Despite his intentions to expand the mythology behind the Alien franchise veteran British director Sir Riley Scott's the two installments of his series of prequels to 1979's classic science fiction horror movie Alien have both been met with polarizing opinions from the critics, fans, and general audiences. Although fans have defended the grandiose themes behind the 2012's Prometheus and this summers Alien: Covenant, there has been much criticism towards the execution of both movies such as characterization, narrative structure the portrayal of the franchises titular antagonist, the Xenomorph. After an underwhelming performance at the worldwide box office and following in the wake of Disney's monumental purchasing of 20th Century Fox's movies studios and assets it was merely a matter of time before the future of the Alien franchise was once again brought into question.

According to a report from Screenrant the new executives in charge of 20th Century Fox have canceled Alien: Awakening, the planned sequel to Alien: Covenant that was to begin production in 2018. Screenrant is keen to note however that this rumor is sourced from a user of the forums over at Blu-Ray.com and has yet to be confirmed by either Disney or Fox. The user named HumanMedia also claims that production assets from the movies have recently been auctioned off. Conversely, React365 claims, yet citing no source, that in addition to Alien: Awakening's cancellation Disney and Fox are developing a reboot of the franchise.

We here at Scified.com are, for now, taking this rumor with a high dosage of salt. However, should news of Alien: Awakening's cancellation be proven true we are confident that Disney will not abandon the franchise purely because of its r-rated pedigree. Considering the studio giants investment in and development of new properties under the banners of Lucasfilm and Marvel Studios, we are confident that be it sooner, or later, Disney will take the Alien franchise's direction under serious consideration and not dilute it into a teenage orientated nasty - Fox did that with the AvP crossovers.

Thanks to Scifider DK for the heads up!

I certainly hope this isn't true.  We deserve at least one more movie to bridge the gap between Covenant and the original film.  Denying the existence of this potentially pivotal chapter would leave a gaping hole in the story of Alien that likely would never be filled if the film is canceled.  He story needs to be FINISHED, not rebooted.

Not completely surprised but with studios trying to establish franchises and universes I would expect something from the mouse kingdom in a few years.  However, it won't be Scott's movie and I'm not sure I'll watch.

I know a lot of people are gonna hate me for this....but I'm fine with this. I honestly think this series needs to be rebooted and the Xenomorph needs to be done right again. I want to see a tension filled film with the Alien once again being a horrifying creature lurking in the dark.

This report is just another confirmation that FOX cannot make up it's mind!!!  If we got to wait 5 years like we did with the Prometheus sequel, well... that would just suck.

Honestly, I just want to see the end of the prequels story!!  So what if it isn't a blockbuster!  FOX NEEDS TO LET RIDLEY DO WHAT HE WANTS!!!!  It is just one more movie!!!!  Covenant didn't bomb!  From the reports on this website, it sounded like FOX was all in for a sequel and in letting Ridley do what he wants.  Now, a month later, they can any sequel from ever happening!  This is all after they talked Ridley into changing Alien: Covenant into what it is!

I LOVED PROMETHEUS!!!! 9/10!!! For sure!!! It just has some flaws in it, yet I can see run time being an issue with those flaws.

It's hard being an Alien franchise fan it seems... Promises... Promises... Promises... seem to constantly get broken...

Still, I don't consider this news official.  Still, we better get that sequel sooner than 5 years, like Prometheus's sequel.

Fox just needs to FINISH THE PREQUELS and JUST BE DONE WITH IT.  Alien: Covenant isn't finished to me.  There needs to be at least one more movie.  Plus, since bonus footage for Alien: Covenant set up a sequel on top of the ending in A:C.  I guess FOX doesn't care about the fans.  It's the bottom line that matters.

This is just rude and frustrating.  Couldn't Fox just give a limited budget to Ridley?  The fans deserve one more!  And it better come in less than 5 frickin' years!

AH, I saw DK as bringing this up but it was Timmy the ultramorph who posted the thread and deserves credit!

