Godzilla stomped his way into cinemas this weekend, and in his wake, has left a a BIG impact on movie goers. With majority of online reviews praising Gareth Edwards on his Monster reboot, Godzilla has generated a monstrous amount of positive hype by both a clever marketing campaign and word of mouth.

On Thursday, Godzilla's North American debut, the King of the Monsters raked in a whopping $9.3 million, with screenings beginning at 7pm at participating theaters across the nation; making it one of the biggest non-sequel releases for a Thursday night; beating The Amazing Spider-Man 2's Thursday night debut, which only raked in $8.4 million.

By yesterday, tallying up Godzilla's domestic $38.5 million with foreign sales ($43 million), Godzilla has become 2014's biggest opening title so far, with a grand total of $81.5 million by the end of Friday night. With two more days plus Monday's holiday, Godzilla is expected to break $100 million by the weekend's end.

Keeping in mind, the film hasn't even been released in Chinese and Japanese theaters yet, the film will continue to rake in money well into late July, early August!

With an average rating so far of 4.6/5, based on over 60 user reviews here on Scified, paired with equally positive reviews from other media outlets and print, Godzilla is proving to be one of, if not, this year's BIGGEST blockbuster! A well-deserved success for the King of the Monsters and its passionate director, Gareth Edwards; who has proven that the Godzilla can be taken seriously and does still have a ton of potential in the modern world.

So freaking happy that this movie was great and is making a lot of money. This is the Godzilla movie that we've all been waiting to see. I just really hope that will start an amazing franchise for this new, awesome, fun version of the big G :D

Something Real

MemberGodzillaMay-17-2014 11:08 PMThat's utterly fantastic news! I knew Edwards' Godzilla would be a massive success! :)

Good news!
When the receipts are so high, the chances of seeing a sequel are very high.
The success of this film depends largely on the intelligent way in which Godzilla was conceived. Godzilla is not bad, nor good nor even chaos, it is simply the personification of nature, infitivamente powerful and destructive. Heedless of man, his intervention aims to put affixed to the imbalance created by man. Truly an epic film, that reminds us how we can become small and helpless against the power of nature!

Actually, the latest is dropping off:

http://forums.boxoffice.com/index.php?/topic/14872-saturday-s-godzilla-323m-rth-95m-weekend-nikki/page-119

Don't know if it will hold up (those numbers) time will tell, but, projected in the 90 million range.

I believe, the mixed reaction the movie is getting is hurting the movie. There were a lot of disappointed comments mixed with raving comments in theaters and in youtube, and in various message forums.

I think the movie will make enough money worldwide to warrent a sequel, but I do think a drop off is coming. Lets all be honest with ourselves...the movie is not good enough to have sustained box office. Gareth took a gamble with his approach, and while some like the jaws-esque style, it seems to really be hurting the film with many viewers, me included. I mean, think about it...there was so little Godzilla in the film, that if you would have shown as much of the action in the trailer as does a typical movie of this type, you would have seen most of the Godzilla action. Roll that around in your head a little bit and tell me that that's a good thing.

On the bright side, clearly we can see that the public loves Godzilla. They are always willing to give the big guy a shot. If this movie had double the Godzilla, even with some of it's other flaws, it would most certainly have sustained success. But even based on what has already happened with this film, I think we are going to get a sequel and it will fix the mistakes of this movie.

Someone pointed something out to me today, something Gareth Edward's said, and it really bothered me.

I don't usually get bothered like this, but, it did bother me.

Its in the Toronto Sun:

http://www.torontosun.com/2014/05/16/godzilla-director-gareth-edwards-on-delaying-films-big-reveal

“I feel that people have waited 15 years,” he says, referring to Roland Emmerich’s 1998 version (Edwards’ calculation falls one year short). “They can wait another 30 or 45 or 50 minutes. You know what I mean?”

That statement among a few others bothered me. Yes, it was a long wait. But also, there was nothing but tease after tease for 5 years or so. Comic Con, then somethign else, then this, then that. Change of this, change of that, it looked like there might not be a movie at one point.

