Jones in hypersleep?

@hox...that cat in ALIENS wasn't our Jonesy, that was an imposter! :)

Spot on solution BigDave ;)

Was Jones in hypersleep?

On a large ship like the Nostromo you would think there would have been many kits, if their purpose had been traditional rat catcher moggies.

Hypothetically, I think little mechanical rat-zapping tech could have been an appropriate alternative for an old Bison class ship. (Remember Ridley's little flying mechanical repair "mice" from his Ridleygrams?) well something along those lines, but smaller. With Jonesy serving only as crew-comfort fur ball companion.

I have entertained the idea that he may have been artificial, perhaps that's why the Alien got annoyed and swiped his cat box aside? I prefer to think of him as real moggie, just feels more comforting, though probably more troublesome :)

Knowing kits, I'm pretty sure Jonesy would have been curled up, all cosy by Ripley's feet in her hypersleep chamber, until a dream of his full Nostromo cat bowl woke him up!

It's a Difficult Responsibility

With all that's been happening around our beautiful planet, I hope that all of our members are safe & well.

Wishing you all peace & happiness xx

Happy Holidays indeed!

Prometheus : Theodicy

Michelle,

I have been absent from the forum for a while. Many thanks for sharing your work. It comes from a passion for Prometheus & what it opened us up to. Given the troping & emptyness of most cinema in recent years, very few directors would have had the vision or bravery to go there.

Prometheus was the beginning of an odyssey, what a waste that it was not allowed to follow through. As an aficionado of the original ALIEN & Ridley’s work, in cinematic terms it was the most excited I had been for years. After Covenant that excitement was replaced to a certain extent by sadness & if only….

Anyway, I will certainly be setting aside some time to savour your reworking.

You vs Xenomorph clip

It does seem a kind of odd comment to make Dave. I could buy the Alien having a minor self repair ability, but to be totally crushed then regenerate is a bit of a reach.

Makes you wonder if at the back of his mind Ridley was thinking of a way for Walter & his regenerative capability to be utilised by David for his ultimate alien specimen?

Might not be as random as we think, after all Ash did tell the crew they couldn't kill it!

You vs Xenomorph clip

Hahaha you beat me to the punch Dave! I spent too long searching for the right pic! :)

You vs Xenomorph clip

Ultimate Alien deterrent...

You vs Xenomorph clip

Ps. I'm with MonsterZero rather like when dealing with The Thing, your best defence would be to freeze it, as there's probably no other way to contain it!

You vs Xenomorph clip

There was no easy way to dispose of Giger's Big Chap from ALIEN. If you shoot, cut, flame thrower it, you risk acid bleed breaching the hull. Plus, I'm sure it had an adverse resistance to most things, I doubt you could kill it! Plus, Ridley now hints at the Alien having regenerative properties, so...

Remember, it was still alive when the Narcissus's engine blew it out into space.

JC's Bugs were easily disposed of, huge mistake in my book! That's why I disregard them, they diminished the whole concept of what the Alien was. Ruined the whole mystery & terrifying, unknown entity factor.

Explain your Avatar

Hi dk & everyone on the Godzilla forum *waves* :)

My avatar is a painting by German artist, designer & filmmaker Till Nowak. It's called "Salad" & was made as a tribute to both H.R. Giger, and the vegetable portraits of Giuseppe Arcimboldo.

I love it because it's a very interesting & clever representation of the Alien. Giger were so impressed by it, it led to both friendship and multiple creative collaborations! In 2012 Tills work was presented alongside Gigers in Las Vegas, at the Giger "World of Art" Showcase.

My first avatar was Rick Deckard's gun, as my full username was The Lone Gunwoman, but I shortened it!

Then for a long time it was the close up of Jonesys' cute wee face as he watched Brett's demise at the hands of the Alien.

Arcturians

You're welcome Ingeniero :)

Perhaps the gardener/sacrificial/worship Engineers kept specimens of all of their creations in the silos & the LV-223 'fallen' Engineers turned those silos into hostile biological weaponry vessels.

Wonder if there were even giant Juggernauts which carried the silos & placed them in situ, as the base of the silo has legs?

Hah, that's a pretty cool idea Dave! Arcturians who can bewitch & enthrall other species, using a form of telepathic mind control.

Much easier than shape-shifting! ;)

Pure Genius: Remembering The Guinness Ads With Rutger Hauer

It's ages since I've watched Wanted: Dead or Alive setaverde, still, I remember all of the explosions & the amount of bullets Rutger fired off.

I only had it on video, but I got a free mini-poster of that gorgeous pic of Rutger posing with his gun over his shoulder!

Classic 1950s sci fi movie help

Sounds like Invasion of The Body Snatchers (1956 version) or maybe Invaders from Mars (1953)?

Pure Genius: Remembering The Guinness Ads With Rutger Hauer

I think these ads, along with Ridley Scott's Apple & Futureworld ads should be remastered & re-released as a compilation!

R.I.P. RUTGER HAUER

Thanks for your wonderful uniqueness Rutger!