I hated on the Disney deal at first but have embraced it. Other members have rightly pointed out the hemming and hawing from RS, FOX and writers- it gets confusing and ultimately frustrating as a fan. Here are my two cents:

Disney- allow and support RS to do ONE MORE movie tying the prequels to Alien. It would probably be very Engineer heavy. RS- focus solely on tying it up and allow for a 120 minute movie. Fans want closure. After that, by all means- explore the David/WY/Xeno arcs as you wish.

I cannot edit my post. One last thing Sir Ridley- It is OK to leave some ambiguity for us to think about.

MemberChestbursterDec-26-2017 10:58 PM

The React365 thing claims that will be an Alien remake instead of Awakening which will try to resolve the loose ends and retell the original story once again with new characters. Maybe it will have Weaver in it digitally made younger and killed off because they will want every single nostalgia dime.

I still wonder, but Alien Covenant was a remake in many ways, what are they thinking will work differently with a new remake?

dk

MemberTrilobiteDec-26-2017 11:14 PM

red0guy The React365 post looks sort of dubious. A re telling of Alien seems super weak and seems to underscore that someone may have meandered so much that the prequels cannot link up to Alien.

It seems present plot points from Prometheus and AC need to simply be abandoned to link up with Alien. After that- I have a whatever attitude.

I find myself getting amped up but need to remember there is no official word yet.

Good job Timmy the Ultramorph

Bloody hell, all this uncertainty around this great franchise is sad. Someone needs to step up and just own the franchise

I hate all the reboot talk. Just give us new stories with new characters, set in the same universe. There is so much left unexplored, we haven't even seen earth yet in the series. Don't throw away established events, just give us something new. After seeing Ridley finish his idea of course. You can't leave the fans hanging like that.

Interesting... I REEEAALLY want some sense of closure to Prometheus and Covenant from Ridley Scott and team. I don't want to see it just stop. Still,  I think I would prefer a reboot by Disney as opposed to nothing. This franchise has become one that I wouldn't mind seeing over and over and over. I mean, if a big Holywood studio makes an Alien movie, I will be there. I have loved EVERY one of the six films so far (no matter the glaring flaws!), so I will show up no matter what.

Even if Disney resurrects Blomkamp's Aliens sequel. In fact, Hybrid Network, (on YouTube) posted a video about Blomkamp posting more concept art on intsagram and twitter in the past few days! He captioned one saying that he is, just clearing out all of it. I tihnk he is secretly hoping that Disney to picks it up the same way Fox did.

We'll have to just wait and see what Disney does!

Yes, I am just reading on this now.  They have to adjust the budget and get a solid screenplay if this is to be resurrected in one shape or form.  RIP.

@cupernator, have you seen what Disney has down with The Last Jedi.  Them taking over Alien will be an abomination.  Keep it with Fox/Brandywine.

As disappointing as this all sounds, still not confirmed, it seems to be true. Ridley Scott is now working on  The Cartelhttp://collider.com/ridley-scott-christopher-plummer-all-the-money-in-the-world-interview/

No mention of ALIEN in the linked interview.

Disney certainly seems to be taking control of EVERYTHING, however, the faith of the ALIEN franchise could be determined how well The Predator does August 2018, considering that Disney owns everything associated with both creatures.

I highly doubt Disney will put Alien on ice, and will want to re-coup some of that $52.4B they spent to buy FOX.

Scott has also mentioned that he would rather not work with Disney, alluding to the fact that he's too edgy for Disney, and I couldn't disagree more. Disney is going to tap into the R market, especially with the upcoming Deadpool.

Scott + FOX tried and failed.

I think this simply mean the John LOgan David sequel has been cancelled. Studios know very well that every recent A.I. centered film has bombed. Universal just got one that didn't even got past the test screenings and was pulled from theaters. There is no way the studios can get a massive audience excited about a movie like that. I think this is godd news and hope other projects will be developed.

What movie was that or are they release it to blu-ray or streaming at least?

