Mothra origin theory

So I think that mothra in the sequel could be whatever was in that caterpillar tank in the 2014 movie because it was in the quarantine zone. When all the janjira  radiation stuff happened and the people evacuated the moth/ butterfly gets mutated. That I think would be a good link to the first movie and it could be introduced by a flashback in opening sequence or something like that. As for the twins, I think a nice nod might be that there are two mothras and those could be referred to as the mothra twins by the military or the main characters. Also their could be people that follow the monsters around and act as if it is their idol. if you have seen Independence Day, something like the people going to the top of the building to see the alien ship.

One major flaw with your theory:

There was no radiation in Janjira. The Male Muto sucked it all up.

Well there was radiation around the janjirga area where the whole radioactive power plant explosion happened that's why it was the quarantine zone. Also joe Brody said the air was clean after like 20 years of letting the radiation wear off.

@ DAIKAIJU_DANIELLE

maybe both mothra and the male muto sucked up the radiation at the same time

I really don't think Mothra should be a mutated caterpillar or moth in the Legendary series. The idea of a cocoon being exposed to radiation and suddenly growing to kaiju size is unrealistic by the standards established in the first film, plus it's disrespectful to Mothra's origins in all of her previous film. The cocoon in the tank with "Mothra" written on it was just an Easter egg, not a hint at Mothra's origin or anything.

It would make more sense for Mothra to be a creature similar to Godzilla and the M.U.T.O.s. A gigantic ancient prehistoric moth who has lived for millions of years. Perhaps she has spent the majority of her life living on an isolated island, where a tribe of humans has taken residence and worshipped Mothra as their deity, since she is a gigantic supernatural-looking creature who is gentle towards them. This would make Mothra's origins fit into the Legendary universe and be consistent with Godzilla's, while also preserving most of her origins from the Toho films and establishing her as a benevolent kaiju/

@King Of The Monsters. Uhh, well I see where your idea makes sense as more realistic and more close to the source material. I don't think mothra would exactly work as a "deity" but staying to the theme that if godzilla mutated (strengthen/tiny bit of growth.) from radiation in the 1954 bomb, couldn't mothra mutate from a cocoon or moth in a radioactive area?

^But there is no evidence that Godzilla mutated/strengthened from the radiation of the 1954 bomb tests. He was literally the same size and there's no physical changes that can be noticed from the glimpses we got of him.

I would also like to see Mothra's deity attributes retained. Perhaps it's not intentional and there's simply a vague legend built around her, but I think it needs to be worked in. Mothra as a mutation doesn't work at all.

^ Exactly. The thing is, Mothra has been one of the only monsters in the Toho films to NOT be a mutation of any kind. Suddenly making her a mutation of some sort in a more grounded universe where Godzilla himself isn't even a mutation makes no sense at all, and completely disregards over 50 years of the character's legacy. To appropriately adapt Mothra to any media, she needs to be some sort of ancient creature, a benevolent creature, and a creature that is seen by some as their deity. She doesn't need to be an actual goddess, but there should at the least be a group of people who believe she is their goddess and worship her. And as a nod to the Shobijin, perhaps two twin women who are members of this tribe act as Mothra's personal priestesses.

atomic breath is atomic breath, not typical dinosaur attack. It was caused by the bomb. Also in toho series, he is a Godzillasaurus before turning into gojira.

^Not entirely true, Most of the godzilla movies are seperated. The first four films are their own stand alone films, they were not made to be connected to each other.

Heisei Godzilla was Godzillasaurus true, but this was a entirly different setup for a whole new godzilla to be made. The first one was supposed to be an already exsisting creature, that's why the islanders at Odo island were already aware of this beast before others did. The legend was there and wham! The legend was true.

^^Also that's where Dr.Yamane's speech came into play at the end of the first Godzilla film, "If we keep on conducting nuclear test, then another Godzilla might appear somewhere in the world again." Which was the setup for Godzilla raids Again in 1955. A new Godzilla with a different origin.

The Legendary Godzilla is not a mutation. He was always 355 feet tall and had atomic breath. The prequel comic shows Godzilla using his atomic breath in prehistoric times, and later in the 1950's prior to the bomb test. Even the official toys for Godzilla 2014 state that his atomic breath is a natural ability he has always had.

So no, Godzilla 2014 was not mutated by the bomb in any way. He already possessed his size and abilities beforehand.

^Exactly. Which means that G14 can relate to G54 in terms of being an already exsisting creature.

@ KING OF THE MONSTERS-Godzilla has actually been absorbing radiation for thousands of years according to the 2014 movie and the Godzilla: Awakening graphic novel prequel, so based on that, I think it's safe to say he, well maybe not "mutated" per se, but grew from the nuclear radiation over that period of time. I could easily be wrong and if anyone wants to correct me on that, then by all means, correct me, but that's what I get from the origin story foretold in G:A and G14.

Anyways, I'll second the prehistoric kaiju found on a remote island theory others have put out, possibly even an uncharted island of some kind to make it all the more interesting. Another idea I tossed around is her existing at the same time as Godzilla and surving the Ghidorah meteor crash. Then one day Joe brings it home as a pet after finding it nesting in webbing inside Janjira plant (which would explain the fish tank), then Monarch eventually loots it from their home and places it inside of an artificial thermonuclear coccoon after their studies showed it survived said radiation from the meteor to conduct tests on it and study her metamorphosis. However, it is during these "tests" that she slowly begins to grow/evolve over the course of many years, and possibly gain some special abilities (like her signature stun spore or antenna rays) of her own from the coccoon's inner radiation in the process.

This would basically make her both a prehistoric kaiju AND a product of radiation like Godzilla.

^ Godzilla absorbed radiation all his life, because it's his food source. Saying that Godzilla 2014 was mutated by radiation is like saying that eating food mutated a human child into an adult. It's his natural food source, not a mutagen or growth hormone.

And again, I don't think the cocoon in the Brody house in Janjira should have any connection to Mothra. It was an Easter egg, a name drop, a shout-out. It was not an indication of Mothra's origin at all.

Mothra should be something that is known to a select group of people and unknown to the rest of the world, who emerges during the events of the second film due to the events going on in the world. As far as I'm concerned, when Mothra is first introduced, she is living on a secluded island somewhere, surrounded by a tribe of islanders who believe her to be their goddess.

I was thinking that mothra would be born by that bomb that went off at the end of the movie, but i know i am wrong.

Guess you could say that a moth was flying around the area of the ocean when the bomb went off and all of that radiation made it much bigger.
