I'll be seeing it probably close to 5/6 more times with various groups of friends and family. I want a sequel, so we can finally (and hopefully) get our answers, so I like to think I'm doing my part haha

OvomorphMember23 XPMay-14-2017 2:39 PM

Fantastic news, and yeah a four hour movie next time, Ridley could team up with Guillermo del Toro and Ron Perlman cos Ron must be a bit peeved and they could bring back fish boy, hey yeah, imagine that . . .

Guillermo del Toro

Pretty impressive numbers and it still hasn't opened everywhere yet.

DeaconMember10416 XPMay-14-2017 4:22 PM

Hopefully it does well, because if it totally bombs and then when the dust as settled those Rotten Tomatoes and IMDB etc scores drop and if there is more criticism than praise within  3-6 Months you wander what effect that has on a Sequel.

I do however think FOX have given the Green Light to the Sequel, but there is no Finished Draft and if things dont look good for AC then it could Force another Drastic Change and God Forbid they go a Aliens Sequel route instead to being in $$$ and Rejuvenate interest in the Xenomorph...

And no AC Sequel means a Pretty bad way to leave the Prequels because While Prometheus could have been left Open and not had a Sequel,  Alien Covenant is the First in the Franchise that 100% is left ending that needs a Sequel

BigDave

DeaconMember10416 XPMay-14-2017 4:25 PM

But i think AC should make a Good Return, a interesting thing is some news claims they made the movie for like $110M or so, the Projected Budget was $150M  i really hope its not $110M because on one hand it shows quite a lot was done for that Money but on the other it would explain some unfinished work (CGI) and Scenes.... seems a fair bit of Practical stuff was done but left out, hopefully not as much as The Thing 2011 (due to cuts, as that movie had some interesting Dropped Practical Effects).

BigDave

DeaconMember10416 XPMay-14-2017 4:36 PM

Regarding a 4 Hour Movie LOL

Yeah i think we could have a slow build up and explore more, but simply its about the $$$$ and Fox would not just cater a movie for the Die Hard fans who would sit through 4 hours...

This is the reason a lot of cuts get made, Promethues if we did a Longer Cut with every shot scene that would run in sequence (dont include alternatives, so they either go for the Fifield Hanger scene we got, or alternative never shown with Weyland being escorted as this happens... This one shows its Shaw who runs Fifield Over).

And doing this without the TED Talk, would still given us a extra 25 Minute Movie Approx....  But they cut things out to keep some movies running times down for Theatrical Releases.

Alien Covenant no doubt has a longer cut out there, its a case of will we see a 2hr 15m to 2hr 20m Directors Cut?  (does not include Prologue Scenes).

The other option is to split a movie into 2 parts, but they seem to only do this with well established Box office Smashing Movies.  (LOTR Harry Potter etc).

I can see the point though for wanting a longer movie, in hindsight maybe Covenant should have be done in a way that we see TWO Face Huggers but one gets killed... and Oram instead gets taken to the Ship and Chest Bursts at the end as David looks on.

But this would maybe not please fans who wanted to see Xenomorphs, and would now have to wait for a Sequel to see the Xenomorph Adult so the end would feel like Prometheus one.

The only alternative would have had only One Chest Buster, that gets onto the Ship earlier...  so cut the Oram Chest Buster until he is on the Ship,  and have Neomorphs doing the killing and getting onto the Drop Ship....

Then adding a extra 10-15 minutes to the Final Act where Oram Chest Bursts..  then allow time for the Organism to grow and basically similar to Alien but at a bit faster pace.

How does this compare with Prometheus' opening?

http://www.boxofficemojo.com/news/?id=4292&p=.htm

BigDave

DeaconMember10416 XPMay-15-2017 3:45 PM

so i have done the Maths and the Countries opening Weekends that Gave Alien Covenant a $42M Return is 33% less than how the movie did in the same countries compared to Prometheus at $56M

I think the USA Market Results will be interesting.... but i think it was odd to release this movie so close to Guardians of the Galaxy 2 but then they are TWO totally different movies and one should not have affected the other much.

Prometheus made about $403M Box Office (310% of Production)... so the current trend may point to Alien Covenant thus $270M which would be 243% Return on Alien Covenants $111M Budget.

OvomorphMember3 XPMay-16-2017 4:43 AM

So the interpretation/inference is, according the intial 'math' (hate that word), that AC will be less of a financial success than Prometheus, which has already been torn to bits by many critics on this site.

