Two days ago Godzilla: King of the Monsters director Michael Dougherty tweeted an image of the Oxygen Destroyer. The prop looked like the spitting image of the same device used in to kill the original Godzilla in Ishiro Honda's 1954 masterpiece. Since then fans have speculated whether or not the legendary weapon will be a mere Easter Egg or a notable plot device.

According to Harry Knowles at Ain't it Cool News, Dougherty has told him that the device will factor in to the movie's storyline.

"I asked Mike Dougherty if the OXYGEN DESTROYER was making a Cameo or was an actual PLOT DEVICE for his upcoming GODZILLA movie, which I still hope is GODZILLA: KING OF THE MONSTERS. And Mike gave me a firm answer of "YES"!"

If what Knowles says is true, could fans see the Oxygen Destroyer detonate once again? Would it be used against Godzilla or another beast? And who is in posession of it? MONARCH? Jonah Alan, teased in the viral MONARCH timeline? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below.

Oh boy. Can't wait to see what it will be used for.

Holy Crap it's back. The infamous weapon that killed the original and spawned his ultimate enemy is back. This just got serious.

I felt it was coming back once I saw the tweet. You just don't tease that in the Godzilla fandom.

"Would it be used against Godzilla or another beast?" Or be the creation of Destoroyah!

I have a feeling that Dr. Serizawa is going to introduce this weapon.

I don't know why it would be needed.. it just does not fit with the theme of this series of movies. The original had it.. because they needed to kill Godzilla... but this series is not the same as the original. I don't see how it would fit in to the story... imo.

Well the only way I see it is through a possible way to exit the film and create an introduction to GVKK. Im sure we will have to wait until the end of the movie to see a way it might be introduced to start a premise for GvKK? I mean the world would have to press their governments somehow to get rid of these monsters, and that's possibly how they introduce the Oxygen Destroyer. There are 4 monsters wrecking havoc in the world and their cities. Im sure there is room to introduce the idea or at least the blue prints for the OD.

similar to what they did in the prequels for star wars, they had that hologram of the deathstar briefly showing. maybe a fun way to introduce the OD in that way?

They could possibly have to use it on Ghidorah, and this in turn makes Destroyah. That would give GvK a big enemy to fight.

Wow that adds a huge plot point. So wee have 4 monsters and and the Oxygen Destroyer? Slow down legendary.

Not to be a killjoy, but what I read from the original article was the guy asked Dougherty if the Oxygen Destroyer was going to either make a cameo or be a major plot point, and all Dougherty said was "Yes." The way I read it, Dougherty only confirmed the OD will be featured in the film somehow, either as a cameo or a plot device (provided he wasn't just screwing with the guy).

^I've reached out to AICN for clarification on that as well. Interestingly all I got was the same vague "yes" as a reply. It's entirely possible I got it wrong, but to be fair Harry does emphasize "plot device". Still waiting for another reply.

Well it is still interesting to throw that in there. The OD is only referenced a couple times in the series after Gojira. Literally like 3 movies ever mention it and only does it ever become a plot point was Godzilla Vs. Destroyah. So if it does come back, it would be neat to see it used with modern special FX. Imagine it being used on King Ghidorah, with his skeleton showing and all through his skin.

But even tho I doubt Destroyah would ever come into this series of monsterverse, I doubt king kong could seriously stand up to a kaiju like that. that thing took on Godzilla when he was at one of his most powerful forms. king kong had the strange power-up from the lighting, and still had a tough time!!! Im sure we are all agree that king kong wouldn't stand a chance against Destroyah. plus its cheaper for Legendary to make there own MUTO.

I'm still wondering about the monster that Goodman's character refers to regarding the attack on the USS Lawton.. it predates Godzilla's awakening.. and Godzilla avoided the ships in Edward's film.. some my question is this.. are they saving Ghidorah for a skull island battle which will involve G and KK (the last cave painting suggests that this may be the case) and.. since Ghidorah is frozen in ice.. currently.. will there be another Kaiju in this next movie that we don't know about.. and will it be the one who attacked the Lawton? I mean.. having the other two.. Rodan and Mothra.. makes sense for King of the monsters.. but.. I'm betting that Legendary is gonna introduce a new Kaiju in the second film.. Goodman's monster. and the after credits scene (you know they'll have one).. will reveal Ghidorah in the ice.. and the ice is melting and cracking and we see movement. <theory only

well.. how about it?

The King of the Monsters

Jordan Vogt-Roberts revealed in the audio commentary for Kong: Skull Island that it was actually Godzilla that sank the Lawton. It was going to be explicitly stated in the movie, but Vogt-Roberts thought it was "too on the nose" and wanted audiences to figure it out for themselves.

Also, there's no chance that King Ghidorah isn't appearing in a major role in Godzilla: King of the Monsters. He's already been teased and hyped up for the film, and the official synopsis even says he will be fighting Godzilla in the film.

Not to mention that the DVD extras for Godzilla (2014) already had Vivienne Graham telling us that Godzilla was responsible for attacks on ships in the 1940s.

Godzilla wasn't solely awakened in 1954, that's just one of the times that humans were explicitly responsible.

On that note, you guys think the Oxygen Destroyer could've been drawn up during the Pan-Pacific Proving Grounds as a potential alternative to the nuclear detonations that General MacArthur had in mind?

riggzamortis86

MemberTitanosaurusAug-18-2017 11:47 AM

^I think it definitely has been option. But I bet that General MacArthur knew that the OD would be way more destructive than the nuclear option.

In 1954 movie Gojira, Dr. Serizawa mentioned that the Oxygen Destroyer was much more powerful that the A-Bomb. That is why he didn't want to reveal it to the world. It was so powerful that it killed Godzilla! So keeping in mind what the OD can do, Im sure it may have been an option in 1954 in this monsterverse, but thought it might be to destructive by Monarch and MacArthur.

The oxygen destroyer is one of the main problems I have had with the Godzilla franchise in the past. I don't believe it could harm Godzilla. I hope they hit the monsters with the oxygen destroyer and megaton nukes and everything fails to harm the titans, they survive without a scratch. A great part of the Godzilla formula is watching fake and real weapons proven futile against him as he destroys buildings. I have written off any Godzilla Ghidorah and Rodan past deaths or wounds in my book and I hope the oxygen destroyer doesn't do **** but make Destroyah for Godzilla and King Kong to team up and fight. Seeing those two Kaiju kings kill Destroyah would be the best ending ever in 2020. Imagine Ghidorah down to battle Destroyah if in KOTM Ghidorah submitted to Godzilla to later return to help Godzilla and King Kong's team and kick Destroyah's ass!

Tiamatzilla,
Sounds like you completely missed the narrative point of the oxygen destroyer.

Now that the second trailer is out, a part of it is the senate meeting deciding how to deal with the monster. It seems like they could decide they are to dangerous and come up with the oxygen destroyer to eliminate them. I don't really see it fitting into this movie too much, seems like the plan is to wake up Rodan, Mothra, and ofc Godzilla then have them fight Ghidorah, but an end credit scene is already confirmed and could very likely tease it for next movie; giving it only an ending cameo but still having it be a plot device for this movie (hence the short yes reply - it's vague but not a lie)
