According to director Juan Antonio Bayona, Jurassic World 2 will act as more of a Jurassic Park 5 than specifically a Jurassic World sequel. Speaking to Cinemablend, Bayona discussed the direction he and producers Colin Trevorrow and Steven Spielberg are taking with the highly anticipated sequel. When asked how Jurassic World 2 would reference the original trilogy of Jurassic Park films, Bayona was quick to acknowledge that Jurassic World 2 will connect more closely to Jurassic Park than the first film did.
It's a very good question, and what we're doing is a sequel to Jurassic World, but it's definitely the fifth chapter of a longer saga. It's very interesting. It's always tricky, but you need to find a balance in what people expect to find, and the new stuff you're bringing to the story. And I think the story is looking for a connection between Jurassic World and Jurassic Park-- more than what Jurassic World did.
Jurassic World definitely made numerous, subtle references to the original Jurassic Park as well as its sequel, The Lost World, however many fans were hoping for more direct links and character references. The closest character mentions we received were of John Hammond and Ian Malcolm's book. Beyond that, the film was very much a stand-alone adventure inspired by pre-existing mythology - the island, the original visitor centre, the T-Rex, etc. How will Jurassic World 2 link more closely to the original Jurassic Park trilogy?
Since all current evidence points to Jurassic World 2 taking place predominantly on the mainland, moving away from the Islands, we can assume Jurassic World 2 will echo The Lost World more closely, similar to the way Jurassic World echoed the first Jurassic Park. This would include likely Dinosaurs rampaging through cities, or finally an in-city Dinosaur zoo, in which activists break the Dinosaurs free. (Speculating of course)
When asked how Jurassic World 2's plot would differ, Bayona also elaborated, teasing that they are taking the story in a completely new and unexpected direction. If this is true, are we to assume our current theories are wrong? Or is Bayona merely attempting to maintain secrecy and wonder? Here's what he had to say:
Sure. I think what this film does is it's the second chapter of the story that started in Jurassic World, and it's open to a third chapter too. It's very interesting in the way that we're approaching the story, and where we are leading the story. We're leading the story to a place that the audience is not expecting, and that's always exciting when you do a sequel.
