Before closing up their panel at this years San Diego Comic Con Legendary Pictures unveiled a mystery teaser trailer which, while initially looked like Jurassic World footage, but turned out to be their next monster (sorry, again) project  -Skull Island. The movie which will feature the enormous ape King Kong and a whole plethora of oversized presumed-extinct goliaths will hit screens November 4th, 2016. The movie is rumored to be directed by Guillermo Del Toro, and is reportedly not related to Peter Jackson's 2005 King Kong reboot. Of course with Legendary deveoping this monstrosity of a movie, a possible monster mash up in the future seems possible if not likely...

Well this is obviously amazing news. Especially of Del Toro is on Kong, which wouldn't surprise me.

However, this brings up something that's always bothered me about Kong vs Godzilla; the size discrepancies. Correct me if I'm wrong, but weren't Kong and Godzilla very similar in height on their fight? Yet in the original and newer film, Kong is about as big as a two story house, or as big as a T-Rex. So how did he suddenly get as big as Godzilla? Or did Godzilla suddenly shrink?

Godzilla is huge in the 2014 film. So are they going to make Kong that big too? If not, are they going to keep each monster at their respective sizes and have them fight that way? That would be lame, as Godzilla would easily murder Kong.

I understand I'm presuming they're even going to make a Kong vs Godzilla film. Still, it's something that's always bothered me so I figured I'd bring it up. I'd like to hear other peoples thoughts on this subject.

I always took it as the Kong in KK vs Godzilla was NOT the monster from the 1933 film, but instead a very similar but larger creature that's given the same name.

That's too bad. I was hoping they were going to keep it in the same universe as Peter Jackson's Kong, even if he wasn't directing.

I'm willing to be real money that GDT will have NOTHING to do with the direction of this film. Pacific Rim 2 is scheduled for a 2017 release, and Skull Island will be 2016.  Soooo, if he's directing PR2, there won't be time to do Kong as well.

King Kong is back! Maybe we will see his son in the new movie. I can't wait.

I'm not too sure, King Kong is what 65-147 feet? Godzilla is 355 feet. I'm guessing Godzilla is 108-110 meters or so and King Kong is (Correct me if I'm wrong) 30-45 meters? (I'm just guessing so please correct me if I'm wrong) I'm not sure if there will be a G14 vs a King Kong movie unless they up his height which would be pretty cool I guess.

BioMaster45: Kong is about 25' tall. ;)  The best he could do is bite Godzilla's ankles.  1962 Kong vs Godzilla, yeah he was a fair bit taller than that.  As far as what he'll be in the future?  Who knows what Legendary is up to with Skull Island. Probably won't know until next CC.

Having said all of that, the truth of this is, while Godzilla is still happening with Legendary, it's ALSO still happening with WB, despite Legendary's current shackjob with Universal. Kong = Universal, Godzilla = WB.  While it's great we're seeing more big studio kaiju and kaiju-ish movies, a VS movie won't happen.  I think everyone needs to unkink their colons and deal with it.  We're more likely to get a Kong vs Pacific Rim, as PR went with Legendary to Universal.  That'll never happen either.

RagnarZilla - If they bumped up the scale for Godzilla in the reboot who's to say they cannot do it in "Skull Island" for King Kong? And who is to go against what us fans want? We would love a Godzilla vs Kong part 2 or reboot. Wishful thinking never hurt anybody.

Yeah, they could bump up the scale as Toho did 50+ years ago, but there are some problems with that.  One, if you re-read what I said, there'd be an IP/legal issue getting in the way.  I'd add to that by saying that this isn't the same as what Uni/Toho did - those were two movie studios from different countries which had no toes to step on. Uni and WB are both 'Murikan, and therefore are fighting for the same turf.  I don't see it happening.  Legally, the only way it could happen is if two things happen: 1) Godzilla is ripped out of the taloned fingers of WB and brought to Universal; and 2) if Toho thinks it would be a sane idea.  I don't see it as even a slim chance.

Secondly, I'm among those that DOESN'T want to see this happen because you'd have to Nolan-ize Kong, or totally camp-out Godzilla and make him a comicbook-y luchador again.  How will they make a 300+ foot tall ape even work?  Does anyone want to see Ken Watanabe, with a straight face say something as silly as, "Yes, we had distant simian ancestors that no one knew about that averaged 250' to 350' tall…"?  It'll delegitimize the whole endeavor.

I enjoyed Kong vs Godzilla when I was a child, when stuff like this didn't have to make sense.  I also appreciate that the new Godzilla has matured and become super-serious once more so that I can enjoy it as an adult.  However, I wouldn't appreciate an attempt at dark-campiness to make Kong a viable opponent in a future Godzilla film.  I like pizza and I like chocolate cake, but I don't want chocolate cake on my pizza.

Editing isn't working for me. I want to clarify one statement. That bit about "Nolan-izeing" Kong?  I'm actually for that (Jackson already DID), but upscaling him 10 to 12X to match Godzilla for size wouldn't keep things "grounded."  Unless everyone's ready to see Godzilla dancing, talking, and playing patty-cake with Jet Jagaarr again, in which case I'll leave you to it.

Your comments made me happy, RagnarZilla. Especially that Universal owns Kong and WB owns American rights to Godzilla. I didn't know that. Hopefully that makes it impossible to have a film in which they fight. The idea of a film in which they fight seems like a gimmicky hollywood cop-out and cash-in, which in my opinion would only hurt the Godzilla franchise. While I don't think G14 was perfect (I adored it!), I was glad Edwards approached it with what level of integrity he could muster. Having him fight Kong would throw that integrity out the window. It would become a lunatic fan driven film, rather than a Godzilla driven attempt at art.

I want a mature Kong that isn't contaminated by the prospect of needing to cash in on sequels.

I wept like I was a little girl again when King Kong died in Jackson's version! I'm guessing I'll have to weep again when Godzilla roasts him after a few seconds of roaring and chest-pounding. I'll just get my box of tissues on standby - along with some chocolates to make myself feel better after the slaughter. :(

MemberMothra LarvaeJul-31-2014 2:41 PMWhat if they make Kong the size of the big MUTO? Even the way the MUTO ran at the end resembled that of a gorilla. and it's not that extreme to make him that big. Whatever they do, just keep the monster movies comin.

All this talk about what WB is going to do with Godzilla...WB doesn't own Godzilla. Toho does...if they decide that Godzilla is better off in the Universal Stable, which it would, then they have the ultimate say on where Godzilla goes. They can tear up any contract that involes any character they own. Period. End of story. They have the final say...