Whatever the case might be I wouldn't be sad if this is true. Scott only cares about the AI thing and I don't care about it.

“But at this point, does anyone but Ridley Scott even want another Alien film?”

Not if it will be about David, erase that if so.

I agree with JurassicNight about this.

“FOX NEEDS TO LET RIDLEY DO WHAT HE WANTS!!!!“ - I Moon Girl

I disagree with this, if Scott gets to do what he wants then we will get another boring David movie, I don't want to support that because it is boring.

“I guess FOX doesn't care about the fans.”

The same could be said about Scott since he wants to push his David thing despite the fact that many people are against it. I can't give you a number but search the net to see what some people say about Alien Covenant.

I think that not everything needs to be spoon-fed, some ambiguity is fine.

Colonialsoldier: Yeah they messed up Luke in that movie, **** that ****.

Ridley Scott need to finish the storyline of the prequel films first. After that Disney can make new Alien films and put it into another direction like they do with Star Wars. Keep the original franchise as canon, but the future films must have a completely new storyline with new ideas, but that is still connected with the original franchise, but never going back to the planets from all the previous films or mention those events.

With this Disney can make a whole fresh new start with Alien and leave the original franchise behind, but still connected to it.

Scott doesn't want to work with Disney because they will force him to collaborate with his peers. His focus on symbolism would have to be dialed back and that just won't fly with the penultimate creator

I think this rumor stems from prior to any Disney Take Over....

Prometheus started to answer the Questions to the Space Jockey, Derelict and Cargo but changed from Alien Engineers by keeping the focus on the broad Plot as far as Engineers/Space Jockey and Reasons for the Creation of Bio-Weapons to be used on Mankind, they toned down the Xenomorph feeling it did not need Spoon Feeding or seeing Xenomorphs and Eggs, and chose to introduce more of Weylands Personal Agenda and the Questions Dr Shaw wants with Davids Arc more.

Backlash because this was setting up Dr Shaw attempts to find Engineers for her answers, while David makes some Covenant with Shaw to then double cross her for his own Agenda, and explore the Engineers and Philosophy was deemed the wrong direction because it never would have had Xenomorphs and Spoon Fed the exact WHEN/HOW and WHY the Xenomorph and Eggs in Alien came to be.

But this U-Turn proved to be even more disappointing... so FOX are like OK, we started to show the Xenomorph origins, we toned town the Engineers and also Shaws Religious Quest for Answers, we tried to make it about Human Characters thrown into a unsuspecting Hell, showed Xenomorph Origins, tried something NEW to show what the Black Goo could do... and it well BOMBED a bit.

FOX had to ask... was showing the Xeno wrong? was disregarding and tone down the Engineers Wrong? was making David the Creator Wrong?   Was we Wrong in not following Blomkamps Alien  5?  should we had steered away from Alien and gone with Ridley Scotts Original Prometheus 2 plans?

So many Questions for FOX that they had no choice but to take a break, put things on HOLD and see what the Sales/Reaction to the DVD/Blu-ray Sales and Comments on Extras was to be... then assess where to go next.

Ultimately be the time DVD/Blu-ray sales and reception would come in, the Disney Take Over well FOX potential Sale would have came to light and been another reason to put things on ICE

I way more love prometheus and covenant than any of the other alien films, i love the direction its taken. Ridley schould get complete creative freedom from disney and fox.

MemberDeaconJan-04-2018 3:33 PM

Its hard to do though... especially if the route RS is taking is that if it was not for the events of Prometheus and Alien Covenant regarding David, and his experiments then there would be NO Derelict or Eggs in ALIEN

If RS wishes to go this route.... then..

We have to explain/show how Davids Creation get Evolved more, and end up on a Engineer Ship that just happens to have ended up on the Door Step to LV-223 which we can assume is NO-WHERE near Origae-6

So we have to see Xenomorphs, but we need to be careful how they are introduced, they cant be IGNORED and they cant be Overdone Popcorn Style.

We cant make this too much about DAVID but we cant brush his role under the Carpet.

