For this week's Scified Top 10 Tuesday article, I'll be counting down the top 10 upcoming Sci-Fi Movies which you will not want to miss! Now, this countdown doesn't necessarily lost these films in any particular order, as opposed to some of our previous Top 10 Tuesday features. Be sure to let us know what you think of this list in the comments section below and visit each movie's Scified Movie Page for more plot info, cast info and general news for each of the movies featured below! Alright, let's get started - this week's Top 10 Upcoming Sci-Fi Movies:
Directed by Alfonso Cuarón and written by Alfonso Cuarón and Jonás Cuarón, Gravity has been regarded as "The best space film ever done" by none other than visionary director James Cameron. The film involves Astronauts who attempt to return to Earth after debris crashes into their space shuttle, leaving them drifting alone in orbit. Starring Sandra Bullock and George Clooney as the main leads, Gravity comes crashing into theaters October 4th, 2013! This will be one you won't want to miss this Fall!
Directed by Monsters director, Gareth Edwards and written by Frank Darabont and Max Borenstein this fresh American take on the classic Japanese Monster flick has shown some serious promise with the recently released images, footage and information. For one thing, the beast himself, resembles the classic Godzilla more closely than the last American attempt at the same film. Another is that even though Gareth Edwards is a relatively new Director on Hollywood, his last film Monsters showed us that he knows how to direct a "Monster Movie". Along with a stellar cast including Braking Bad's Bryan Cranston, Kick Ass' Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Elizabeth Olsen making up the main cast, Godzilla (2014) comes stomping into theaters on May 16th, 2014. The official plot for Godzilla (2014) is described as "an epic rebirth to Toho's iconic Godzilla, this spectacular adventure pits the world's most famous monster against malevolent creatures who, bolstered by humanity's scientific arrogance, threaten our very existence."
This film needs little introduction. Interstellar is the next massive cinematic project by renowned filmmaker, Christopher Nolan. Described as an exploration of physicist Kip Thorne's theories of gravity fields, wormholes and several hypotheses that Albert Einstein was never able to prove. The official plot synopsis for Interstellar has yet to be revealed. But the film has already snagged the talent of some high-profile stars including Matthew McConaughey, Anne Hathaway, Jessica Chastain, Michael Caine and Matt Damon! Interstellar is set to hit theaters November 7th, 2014 and will without a doubt be one next year's top science fiction films.
This is probably one of the lesser known upcoming sci-fi action films of the list so far. Edge Of Tomorrow stars Oblivion's Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt as the lead roles. Directed by Doug Liman and written by Chris McQuarrie, Edge Of Tomorrow current plot synopsis involves Tom Cruise as Lt. Col. Bill Cage, an officer who is killed within minutes of a doomed combat mission to take down a hive-like alien race. He wakes up and is forced to relive the day (and the death) because direct physical contact with the alien has thrown him into a time loop, dooming him to live out the same brutal combat over and over, however improving his skills along the way. Look for Edge of Tomorrow in theaters June 6th, 2014.
Another lesser known, upcoming sci-fi success is the next film project by Andy Wachowski and Lana Wachowski, entitled Jupiter Ascending. Though this film isn't necessarily a "hot topic" right now, we do know more ab out it than other films coming out next year. The current plot synopsis is as follows: "Jupiter Jones was born under a night sky, with signs predicting that she was destined for great things. Now grown, Jupiter dreams of the stars but wakes up to the cold reality of a job cleaning toilets and an endless run of bad breaks. Only when Caine, a genetically engineered ex-military hunter, arrives on Earth to track her down does Jupiter begin to glimpse the fate that has been waiting for her all along - her genetic signature marks her as next in line for an extraordinary inheritance that could alter the balance of the cosmos.". Jupiter Scending will star Channing Tatum, Mila Kunis, Sean Bean, Douglas Booth and Eddie Redmayne to name a few. A full cast list can be found here. Jupiter Ascending descends to theaters July 25th, 2014.
#6 -Independence Day 2
Though still in the development stage, Independence Day 2 has fans buzzing. With the confirmed return of Jeff Goldblum and recently hopeful speculation of Will Smith's return, Independence Day 2 sets out to kick start not one sequel, but two - making an ID4 saga! Whether the two sequels will be filmed back-to-back, like the Avatar sequels has yet to be decided upon. Independence Day director Roland Emmerich is set to return to helm the next installment and will more and likely direct the third film as well. Independence Day 2 hits theaters July 3rd, 2015. Early plot information suggests that the Aliens encountered in Independence Day return, after 20 years with an army and plan to eradicate Humanity once and for all.
Formerly known as "Jurassic Park 4", the latest installment in the Jurassic Park franchise will now be known as Jurassic World. The title suggests we won't be seeing a theme park, but a world being over run by Dinosaurs - exciting! No word yet on who will star in the film, but it is being directed by Safety Not Guaranteed director, Colin Trevorrow and will hit theaters June 12th, 2015! Hold on to your butts, because this one is set to be a mega-blockbuster in a summer full of high-profile sci-fi films.
Directed once again by Ridley Scott, Prometheus 2 or "Paradise" (unofficially named) is currently in development, with a writer Jack Paglen on board writing the script. The plot is unknown, but we're meant to assume that it will follow Shaw and David on their journey to Paradise - the Engineer home world. Without any specific release date yet set, we can expect the film to land later in 2015 or mid-2016, assuming the scripting stage continues to progress. There was talk of Rik Barnett being cast in the film - which turned out to be accurate, however it's so early in the developmental stage, information from a month or two ago could change. Either way, this sequel will be one of the most highly anticipated, due to the numerous questions posed in Prometheus.
Directed by George Miller and written by Nick Lathouris, Brendan McCarthy and George Miller, the fourth installment in the Mad Max franchise - Mad Max: Fury Road will feature Tom Hardy as Max, returning to the open road... er wasteland. The official synopsis for the film is as follows: "Mad Max is caught up with a group of people fleeing across the Wasteland in a War Rig driven by the Imperator Furiosa. This movie is an account of the Road War which follows. It is based on the Word Burgers of the History Men and eyewitness accounts of those who survived.". However, no release date has been set, Mad Max: Fury Road is expected to come rolling into theaters sometime in the mid-late 2014 range. Filming is complete, with minor re-shoots taking place this November. It's unknown if Mel Gibson will make a cameo appearance, but we have our suspicions. Either way, Fury Road will not be one you want to miss next year.
Following from where Star Wars Episode VI - Return of the Jedi left off, Star Wars Episode 7 will be directed by J.J Abrams and will likely see the return of Harrison Ford, Mark Hamill and Carrie Fisher. The current plot for the seventh Star Wars film is still unknown and will remain a secret for quite some time, judging by how the Studio is handling the project currently. Regardless, this will probably one of the most highly anticipated and highest grossing films of 2015. It's also reported that Disney plans to make at least 3 - 5 more Star Wars films, one every other year. So, expect the Star Wars fad to return in full force come Summer of 2015.
So there you have it. Scified's current Top 10 list of upcoming Sci-Fi movies you'll want to look out for. Since we had to narrow the list to only 10 choices, we realize we are missing quite a few other interesting, upcoming blockbusters. But what do you think? I believe I will see most on this top-list. I think likely the new "STAR WARS" will be the most interesting to see (then "Gravity"). And of course, "Prometheus 2/Paradise" (almost could go without stating).