What also bothered me, was that the scene was a cutaway. That scene needed a Godzilla rampage going ballistic on the MUTO.

Does he really think people waited for 15 years to get a front shot and a roar coupled with a cutaway?

It might work for a shark terrorizing a beach, but this is Godzilla and a lot of people waited not to be further teased. I believe, this hurt the movie from being more widely accepted.

Reggie1138

MemberMothra LarvaeMay-18-2014 8:42 AMI agree totally for all the waiting a teasing they did it really became excessive and frustrating. I could see and hear people especially small kids groaning throughout the theater.

thepike-You seem to be contradicting yourself. You said this film will not have a sustained box office based on your personal dislike of the film. That is hardly objective in my view. Likewise the people you cite who dislike this film is really your personal view and can't be quantified. And if there won't be a sustained box office in your view, how do you think the movie wll get a sequel. Big contradiction there.

tailsman-And how many "I-hate-Godzilla-2014" post has this been from you? You seem to have appointed yourself as the Godzilla 2014 hater on this forum. You are entitled to your view, but your dislike of the 2014 movie seem to have clouded your judgment. You claim this movie is not widely accepted by the audience, yet this movie has managed to score 72% on rotten tomatoes and 4.6 on scified. You seem to be in the minority, not the majority.

A couple of spoiler-ish comments if you haven't seen it yet.

First off, I'm thrilled this movie is doing as well as it is, and I do hope there will be a sequel or sequels. I loved seeing Godzilla as Godzilla. Love the design, etc. I had NO problem with waiting 45 minutes to see him. The movie moved along fine for me. It's an incredible build up to an equally incredible reveal. My issue was cut away after cut away after waiting for the reveal. That is what was frustrating to me. The airport scene easily could have been a 5-minute fight with the MUTO flying away and I would have been happy with that. There's my payoff on that scene. Then you have the "Let them fight" buildup and what happens again? I think there was another quick cut at the end also. People love your character. They're going to your movie because they want to see your character. I don't know how many minutes Godzilla is actually in this two hour movie, but I can assure you it wasn't enough for me and I'm sure most, if not all of you would like to have seen more of him. They got a lot right in this movie, but I think they left potentially another $10-15 mil on the table by not having more of him in it.

Bring on the sequels, but please Gareth, no more teases, MORE Godzilla!

While I may have been disapointed with the movie, I must admit;that shot with Godzilla roaring defiantly in the darkness as held Mutos head was truly awe-inspiring!

Godzillatheking123 ›,'

I waited a long time for Godzilla. I can't help it that is my opinion on the matter-

I mean, some people only have praise post after post about the movie, are you saying only those points of view should be tolerated?

This movie had serious problems and issues and Edwards gambled on something many people were hoping for, that many people want to see sequel. I find that questionable. I find that highly relevant to talk about.

talisman

MemberMothra LarvaeMay-18-2014 10:06 AMGodzillatheking123 ›, Just to add, a movie at this percentage on Rotten Tomatoes for example, in my view does not constitute success at all. This had the potential to be a very great movie. It was thrown away. For a movie to have taken this much time, this much thought, that many reworkings on the script, that much supposed attention to the human element, it screwed up big time. What you left out, was that there is wide agreement between critics who like the movie and disliked the movie that the story was weak and the human element was terrible. That fact alone contradicts Edwards idea that people would be held captivated by the human story. If anything, people wanted more Godzilla, less Ford and less of all the other side issues. People wanted Godzilla. Legendary underestimated the pulling power of watching Godzilla on screen. A better story, a 5 minute fight sequence at the airport and a slightly longer battle at the end, with Godzilla defeating the Muto's not from behind, but front on, would be far more rewarding. Not Pacific Rim action **** then, enough story, enough Godzilla enough of everything else.

