Love him or loathe him, Tom Cruise has been in some good movies. And when it comes to science fiction he is no slouch with movies like; Minority Report, War of the Worlds, Oblivion (in cinemas this Friday), and next years All You Need Is Kill. Now comes the news that Tom cruise has signed on to star in yet another sci fi action movie called Yukikaze.

How many of you are hearing "Highway to the Dangerzone" in your head right now?

For those of you that aren't anime fans; the Yukikaze movie will be an adaptation of the Japanese novels of the same name written by Chohei Kanbayashi. The novels have already been adapted into five home release anime movies, which have won the Tokyo Anime Award for Original Video Animation in 2003, and again in 2006.

Yukikaze, which translates as "Windblown Snow", is actually the name of a fighter jet used by the novels hero, Rei Fukai, of whom is a member of an interplanetary defence force called the FAF (Fairy Air Force). The FAF's mission is to fight back against an invasion from the an alien race known as the JAM using the wormhole over Antarctica the Aliens created to attack us.

This translates to Top Gun meets Independence Day, most likely featuring aerial dog fights akin to those seen in the latter. More news as and when it occurs.
