Denis Villeneuve's Blade Runner 2049 hit theaters a couple years back and although his sequel to Ridley Scott's Blade Runner underperformed at the box office, it resonated positively with most fans and critics.
While discussing 2049 with Empire Magazine, after his film earned itself a spot on Empire's 100 Greatest Movies of The Century list (of which it ranked in at #45), Villeneuve expressed that he would like to return to the world of Blade Runner, but instead of following on with another sequel to Scott's original, he would instead like to pursue new stories set within the same universe:
I think cinema needs original stories. But if you ask me if I’d like to revisit this universe in a different way, I can say yes. It would need to be a project on its own. Something disconnected from both other movies. A detective noir story set in the future… I wake up sometimes in the night dreaming about it.
Whether or not Villeneuve will get his chance to explore his original, futuristic detective noir vision has yet to be seen. Director of the original Blade Runner, Ridley Scott expressed interest and intent to revisit Blade Runner himself back when 2049 hit theaters but nothing came of that yet and we're still waiting on his next Alien movie to enter production...
