It appears Legendary have heard our calls to continue the Monsterverse! The Hollywood Reporter has just exclusively learned that Legendary executives are quietly entering talks with Adam Wingard (director of Godzilla vs. Kong) to direct the next Monsterverse film!

According to the report, a title floating around inside Legendary right now is Son of Kong, suggesting the obvious - an offspring of Kong... but for that to happen there would need to be a female Kong found in the Hollow Earth.

Of course it's still VERY early to say what for sure will be the next chapter for the Monsterverse, but hearing that talks have already begun internally is very exciting!

It appears they are! :) A lot sooner than expected! Time will tell however if they secure rights to new Toho monsters though... and reason they might be floating the idea of Son of Kong right now is due to the fact they haven't resecured rights to Godzilla yet. Honestly I'm not a huge fan of the next movie being about Kong's son... I can see that fizzling the hype out a little. In order to top GvK they would need to bring in some new players.

Yeah, I don’t really want a baby Kong

A Kong movie is the smart, safe and obvious choice. Both of Legendary's movies with Kong have preformed better than the solo Godzilla movies and from a critical standpoint, Hollywood just seems to handle Kong better. I think diving in with a follow-up to Kong's adventures in the Hollow Earth is very wise if that's the path they choose.

But if Wingard returns I would hope he omits his, "politics are out the window," mantra. He doesn't need to necessarily inject government politics, but any would do: Socio-politics, scientific-politics, eco-politics--The list goes on. He's orchestrated the structure of a giant monster movie, now do something relevant with it.

I agree with you Gman, cool for a movie for kong in the next sequell. Godzilla vs Kong was like a movie about kong, well yeah Kong needs more movies and stuff u said Gman.

SasquaDash

MemberAnguirusApr-28-2021 7:48 AM

I think it would be really cool to see Kong interact with more of his kind. Considering the fact that Kong has been alone for most of his life, it would be interesting to see how he reacts to the social structure of his species.

I'd like to see him return for another Kong movie in the future, I enjoyed the Human elements he added to Kong. And who knows, maybe we could even get Micheal Dougherty back for another Godzilla movie!

After watching GVK, I now really like MonsterVerse Kong but I hope they'll bring back Godzilla, Mothra, and Rodan. I especially want a Mothra standalone movie!

If Legendary can get their hands on classic Toho monsters, that'd be awesome. DaM with the MV's original kaiju would be cool too.

YeOldFossil

MemberBaragonApr-28-2021 1:55 PM

Would rather they use another director. Maybe get the guy who directed Kong:Skull Island. I don’t like how Adam made Kong need help in every fight in GvK. Apparently Kong needs backup or he dies. Want someone that will actually make Kong look like he can handle himself just fine without help in a fight. No human interference in the fights.

sorry I forgot some of those its been since 2014 which is the last time I watched a Showa and Heisei movie. I never reached the Millennium series and never saw Gamera or King Kong Escapes

YeOldFossil

MemberBaragonApr-29-2021 6:58 AM

Yes they do occasionally need help. But the thing about Kong is that he never needed help before. He always managed to survive alone and even took title as king and alpha of Skull island. But fair, maybe a little assistance every now and then, but it was literally every fight scene Kong needed to be saved. Even against the warbats which he should have been able to handle alone without the help. Kong looked like he couldn’t win a single fight without someone saving him. It’s Kong Kong, put some respect on his name. They couldn’t just make him Look like he was a powerhouse for one moment in the movie or actually do any real serious damage to Godzilla. Movie is called GvK and Kong didn’t come close to even looking like he was actually going to win even with the axe. It’s pretty clear Adam is more of a Godzilla fan so just give him a Godzilla movie and Give Kong to someone that actually wants to make Kong look like a total badass king that thrived against the odds despite being alone for his whole life surrounded by monsters that want to kill you. Get the guy who directed Skull island or find someone else.

YeOldFossil

MemberBaragonApr-29-2021 7:15 AM

And quite Frankly, he is **** at storytelling. 5 hours total filmed and he couldn’t even try to include more story. Why was Ren even there? Why does Josh exist? Why not include the scenes where the guy finds his brother’s broken ship? Could have been a good moment that brought team Kong together where Jia and the women help home cope. Where are they getting skull crawlers? Also, show don’t tell. Show me Kong saving Jia, show me Godzilla looking physically tired and injured to 50% like Adam said in his interview. Bleeding wounds from the axe and whatnot. He really didn’t deliver anything impressive but the CGI was good and the fight ok. Just didn’t deliver much of anything else and cut way too much.

G. H. (Gman)

AdminGodzillaApr-29-2021 8:52 AM

This where I usually remind people that most early cuts for almost every film is 5 hours or more and has to be whittled down.

But YeOldFossil makes excellent criticisms otherwise. All very valid points.

KaijuBuildz

MemberTitanosaurusApr-29-2021 9:36 AM

Thank you!! I'm so happy someone else pointed it out. Though I do believe a lot of additional scenes for Ren's character specifically were cut, this movie leaves A LOT to be desired when it came to the human story.

Another example for me was the villain's daughter character who entered the movie 1/3 of the way in, did literally nothing to the point of me forgetting she was there until she betrayed after which she was killed pretty much immediately. Btw, am I the only one who wondered how their plan to collect the energy source for MechGodzilla didn't account for the 100-meter tall ape?

Also maybe it's because I'm biased to King of the Monsters but how can critics go from "To much humans, not enough Godzilla" with Godzilla 2014 to "To much monsters, not enough human" with KotM and then to "Just brainless fun, who cares about the human story anyway"? I know that this is very much simplifying it, but I genuinely find it weird how these general opinions can change and interdict so much, especially since (in my opinion) the Characters in KotM were better than GvK. Then again, maybe I'm just not seeing something here that others are, I really don't know anymore?

