Kong: Skull Island has grossed nearly $143 million at the global box office this weekend and only continues to gain momentum. But while the financial updates are reassuring, what's really got us excited is the post-credit scene Warner Brothers and Legendary attached to Kong: Skull Island. This article will detail what this scene meant and what it tells us about the upcoming Godzilla sequel. Of course, this will contain spoilers if you have not yet seen Kong: Skull Island.

Monarch are aware of Mothra, Rodan and Ghidorah

As the post-credit scene indicates, Monarch have discovered cave paintings detailing Godzilla, Mothra, Rodan and Ghidorah. Much like their discovery of Kong on Skull Island, they know of their existence but at the time, they are unaware of their location or relationships to each other.

In Kong: Skull Island, it was revealed that Monarch had a theory concerning massive subterranean capsules which housed these ancient creatures. The bombs they dropped on Skull Island awoke the Skullcrawlers which in turn, forced Kong to intervene. This pre-existing knowledge of subterranean passages and the creatures which reside inside them beg the question of how Monarch plan to trigger and awaken Rodan, Mothra, Godzilla and Ghidorah.

Godzilla sprung into action when the MUTOs got loose (following his original awakening in 1954), triggering an instinctive response. However when Kong and the Skullcrawlers began moving around, Godzilla could not be bothered. We're curious to see what monumental catastrophe needs to take place in order to bring all of these monsters out from hiding.

The Shobijin

The Shobijin, is the name given to the twin fairies which usually accompanied Mothra in her own films and tie-ins with Godzilla. They are essentially priests and guardians for Mothra which somehow offer a telepathic link between the Moth God and those who interact with them.

In the Kong: Skull Island post-credit scene, when the cave painting of Mothra appears, two humanoid figures are visible beneath it, with their hands raised almost as if praising Mothra.

Much like the indigenous tribes of Skull Island, the Shobijin may be portrayed in a similar fashion - as an ancient race of human who worship Mothra as their God. Whether they will possess the same telepathic abilities as the ones in Toho's film has yet to be seen.

Ghidorah and Godzilla history

The cave paintings conclude with a scene of Godzilla and Ghidorah, engaged in battle. Many dead human bodies and skulls litter the ground beneath them.

Godzilla 2 Godzilla vs Ghidorah

This is either a recording of previous events, or a prophecy yet to come to fruition. The latter seems more likely, but the concept of Godzilla and Ghidorah being mortal enemies dates back to Ghidorah's debut. Ghidorah is Godzilla's Kryptonite and the only foe to have ever really given the King of all Monsters a run for his money.

The likelihood of this painting being a historical reminder of the titanic clash between Godzilla and Ghidorah would make for a great lead-up and would help explain the back story behind their rivalry better than a prophecy would. But either route would be welcome.

Ghidorah design

Something else we were treated to with this post-credit scene was a rough look at Ghidorah's actual design. Of course the three-headed Dragon remains the base for Ghidorah, but in the cave painting with Godzilla, we can see that Ghidorah actually has elongated wiskers of sorts, like many traditional Chinese dragon designs.

Godzilla 2 King Ghidorah

Ghidorah also has wings and it almost looks as if Ghidorah is emitting electricity through his mouths against Godzilla, but it's difficult to know for sure.

Directed by Michael Dougherty, Godzilla 2 King of the Monsters will release on March 22nd in 2019 and begins filming in Atlanta this June! Filming is expected to run through to October. Stick with Godzilla-Movies.com if you want the latest news!

The After Credits... These were beautiful... Rodan... Mothra... and King Ghidorah... I walked out the theater... with a hell of a smile.

There is actually no shobijin. That was just because the image was blurry and it looked like there was 2 people. This is the HD image i took at the movie on the 10th.

Is it just me or did the design of Rodan kinda look like his Showa design?

Actually there are up to 4 figures in front of Mothra, but only two have their arms raised! Definitely not just a blurr:

I haven't seen Kong yet, I'm seeing next Saturday. But I can't wait, I'm psyched to this after credit scene. I also would like say that whether the Godzilla and Ghidorah cave painting is a historical fight or a prophecy that it's freaking awesome. I personally believe that Godzilla King of The Monsters will be the best movie in the Monsterverse. It has a great director, great cast, and and all of the great monsters. I'm stoked

@Chris,

You've got "Ghidorah deaign" not design. Lol. :P

Anyway, not to go against anything anyone has said but, from my understanding and point of view, these cave paintings seem to hint that Ghidorah is an earth bound creature. Unless of course he is from space and we just don't know it yet.

But the final photo is enough to show us what looks like a battle already happened or a prophecy about to begin. From what I saw in the theaters, like Chris pointed out already, was Godzilla using the atomic breath and ghidorah using his beam attack.

As for Godzilla king of the monsters, legendary really needs to step up their game for the next one. Kong Skull island is a fun movie, but with hardly character development and a poor script, Kong could have been made a lot better. The best news we have for Godzilla king of the monsters, is the fact that Max Boring-stein will not be involved.

I look forward to seeing what legendary does.

@Huge-Ben

Max-Borensteins not involved with the next one? I thought he was

@Ben, haha thanks! Totally flew past that typo, I fixed it now!

@Godzilla 2014 himself,

From multiple sources around legendary, they all tend to point that Max Borenstein will not be on board for Godzilla king of the monsters.

Which, to me is a good thing. He can't write characters in worth a damn and his story telling is rather boring. Ever watch "Seventh Son"? There's a huge reason it bombed at the box office.

To me Rodan looks a lot like a showa Gyaos.

I was thinking the same thing ^ thought of Gyaos immediately. It was the head shape I think. Could have been exaggerated because of the paint, who knows.

Been floating around here for a while but finally felt inspired to join up properly after reading through the comments on this one.  After watching various reviews and opinion leading up to Kong I was expected what they all claimed which was a universal chorus of "Monster action is great, dialog and acting is TERRIBLE, don't expect much".  My expectations were low, and the opinion on here seems to be much the same.  But I must disagree.  I expected little, and for John C. Reily to just be annoying comic relief, but I found myself really liking the characters, and he was superb in that he actually had an arc and a satisfying story, my wife was literally crying beside me as the credits rolled and I felt fuzzy.  Sam Jack was delightful in his usual bravado, John Goodman was pleasing and made for a great addition to the Monarch mythos, and even though Hiddleston and Larson didn't get the parts they deserved they were still satisfactory.  I think people need to lighten up on the harsh criticism of the writing and acting, and I'm sincere, it was a thoroughly fun and enjoyable movie but I think the human side of the equation is getting too little credit.

You know guys, on Twitter, someone from Legendary, possibly a producer or even Mike Dougherty himself, commented on a crystal formation formed in space. Hint? Maybe!

Also, just saw the movie. I'm a giant monster fan, so I liked it. But HO BOY, when that post-credits scene came up...... I nearly leapt out of my damn seat!