I marvel at the self-proclaimed ‘experts’ (wingers) on this great site full of their own righteous indignation and self-entitlement, criticising AC within the first week of its release. They scream 'me, me, me, listen to me, I'm the biggest Alien fan, the film should have gone the way I wanted it to’.

Fact - AC is another great Ridley Scott film.

Fact - he’s making the next one, and the next one.

Wow America is still waiting :O . I've not seen ac yet I'm building up the courage to watch it :) . I'm in the UK and yes strange about South Korea seeing so much improvement.  But I think the numbers reflect how poor Prometheus was compared with alien. There will always be a few nutters that can't see how bad it is in some areas (not saying it was all crap). I just hope we get the full story one day about the making.

Even the viral stuff was really muddled and even went unfinished on Prometheus...i think they did less this time... Anyway need to see this one and hope what I've read is not correct :s ...

One of the things I love is the line I kept hearing: it's like bladerunner it will be a classic in a few years time... lol . But still really want it to be a classic :( ... or at least one or two of the series now ...

Alien Covenant, watching in cinema."Germany"
Not good, I had expected more.
Prometheus was more exciting without Xenomorph.
If I had to score points I would give 6 out of 10.
With Prometheus having 8 of 10.

OvomorphMember3 XPMay-17-2017 8:39 PM

Okay... Just saw it. It's not "as bad" as Prometheus, but that doesn't make it a good movie unfortunately. And just like Prometheus, if you've seen the trailer, you've seen the movie.

Don't expect any surprises, you won't get any. Every deaths are shown in the trailers... There's 9 peoples killed on screen, the trailers count 8 of them!

Just as well, every major scenes are already in the trailers, you'll just get few seconds more, nothing else.

I had hope during the firsts 30 minutes, the movie takes its time to install the characters, maybe to much. About James Franco, really hope you've seen the Last supper featurette cause it contains more screening time of him than the actual movie... I'm not joking! Just... WHY? Why hiring him for THAT? Ridley Scott must have lost a bet or something like that, it's the only explanation.

When they land on the planet, well, the extended version of the trailers starts. And it won't stop untill the very VERY previsible last act.

The Neomorph is the only good point of the movie, but once again, you've already seen most of it. He's by far the most impressive creature and the only thing a bit "scary". Unfortunately, as soon as the Xeno get on stage, the Neo is gone definitely.

Get everything you can from the back and mouth bursting of the Neomorph because the regular chest bursting from the Xeno is just RIDICULUS! I laughed... REALLY! What the f*ck Ridley?!? What is that thing coming out? Have you've ever seen a chest bursting??? You should check your brain cause you've obvioulsy lost every memories of the one you designed 40 years ago.

That leads me to the main problem of the movie, the Xenomorph! Somehow, Scott achieved to remove every bit of charisma from the main character of the franchise. Even when he's there and shown in full light, he's inexistant. Not scary, not a menace for the main characters, killed in 2 sec and worst of all, not very well done. The CGI Xeno is totally f*cked. The only good shot of him is the one from... the trailer.

The crew of the Covenant isn't as dumb as the one from Prometheus, but still, they're very VERY stupid. They don't have any form of interogation about the civilization who lived there. They just don't give a f*ck. They're seeing the temples, the idols the thousands of dead body all around. For them it's "just" the first encouter of an alien civilization but, they have other things to think about so let's move on... What?!? Seriously? If David doesn't get by himself into his flash back sequence (and don't expect anything from it either, 3/4 of it was in the latest featurette too), we won't learn more about the engineers. When I say learn more, I'm kind, cause we actually learn nothing new except what happens when the black goo land on their face. Sploiler alert : they just die. And that's all for the engineers, thanks for coming.

When the end title came, the only thing I could think about was : WHY??? Why this movie? What for? What does it add? The Prometheus part was already seen in... Prometheus, and all the Alien parts were already seen in... every other Aliens movie. It doesn't answer anything more, it's just a mashup of both, nothing else. But a mashup who would destroy the best part of both.

The final twist... My god... I hate you so much Ridley... Well, the last big twist, characteristic of every Alien movie, is litterally the most previsible and most poorly written of cinema history. Just that!!!

I was hoping this movie would correct everything wrong in Prometheus but it doesn't. It repeats all the scenario absurdities one by one and commits new ones, while destroying the Xenomorph legend in the process.

My apologizes to Damon Lindelof, he wasn't the one to blame. Ridley Scott just isn't able the write a good story or an inteligent character anymore.

Final words : disapointed and sad. Not as much as I was after seeing Prometheus, but very close.