G. H. (Gman)

AdminGodzillaApr-29-2021 9:56 AM

KaijuBuildz,
I think part of it is, "right place, right time." I'd argue under normal cir***stances, GvK wouldn't have done nearly as well or have been reviewed nearly as positively. But the fact is it's the first major release since Wonder Woman 1984 disappointed in December and I believe there's reason for its success.

As much as I don't like it, it's not a message movie. It's not self-important. And it doesn't remind anyone of current events. People are tired. They don't want a self-important, brainy, sci-fi espionage flick like Tenet from last summer. (Which is a great movie--Don't get me wrong.) They don't even want to be reminded they need "hope" from Wonder Woman 1984--That implies there's something wrong. Godzilla vs. Kong offered unadulterated, mindless, cheap escapism that took them as far away from the covid-era existence as possible. It was a complete exit from reality that offered audiences something to cheer for and it was enough to reinvigorate life in theaters.

This is probably the only instance I, or others, will critique a movie based on the point of time it's released. However, the extremity of the last year seems to necessitate and even justify it.

I agree with you and YeOldFossil, completely. The movie is a two hour lapse in logic, character work and nuance. I'm very curious as to how this movie will age. Will it be remembered for how it resuscitated cinemas? Or will it retroactively be seen as a mess we all gave a free pass due to the times? Or both? Personally, I think too many are still on their honeymoon phase with the movie to know for sure.

KaijuBuildz

MemberTitanosaurusApr-29-2021 10:30 AM

@G. H. (Gman) Yeah, now that you've pointed that out it does make a lot more sense. To loosely use an old meme "Maybe it's not the movie the world deserved, but the one it needed?".

Thinking about it, this could also explain why certain parts of the movie felt like a puzzle with certain parts missing. Maybe the movie was heavily re-edited to better fit this more casual mindless fun theme instead of the more thought-out plot of the previous movies. Maybe that's even why the trailer took so long to come out? I'm going down a whole new rabbit hole of conspiracy theories, but I'll let you decide.

It also does explain a lot why I and some others didn't like this movie as many others seem to do. For me personally, I really enjoy those more brainy and meaningful elements in movies, especially with Godzilla/Kaiju movies. It's the same reason why I stopped with the Fast and Furious franchise, just stuff happens for reasons unknown, physics just doesn't matter until they do? Godzilla movies especially have always had that more meaningful perspective on it, heck without it the big G wouldn't even exist. Then again, Godzilla has always changed depending on the times, going from an effect of war to a superhero to a force of nature to the embodiment of dying soldiers. It's weirdly always been part of the character.

As you mentioned, I'm really interested to see how in 5 years or so people will look back on this movie and if it will hold up as well as it does now. If anything I hope people will at least start to notice some of the flaws the movie has on rewatch. I hope if the Monsterverse continues, they do lean back to the more plot-driven stories of the previous movies, but only time will tell I guess.

KaijuBuildz,
You hit on something that really does worry me. (And unfortunately I won't elaborate on it in great depth until a certain magazine issue.) GvK seems to set up an alarming precedent. Its success could potentially point to more movies like this in the genre. (Hence Wingard being considered for the next one.) It concerns me because, like you, I prefer there to be more meaning to my melee.

I will say, watching Singular Point was an exhaustive sigh of relief following GvK. If you want a reminder that the genre can be more than a generic slug fest, I think you'll be pleasantly surprised. As for the Monsterverse, personally, and to quote critic Chris Stewardson, I'm pretty checked out.

YeOldFossil

MemberBaragonApr-30-2021 6:35 AM

Yep, I’m all for monsters fighting, but if you are going to include people with a story, then tell the story. Doesn’t need to have a deep meaning or anything like the first Godzilla movie, but it could at least have a coherent story. Something to make me think and wonder about rather than fill in the gaps.

KaijuBuildz

MemberTitanosaurusApr-30-2021 10:55 AM

Ngl, I am very worried about that as well. I fear if this continues, we might be approaching a 2nd Showa era. Then again the Showa era is far from the worst and introduced many iconic Kaiju, but even the biggest Godzilla fans have to admit that that era was a bit of a low point for the franchise. If the Monsterverse does go in this direction, I might need to check out as well, let's it doesn't come to THAT point.

G. H. (Gman)

AdminGodzillaMay-01-2021 11:28 PM

KaijuBuildz,
I think the Showa era is without question the best of the series and even at its lowest showcased filmmakers using their talent and resourcefulness to make the stories work. I think the lowest point in the series is the 90s films Heisei series--Where the ideas were wonderful, but the execution included too many characters doing too little and filling in gaps for the monster fights. (Sound familiar?) Sure they tried to be meaningful, unlike GvK, but they were too muddled to be great. I think the Monsterverse already became like that with King of the Monsters and sunk even lower with Godzilla vs. Kong.

Xenotaris

MemberGiganMay-02-2021 3:21 PM

I remember the Showa since I at least watched most of the earlier films more than once

YeOldFossil

MemberBaragonMay-03-2021 7:49 AM

Harassing GvK? It’s honest criticism. GvK had so much potential and it was all wasted. The fights are the only thing keeping it afloat.I see so many people going GvK was the best monsterverse movie and demanding Adam come back for Kong. No. I don’t want him to direct a Kong movie where he will have Kong get his ass whooped every fight and need people to save him so he can have a chance to win and cut all the important story scenes and character moments. That not the Quality a Kong movie should be held too.