MemberMothra LarvaeMay-18-2014 11:12 AM

Y'all need to shut up.  Everyone has there own opinions.  Yes there could've been more Godzilla screen time... but does that automatically make it a bad movie? I dare say no.  The idea behind this movie is what would it be like for us if this actually happened... and for all intents and purposes, this is spot on... is this movie your typical Hollywood blockbuster? No, but that's a good thing... Hollywood is becoming too predictable... you know what's going to happen, who's going to die, and the hero always conquers, so the intense scenes never are intense anymore cause we know the outcome... i applaud Edwards for this masterpiece... this movie is have me chills and that rarely happens to me anymore... too many of you wanted this to be a typical Hollywood blockbuster with crazy action and monster rampage... but there was definitely enough to say and this was an excellent character driven story...

I tell u, watch the movie again. My second viewing cleared almost any kind of hatred or annoyance I had when I first watched it. I will be praising this movie to everyone I know and I will encourage people to go watch it. I hope we have a sequel and maybe feature Angurius this time ;)

thepike

MemberMothra LarvaeMay-18-2014 1:19 PM

Godzillatheking123-I don't see at all how I contradict myself. First off, I liked the movie, but I far from loved it. And believe me, no one wanted to love it more than me. If I weren't a Godzilla freak, I probably wouldn't really have like it all that much. It MAY get a sequel because it had a huge opening, meaning people are interested, and it turned a profit. It doesn't need to have much else. And like I said, I hope it does.

In order for a movie to have SUSTAINED success, there needs to be word of mouth. The people who really want to see it (like me) hit the theaters in the first few days, sometimes more than once(as I'm reading on these boards) without knowing if the movie is going to be good or not. Then the word gets out. No matter what you think, word of mouth matters. Example: My neighbor asked me if it was good because he wants to bring his kid. I said it's fine so long as they don't mind waiting for an hour and a half before you see any real good Godzilla action. And please, let's not count the airport scene. It was a total let down. Anyway, I think he may have been scared off.

So saying that I think there will be a drop off because I don't like it is silly. It's not ME, it's a lot of people, or haven't you noticed? Just as I scared off my neighbor, so will others be scared off. You wanna know why? Because there isn't much GODZILLA in a movie called GODZILLA! Period. Once people figure that out, why do you think they are going to want to go see it? Perhaps Cranstons 25 minutes of fantastic overacting? Or maybe superbad guys steller performance of him trying to make phonecalls as he's traveling home? Or maybe Ken Wantanabes dictating plot points that he seems to know how(?), all the while as he's pretty much doing nothing else but walking around looking serious? And that's supposed to be important stuff. Thanks goodness we get some MUTO from time to time or else it would have been almost a complete snoozefest.

But there's probably some person at Legendary right now going," hmmmm, good openenig weekend, made some money, lots of interest, but reviews are mixed...not enough Godzilla. I bet if we put more Godzilla in the sequel, we would make a boat load of money."

Listen close....you can hear him......

And Talisman, I couldn't agree with you more.

MemberMothra LarvaeMay-18-2014 1:29 PM

KenG2K- Y'all need to shut up?  Since you are getting personal, let me just point out one thing about what you said....

"The idea behind this movie is what would it be like for us if this actually happened... and for all intents and purposes, this is spot on"

Really? Spot on? I this were based on reality, instead of dropping people on the monsters from high altitude, they would have dropped bombs. Just like Cloverfield. Did I miss them trying?

Godzillatheking123- Go to the discussion threads and check out what EVAN123 posted.

If you haven't yet, here's the gist...based on the OPENING WEEKEND, Gareth Edwards is already talking about a sequel.

You said "And if there won't be a sustained box office in your view, how do you think the movie wll get a sequel. Big contradiction there."

While it's not confirmation, goes right along with what I was saying.

You're welcome.

Well, amidst all these negative comments, I'll admit I was kind of dissapointed the first time I watched it because I was expecting all kinds of things, but got something different. But then the second time I enjoyed it so much more. There were things wrong with it, but not enough for me to not enjoy it. (They could have given us just a little bit more at the airport though)

Let's face it, the only thing that matters is how much you enjoyed it, so there's no need for arguments on here. We all have our opinions and we should respect them.

*Update* I've already read from more than one source that Legendary is already planning a sequel! If this proves true, we could see another one in just a couple years! Since they already set up the story, a sequal could give us a lot more Godzilla action, and fix some of the problems from this movie.