BigDave

DeaconMember10416 XPMay-17-2017 9:20 PM

"My apologizes to Damon Lindelof,"

That may be the case indeed.... as i see Logan has done just as much a mess with AC.... so do we blame him too.. or do we look at he common theme which is RS and FOX but we need cut RS a bit of Slack... as FOX Ultimately had the final say

As far as Franco goes... Ridley Scott asked him about it, but said its only a Small Role, and Franco was like Hell Yeah i do it... and they did 3 Scene..

1) The Cryo-Pod Scene...

2) The Video he made for Daniels while he was rock climbing.

3) A video of them both in their New York Apartment talking about their future and building a Cabin on a Lake..

This Last Scene was Cut from the movie..

Then RS re-called the cast to do the Prologue Video the Last Supper that was the work of RS Son.

DeaconMember10416 XPMay-17-2017 9:21 PM

We can Gauge the movie better once its been out in the USA... i think come May 30th we can Gauge the Total Box Office to then work out how well the movie will do.

If the movie makes Double its money it would have been considered not a Flop, ideally 300% would be a Success...

But i think it they can make a $150M Box Office Profit then they would consider that job done, however even if they dont (which they will) they have committed to another movie.

If combined these Movies do not make a good enough %%% return then this could effect any more movies being made, or indeed having them handed over to someone else.

Tired of always seeing the same basic scenario: with an exploration team that arrives on a planet to be attacked and killed by xenomorph.

That he make us a film about the engineers without the humans showing us hero and villain engineers, their society, civilization, if there are kings and queen engineers, their mode of mating, their ritual, their technology, Space wars, and their extraterrestrial god never seen before (other than xenomorph).
See the creation of engineers (Adam and Eve) by an alien race ever seen with the origin of the black oil.
(This is what should be done)

But where does the black liquid come from, for even if David invents xenomorph, he has not invented the black liquid. Disappointed with Shaw's destiny. David is the real bad guy.
I thought that the shock wave of the beginning of the film was an attack of an extraterrestrial war, and well no. David pollutes the planets with the xenomorphs.
It is David who amuses himself to create Xenomorph, whereas I thought that had to be the Space jockey who had created the Xeomorphs. But then what will create the Xenomorphs? David (bad) vs. Walter (good) (Cain vs Abel)
I did not understand how it was possible to have an alien in the mother ship at the end, it is David who contaminated it?
Is Walter really dead? We do not know, even if David took that place.
If Walter is not dead he can still try to use space craft Jokey Spit by David?
The origin of the black liquid is still unknown.
Maybe there is another planet of more advanced engineer in the suites?
Deacon, neomorph, xenomorph and after? We want new

Conclusion: in the whole alien saga, the extraterrestrials do not exist, they are experiments hybrid inter animal and human species of human scientist / crazy robot

All I have red here and elsewhere managed only to make my perception and expectations even more blurred. Really can't wait to see the movie (next Wednesday, I think). Like in case of Prometheus - honestly I don't remember when I have invested so much time into analysis of trailers and reviews, trying as much as I can to avoid (at least major) spoilers. Lesson to keep the aim low is for sure valuable, although it's not easy really with all experience with Ridley Scott.

In general it seems to me that all dimensions of financial success (and necessity of success!) are pretty much underestimated in confrontation with the movie by majority of reviewers. The times are definitely much harder nowadays... Even in 2012 with Prometheus all stuff connected with Disney & MCU was still in early days. Now the pressure on and inside of Fox is simply much greater. We must live with those aspects of new reality :-(

Predictable shallow movie, with some references to blade runner in it (just waiting for blade runner to be ruined now). Like others have said, you get to see most of the good bits in the trailers. I will say no more about it, incase it spoils it for others.

I saw the 10:10 RPX showing of Alien: Covenant last night here in Astoria N.Y. and I think it was whack.. I guess I am just too old for horror movies, and tho I knew it was a horror movie going in I was hoping it would be at least good and lean into Scifi and be a more serious movie.. Oh well It was only $45.00 including a soda and popcorn & no big deal. At least we killed a couple of hours.

Again I think Alien would be a more successful movie if it was more of a serious SciFi movie and you'd figure it would be a serious movie with the majority of the posters in here but I don't know.

I wonder how many of the big posters here ran out and saw the movie.

Took the box office this weekend! Good job!

"We can't get through the storm but we can travel through Galaxy's and light years!?!!?? GT?O!!"

David sent a pulse wave to stop the Covenant IMHO...it wasn't a storm but a trap....he sent the distress beacon to bring entice space travelers to his web.