We'll miss you X

That scene is just as brilliant today Dave. Rutger was mesmerising, he outshone Harrison Ford by miles!

David Did Not Create the Xenomorph

The ambiguous elements do serve a purpose.

For one thing, they allow us to selfishly tailor our own ideas, likes, preferences & wants into how we view many elements from both Prometheus & Covenant. Thereby making the things we don't particularly like about the prequels more malleable, palatable or acceptable for ourselves.

Also, it allows for a get-out-of-jail card if it appears the story has been backed into a corner! Not really a satisfactory situation, but there you have it.

They also create a sounding board for the franchise, allowing the studio to pick & choose, find out what works or doesn't, like an ever evolving risky experiment.

For everyone who dislikes Prometheus, there is someone who enjoys it, likewise with Covenant. The problem being that each sequel changes focus to a certain extent after a backlash from certain quarters of the fanbase. In a way we are all responsible for that!

At this point in time the story could still evolve in ways which would be pleasing for many of us. But who is listening & gauging reaction? With such a broad variety of opinion across the internet, who has the final say?

It's dangerous ground, very dangerous ground!

For those of us who stick with it, they have us dangling by a slender thread.

I hope Sir Ridders is allowed at least one more outing. This story must reach a conclusion.

Whatever happens in the future, the only thing I am certain of is that it will cause much shock, anger, frustration, controversy, speculation, admiration & downright pleasure.

Arcturians

Ah, I had forgotten about the male counterpart to Sil, Dave.

I like your idea of them needing human seed to produce the male, that would dovetail nicely & at least they would have some positive benefit from such relations, rather than merely being a species exploited purely for pleasure.

Arcturians

You're right about that similarity dk ;

Hah, how cool would it be to connect The Thing & the Alien by way of their origin.

Think of the Arcturians as the exploited pleasure model variant of The Thing! Lol

Arcturians

Ps Indeed hox, Ridley would tell you that MOEBIUS was very much an influence on Blade Runner, Prometheus & Covenant. Even his storyboard style & also his latest ad for Hennessy is packed with Moebius imagery.

Below are two threads you might want to check out, one by Ingeniero, second one posted by Big Dave.

The Seven Worlds - Directed by Ridley Scott

A Parting Gift

Arcturians

@hox Yes, that was a bit of a stretch by me & not a very satisfactory one.

Like many here I've wanted to find out exactly what connection this beastie has to the lifecycle. It appears to have some significance given that it is featured above some of the doorways in the Silo and the Juggernaut. I'd love to see a living version of it, but I doubt that it will ever be revisited! If Ridley had been allowed to follow through from Prometheus, then perhaps, but alas, I seriously doubt that we will ever see anything so novel, awe-inspiring & interesting again!

The murals are perhaps merely symbolic in that they depict the fate of the LV-223 Engineers/fallen angels/clones/Prometheus after they stole from their masters. Meaning that beaked species has no further significance. However much I wish it wasn't so!

Arcturians

Could the Mural creature be an Arcturian?

Just for you dk: Gigers Alien Monster VI

Arcturians

The Engineers, or those above them may well have created & adapted many non-human species.

I've always felt that the Urns in the unexplored LV-223 silos contained different Deacon-related variants & or specimens gathered from, completely different species throughout the Universe. Or in the case of LV-223 perhaps just hostile lifeforms, which could be used for destruction. Of course, that was after Prometheus, now I'm not so sure!

I think Jim Cameron may have been influenced by the Dan O'Bannon-Moebius Arcturian from The Long Tomorrow

After all, the Bishop knife trick was certainly a nice homage to the O'Bannon-Carpenter penned Dark Star.

Dark Star "The Knife Game"

What if the Arcturians are genderless shape-shifters, taking the form of anyone you want them to be? Sound too good to be true? Then it probably is, see below :)

Second Synthetic on the USCSS Prometheus Mission to LV-223?

I still think that David uploaded himself into Walter, rather than cutting off his hand etc. Mind you, if that were the case, why didn't the cuts on Walter's face self heal?

Sorry for going off topic, why do I even bother about it anymore?  :)

Second Synthetic on the USCSS Prometheus Mission to LV-223?

Another thing, why does Walter say "we are Walter" at the end of the Meet Walter viral?

After seeing how COVENANT ended, does it mean that David & Walter have always been assimilated?

Second Synthetic on the USCSS Prometheus Mission to LV-223?

I actually noticed the other similarly clad person from my first viewing of PROMETHEUS & have often wondered if it was another synthetic. As he appeared to have little significance regarding the theatrical release I let it go.

Ridley did state in an interview from the set that there could be another synthetic on board. Since then I've wondered if perhaps the other person was originally intended to feature more prominently, but changes during filming caused that character's role to become virtually insignificant, or perhaps relegated to the cutting room floor?

We may never know!

I wasn't aware of this at all I Raptus so thank you for pointing out the novel & the film.

I'll seek both out!

Who would you choose to breathe some fresh air into the "Alien" franchise?

I don't think it matters much who directs. The main problem up to now has been studio/producer interference, meddling with the script & forced changes.

