Ridley Scott will begin casting for his upcoming film adaptation of the Hugh Howey 'Wool' novels in early 2014, with the hope of having actors lined up for the sci-fi film next year.
A source told the Daily Mirror newspaper: 'Casting starts early next year and people are already saying this movie will be the blockbuster to end all blockbusters in 2015.'
The story of 'Wool' takes place on a post-apocalyptic Earth. Humanity clings to survival in the Silos, subterranean cities extending over one hundred stories beneath the surface. No one is allowed outside until a secret is discovered that could change the course of humanity, as well as reveal its devastating past.
The first instalment of the post-apocalyptic story, which is only 60 pages long, was self-published in July 2011 and priced at under $1. Following the popularity of the short piece, Howey wrote more of the story and the tale has since expanded into a series of books. 'Wool' managed to climb into the US bestseller list, after which Howey sold the film rights to 20th Century Fox.
The author was influenced by Scott's sci-fi films while growing up and claims there are elements of 'Wool' which fit with the director's previous work.
''I'm sure I was influenced growing up on 'Alien' and I'm sure Ripley (the character played by Sigourney Weaver) was in my mind when I wrote the character of Juliette (one of the main character's in 'Wool'). I'm sure the pacing of 'Wool' also harkens back to his older works where you can develop characters and tell the story rather than starting off with explosions.''- Hugh Howey