MemberBaragonMay-18-2014 6:53 PMTalisman-Go read my post again. Where did I say you aren't allowed to express your own opinion? The problem with your point is not your dislike of the movie, but your fuzzy logic. You claim the majority of the audience didn't like the movie. Wrong. So some critics didn't like the "weak" human characters, did that stop them from enjoy the movie. Otherwise, why would there still be 72% positive rating for the movie on rottentomatoes? You should not claim your own dislike of the movie as the majority view, period. Why keep going for forever about how you hate the movie? We get it. Move on. thepike-What Edwards said is what Edwards said. The problem is not what he said, but what you said. You claim that there won't be a sustained box office. We don't know that at this point. And if that was true, then a massive drop-off will mean the movie can't make back its budget. Hence a loss for the studio. Hence no sequel. Don't tell me you can't see the error in your own statement.

MemberBaragonMay-18-2014 9:20 PMwatched it today. great movie.. needed to see more of G. but for a first time effort from a rookie (Gareth).. not bad. This movie was waaayyy better than the 98 disaster. I love the depiction of G being an Alpha predator. Nice touch IMO. I will admit I was wrong about the height and the theory of thewre being 2 G's in this movie. Forgive my over zealousness. I did not care for the muto monsters... but like I said.. not bad at all. I give this movie an 8 out of 10. I look forward to a sequel.

Godzillatheking123-I said I THINK, as in AN OPINION, an in A PREDICTION. Do you have a problem with that? Because if you do, I say you're in the wrong place. I can understand that you may not agree, but you seem to be going on for what reason? There is no problem with what I said, even if I end up being wrong about the box office drop off.

And, frankly, it loooks like I'm already right about what I said about a sequel. So let me say this again...open your ears and listen....They are already planning a sequel based on OPENING WEEKEND. NOT AFTER. NOT A WEEK FROM NOW. NOT A MONTH. They ALREADY turned a profit. There is not an article saying that they are waiting to see how things go. They are doing it now. You must have read the article on THIS SITE. So you keep saying the sequel will be based on sustained office, which unless someone changes their mind, is incorrect. This point cannot be argued, making my original statement true.

Godzillatheking123

MemberBaragonMay-19-2014 8:06 PM

thepike-Legendary said they need 350 million to break even, and alot more to make a sequel worthwhile. So a sequel is based on projection of box office, not merely the opening week.

As for your opinion/prediction, I don't have a problem with it. I do have a problem with your reasoning.

RR44

MemberBaragonMay-19-2014 8:27 PMhold up... 350 million to break even? the budget for this movie was 160 million.. plus 80 million on advertising. In three months they will have doubled that.. IMO.. a sequel is a must. and IF universal pictures gets involved.. then more money will be spent. but I don't think that they will do a sequel.. and then again.. I hope I'm wrong.

Spoilers....

Aside from the already tired complaint that Godzilla was unnecessarily limited in screen time...

Was anyone else at least SLIGHTLY surprised that all, and I mean ALL, of the marketing and imagery and even commentary from the crew, led us to believe that Godzilla would be a city stomping force that also happen to battle MUTO?

I was genuinely surprised to see Godizlla as SO MUCH THE HERO, that he never once, at any point, intentionally harmed anyone besides the MUTO.

Yes he broke through the Golden Gate Bridge, but that seemed more of a retreat as he was being blasted in the face by rockets and missiles.

And yes he also destroyed half of San Fran, but not in the old school vindictive attack format...rather as a consequence of battling the MUTO.

I'm not saying its bad...I kind of enjoyed that, and I'll be happier to let my son see some of the movie when he's ready for it, knowing that Godzilla is a hero and not a villian.

spudster

MemberMothra LarvaeMay-23-2014 5:57 PMThe film was class. I liked the way the production team and advertising team hid what the movie was really about. (I cocooned myself for 18 months without spoilers). Must admit there was too much MUTO and not enough godzilla. Mr Cranston's role was unexpectedly short though for all the media hype??