Michael Fassbender Would Love to Return for a Covenant Sequel!

Good point ignorantGuy Now we just need to ask Ridley if he considers that canon in his Alien Universe! :)

Michael Fassbender Would Love to Return for a Covenant Sequel!

@ignorantGuy

It is the same old story, Ridley is the one who discussed the dangerous A.I. aspect in interviews. The irony being that in trying to get away from the over-cooked beast, he focused on a crazy A.I. which is also nothing new. David's evolution has been interesting nevertheless, though not to everyone's liking.

At the end of the day there is very little in Sci-fi which has not been seen before. Old themes & concepts are constantly being recycled & reinvented by script writers & directors.

Why would you create a synthetic who has the potential to go haywire in the way that David did? (It wasn't until after ALIEN that the ASIMOV protocols were put in place.) You would think that someone as clever & influential as Peter Weyland would have had more foresight. Apparently not!

Just to confuse matters, Walter apparently had 'upgrades', which had nothing to do with Weyland, but whoever took control of Weyland Corp after Weyland's death. Yet, Ash was not programmed with those protocols. It's rather messy as it stands.

Facehugger's DNA Transference

@setaverde

PROMETHEUS is filled with so many interesting elements. Ridley said that if you wanted to kill thousands, or millions of people all you need do is add some virus to the water supply.

It's a scary thought, all of those labs filled with every virus known to man. Experiments in Biological Warfare. The Plum Island Animal Disease Facility, for example!

Michael Fassbender Would Love to Return for a Covenant Sequel!

David is a warning about what could happen if an A.I is set free of restriction & human control. In PROMETHEUS, he was the flip-side of the Clone Engineers, who turned on their own masters. By COVENANT, the damage he sustained plus lack of maintenance has resulted in his maniacal behaviour.

That reminded me of Ash, when he attacked Ripley, hell bent on killing her, fellatio style, with the rolled up magazine. Both he & David are 'impotent', which seems to contribute to their treatment of the women who question their actions or motives. It provokes seemingly berserk behaviour!

The problem is that in COVENANT, on the one hand we have mad scientist David's over-the-top Peter O'toole-Lawrence impression, with it's seriousness, intellectual rumination, flute obsession & literary quotation, set against the Covenant crew as monster fodder, action-horror storyline. Those elements do not gel successfully. The more I watch COVENANT, it feels like two films spliced together.

Ridley Scott and Alien

Who here could have predicted the amount of hatred Ridley's return to the ALIEN Universe has generated?

That hatred not only directed at Prometheus & Covenant, but towards Ridley himself. It's heartbreaking!

Michael Fassbender Would Love to Return for a Covenant Sequel!

For those of us who appreciate the vision of H.R. Giger & ALIEN's Lovecraftian themes, COVENANT was a turnaround of sorts.

While it's another fine example of Ridley's visual skills & a showcase for Michael Fassbender's talent, it's backtracking from the story set up by PROMETHEUS, mish-mash of ideas, not-so-subtle Alien Universe tropes, alongside the pretty heavy handed expansion of David's character, left it muddled & for the most part confusing & unsatisfactory as a follow up.

Ridley had the right idea when he made PROMETHEUS. It shifted the emphasis towards something new, while  respecting & connecting to Lovecraftian themes, Dan O'Bannon's ideas & H.R. Giger's artwork. It was a beginning, which is why those elements were tempered, but could have developed & gone further towards the cosmic horror created in ALIEN with each sequel.

I feel it was brave, sophisticated & polished. Sadly, some of the backlash created by PROMETHEUS caused the studio & perhaps Ridley himself to get cold feet. That's why we ended up with COVENANT rather than the originally intended sequel.

FOX were afraid of pursuing the story Ridley intended. I doubt that Disney will feel any differently. The themes & story beats explored & opened up in ALIEN & PROMETHEUS are not for the average cinema goer.

Michael Fassbender Would Love to Return for a Covenant Sequel!

Well, we can probably forget about another sequel from Ridley, if Jim Cameron is flaunting his prequel idea in front of Disney, plus the way things are, the interwebz haters will be loudly on board with his idea!

RUMOR: James Cameron working on prequel to ALIENS?

Anyway, with is it 5 AVATAR sequels, or however many, in the works, plus a new Terminator, how in the hell would Jim Cameron have the time to work on an ALIENS prequel!?

RUMOR: James Cameron working on prequel to ALIENS?

Is it purely coincidental that JC is supposedly working on a new ALIEN movie, right at the time when reports of another prequel from Ridley, are being reported?

I had the exact same feeling when Covenant was in the works & Blomkamp started posting his ALIEN 5 concepts. Then Sigourney, JC- (it's gangbusters!) Michael Biehn etc came out of the woodwork to promote the idea.

I guess I'm just a conspiracy nut!

Michael Fassbender Would Love to Return for a Covenant Sequel!

Who knows, they might have David piloting a Juggernaut with colonist egg cargo? I pray to God that will never happen, but I thought they were planning on explaining who piloted the Juggernaut, though I would rather not know!