We have to introduce the Engineers, but then does this open up other movies to explore them and in what context?   Far away from our System?  A different Time to the Alien Time-line?  Or bring them in close to the Alien Time-line and close to Earth, but then not contradict the events after ALIEN, unless RS had planned to Ignore ALIENS?

Just read Disney's projected films through 2020 and there was NO MENTION OF ALIEN.

BigDave

MemberDeaconMar-02-2018 3:19 PM

I think that does not mean we WONT see a Alien movie, i am not 100% sure we will see anything within the next few years...  I think a lot depends on how The Predator does, both Critically and Domestically $$$$

I still think the Alien and Predator Franchises give Disney something different than they currently have, especially if they cater the Franchises for a R/15 Audience.   I am concerned any move from Disney could come in the form of a PG-13 or even 12A type Cross-Over AKA  a AVP Reboot...

We cant give up just yet, it appears Sir Ridley Scott will be working with Disney on the Merlin Saga, this would allow him to show what credentials he can bring to a Disney movie, if RS makes good on this movie and he pleases Disney its a chance to PLUG a potential return to the ALIEN Franchise.

If the Merlin Movie Bombs... and Disney Feel for the Time/Budget that RS has not done well enough with either, then this could really but a ALIEN movie on the Back Burner.

I think the Defining Moment will be April 26th 2019 at the 40th Anniversary Alien Day  if by then we have NO News or positive potential information from Ridley Scott on the Project, then i think it could be a Long Long Wait before we see a Alien Movie.

IF at this moment Disney do have some idea/plans but are not in a direct rush, but those working at Disney DO have plans for another Alien movie, i feel it would be idea for them to AT VERY LEAST Market and Build Up HYPE by or on April 26th 2019

I certainly dont think the ideas DEAD as far as Ridley Scott, but even if Merlin is a Hit, if Disney then Pile up a lot of movies they want RS to make that are not ALIEN and its good business for RS, then i can see him making more movies for Disney... i cant see him saying "look i make one more movie for you, then i want to do my Alien"

If I was to mention the R rated movie Pulp Fiction, would Disney automatically spring to mind? For most people, I don’t think there would be any apparent connection. The point is that Pulp Fiction was produced by Miramax, after Miramax was taken over by Disney. In fact, quite a number of R rated movies, some very successful ones at that, were made by Miramax under Disney. Disney eventually sold off Miramax, but Miramax became The Weinstein Company.  Essentially what I am getting at, is that I think Fox movies will fill the void that Miramax left, and that Disney will have control of making R rated movies but not under the name Disney.

Another point here is that given the timing of events surrounding the take over of Fox Movies by Disney, I think there is going to be some time before some of the dust settles on a lot of issues we have seen in the media. As for how all of this will impact on the Alien franchise for definite is anyone’s guess at present, but I do feel hopeful that any future Alien movies will not automatically be watered down from an R rating. Given the gap in the market that has been created by Miramax/Weinstein Company, I think Disney saw this unfolding and decided to act by acquiring Fox Movies.  Just thought I’d add my two cents.

BigDave

MemberDeaconMar-05-2018 3:18 AM

Totally Agree...

I mentioned the same thing before... even if Disney do-not directly make/produce a Alien movie.... they could still release one under the FOX Brand... or even Outsource the Franchise to another company, where Disney will be listed as part of the Producers, but a different company would be commissioned to actually work on the Project.

Or indeed we cant rule out Disney Selling off some of the Franchises it has acquired.   I think Disney would be wise not to, because Alien and Predator give them another different string to their bow.

I dont think being associated  with a R/15 Rated Franchise would damage Disneys Reputation?

They could easily make a movie that sits at a Gore/Foul Language Setting of say Aliens, Alien 3 and Alien R (or AVP) kind of flick and in todays market pass it for a Cert 15 or USA equivalent.

They only need to cut any Nudity, and over the top Foul Language and these would not impact a ALIEN movie... and they would not tarnish the Reputation of Disney.
